Hey, all! I just wanted to start a thread and ask the majority of people who play Final Fantasy, just how they pronounce the names of all the characters. Go ahead and throw any character in--whether they're major or not.

Let me begin with Sorceress Edea, from FFVIII--how do you think her name should be pronounced? I seriously can't decide on what I should stick with...now, either it's (Eh-day-uh), (Eh-dee-uh), (Ee-day-uh), (Ee-dee-uh), or maybe (Ee-duh)--this final one meaning that the second 'e' in her name is silent, making it sound like 'Eeduh'. What do you guys think?

I pronounce them correctly.
I think that is the best way to pronounce them.
It is Tie-dus, not Tee-dus, people who say the latter are wrong.
New FF games have solved this problem by having spoken dialogue. However they have combatted this by giving their characters very stupid names.

I agree. Tie-dus is the way to go. And it makes more sense. Tee-dus just makes it stupid. Also I pronounce Zidane as Zie-dane, not Zih-don as it is pronounced in Dissidia for some stupid reason.

I started saying "Tee-dus" but then my brother told me it was "Tie-dus" and so I stuck with that.

"Ee-dee-a"

Also, apparently Quistis is "Key-istis" but I just say it how it is spelled.

Key-istis? 8( I'm sticking with Qui-stis :hmmm: And Ir-vine, some people may pronounce it Ir-vin.

Yeah...

I was really upset when I first heard them say 'Tidus' in Dissidia...I have always pronounced it as 'Tie-dus'.

As for Irvine, I've never heard of anyone thinking that his name is pronounced as 'Ervin'. I've always thought of it as 'Er-veen'

I always thought of Quistis as 'Qui-stis', but now, I say 'Key-stis', lol

And as for Edea, yeah, I'm gonna go with that first one.

Also, what does everyone think about Seifer's name? I always thought of it as 'Sai-fur', but a lot of people think it's 'Say-fur'--what do you all think? I'm sticking with 'Sai-fur', because 'Say-fur' sounds lame...

Oh, and before I forget, what about Laguna's last name--Loire? My assumption is that it's like the word 'Noire' - as in 'No-are', so is Loire like, 'Lo-are'? Please help me with this, lol.

Seifer is how you said it the first time, and is how it's said in Kingdom Hearts II, so that one's cleared up.

His last name I say Lo-are like Noire.

Tidus - Yeah I actually called Tidus (Tee-dus) until I saw a ton of videos and everyone called him (Tie-dus). Edea - I always thought it was (Eh-dee-a) pretty sure Im right. I still cant pronounce her name right I have no idea I think its (Quote-is--trape)??? I still think its (Melly-dole teen-gal) (wee-graf) amd (gaf--gair--e--on) those are the only names everything else is easy xD

I pronounce them as they appear in the original japanese text (as that is how I played them). There is not much that can change pronunciation wise, you either get it right or wrong in most cases. And yes, the english names do change as they are translated, hence why I use the originals. Works best for me.

So, what are their original names? I always figured that they would be different...

Only a select few people ever pronounce tidus tie-dus.

It's basically a given fact that Tidus=TEE-DUS. Despite Selphies screw up in KH2 everywhere else it's TEE-DUS.

therefore it's TEE-DUSS. :monster:

You can pronounce it anway to want though.

Erm, well the ones you guys are discussing are..
FFX - Tida (pronounced like..erm.. Ticket-Dance
FFVIII - Idea (pronounced like In-Deck-Achoo!!

I hope that makes sense. I never realised how hard it is to come up with english words for japanese sounds.

It was never actually pronounced anywhere until the first Kingdom Hearts. And Teedus is stupid and wrong. His name derives from "tide," not "tee shirt."

Haha, for real! I've actually met someone before named 'TIE-DUS' and he spelled his name exactly like Tidus from FFX. And this was how his mother named him. People that I know, know people with the name Tidus, and some are spelled like Titus, and others are spelled like Tidus--both are pronounced as TIE-DUS, so I'm sticking with that pronunciation...

Terra [ˈtɛrra (Ter-rah)]
Edgar [Ehd-gerr]
Sabin [Sab-en]
Celes [Cell-es]
Locke [Locke]

Cloud [Cloud]
Tifa [Tee-fa]
Aerith [ær-eth (air-eth)]

Tidus [Tye-dus]

There is no way "Tidus" is said "TEE-DUS" No way.

I always said Sabin's name as Sab-een :P But it would probably have been spelt Sabine if that were the case. Oh well :gasp:

That's how I saw it too, I just stupidly put /b/ after the first piece instead of with the previous piece. :gasp: Fixed it.

TEE-DUS is so feminine. :wtf:

TIE-DUS at least would have a masculine and manly inflection to it.

I don't care what Square Enix says. He will always be TIE-DUS. Emasculating male character names doesn't fly with me. :mandi:

My Idea:

FF III:
Ingus is I-ngus, not Ing-gus

FF IV:
Yang is pronounced as Young
Rosa is pronounced as Ro-zah

FF VI:
Locke is pronounced as lock, not with a long "o"

FF VII:
Tifa is pronounced as Tee-fa, not Tif-a

FF VII:
Edea is E-dea
Irvine is Ir-vine

FF IX:
It's Zi-dane, not Zi-don

FF X:
I first thought Tie-dus, but a friend told me it's Tee-dus, so I'm stuck to Tee-dus.

Really Quistis is said 'Key-stis', I never knew that, I always said her name 'Qwi-stis' it made sense to me at the time but I guess its said 'key-stis' makes sense too.
Another one I didn't know would probably be; Quina same problem as Quistis I guess xD
