Well I've recently quit smoking.. well very recently this is day 2 smoke free.. longest I've been is like 8 days and got stressed out over something and started again! Ive been smoking for 5-6 years now usually about 3 a day which isnt alot compared to most smokers but Im finding it very hard I keep putting my coat on to go to the shops to buy cigs, then taking it off, putting it back on etc etc. Any tips.. I dont think chewing gum or drinking coffee will fill the void of that beautiful smoke.

I smoked for two years and quit, been clean over 2 years now.

First thing I recommend don't quit cold turkey, it almost never works for more than a week if you quit cold turkey. cut back first till you feel that you really don't need smoking to relieve stress.

Secondly find something else to relieve the stress, yes people do use gum or coffee, but if that doesn't work, try having something to chew on or to relieve the smoking tension.

thirdly find a hobby, as funny as this may sound, hobbies really do help with not smoking, if that is reading, or playing video games, or running, or biking, whatever it is make sure to do it as often as you can, cause it really does help to focus on something more than just the next smoke.

I've never smoked so you will probably take my suggestions with a pinch of salt but you could try patches?

Also I have heard that with each quit attempt you usually last longer than the previous so maybe if you keep attempting you'll eventually quit for good. It's going to be a long and horrible process but if you've got the will power to keep trying then you'll probably manage to get off them for good! :)

Good luck!

My mom did it by throwing a pack in the toilet.. Didn't smoke for 20 years after that. Recently started back, but now I'm encouraging her to stop again.

While I have never smoked (come on y'all.... You know the deal here), my uncle stopped about a year ago after a good 15 years worth of smoking.

He had alot of motivation though. The biggest one being that he wants to be alive for his daughter. He just got up one day and decided he wanted to stop.... and he did. He had a much easier time with it than anybody thought he would. Like Shace said, he also had plenty of stuff to keep him distracted. Christmas was right around the corner, so he had that to worry about. He also had his job (I'm actually not sure what it is... I'm starting to think he works for NASA).

So basically, I'd think the best thing to do is keep yourself distracted, that way you won't think about it as much. You'll be focused on your other activity.

the best way to do it is just go cold turkey, i found it easier having a few in my house, so i knew that they were there if i needed them, because if they werent there, i seemed to want them more lol

the first two weeks are the hardest. You have to want to do it though, there's no point doing it just becasue someone is badgering you

Oh actually, I tell a slight lie, the last time i quit, i was actually ill over new year from over indulging, had a bad hangover plus just generally ill and it took me about two weeks to recover, and by that time i thought, well, ive not smoked for two weeks whats the point in carrying on

the time before having them in the house helped though

Ive fallen off the wagon quite afew times as you can tell lol

i have been smoking for longer than i would care to think about, and i smoke like 40 cigarettes a day (i know, lungs are black)

but i have had a couple of quite attempts and come close to never going back a couple of times throughout the years.

it's mainly about will power, some little tricks i found, keeping your mind occupied like has already been said, I tend to smoke more when im bored, kinda irritating but hey, gives the mind something to do. keep your hands occupied, if you start feeling like you need a fag, play with a pen, fiddle with something, eating also helps as it gives both your hands and mouth something to do other than suck on and hold a cig. i found the strong taste of fresh orange juice quite useful aswell, when i needed a cig i would get a glass of that and the strong taste of citrus took my mind off of the urge to smoke. Also try to harbour a stress free environment, the less external stress factors the better as when you start getting agitated when the withdraw kicks in your gonna be urked enough.

The first two weeks/month is the hardest, but once you've done that, it will get easier.
I've now quit for four months and I'm not gonna lie, it was very very hard. Keeping yourself busy helps if you're a 'bored' smoker, doing stuff with your hands also may help distract you.
I also found brushing my teeth when I wanted one helped. No idea why. :) Good luck!

I work in a shop and we recently began to sell those electronic cigarettes that give you nicotine and let you exhale vapour. Simulating a cigarette without the horrible side-effects. A reasonable number of customers have found them quite good for helping them quit smoking, look into those perhaps.
