I'm pretty sure he made the background out of the image of Vanille and Lightning (I may be wrong though) and it looks like a lot of clone stamping and smudging.
I used that image in a sig of Lightning.
Not the smudging and cloning.. the actual definitive thing that stands out behind the lettering. Airship or summat? >.<
