Is TV too gay?" Thus is the question posed by Houston FOX affiliate KRIV-26 in a provocative interview which has GLAAD — and Glee fans — up in arms. FOX's hit show Glee tackles some tough issues — from bullying to sexuality and beyond — which has helped to make it one of the most talked-about shows in recent history. So why would an affiliate for the same network air a news story asking if the teen-centric show delves too much into homosexual relationships?
The episode that sparked the 5-plus minute segment was inspired by Lady Gaga's single "Born This Way," and features a theme of self-acceptance and celebrating diversity. Sounds terrible, right?

Well this is exactly the type of storyline that Gleeks live for, and the episode did not disappoint. With the return of openly gay fan-favorite Kurt Hummel (played by Chris Colfer) and Santana Lopez (played by Naya Riveria) taking one step closer to revealing that she is a lesbian, this episode may have been a little more homo-centric than most, but the overall message remains the same: Acceptance.
Following the broadcast, Houston Fox affiliate KRIV-26 seemed to shoot themselves in the foot when they aired a provocative segment on gay teens in television, inappropriately — yet not surprisingly — titled, "Is TV Too Gay?"

The segment featured two incredibly outspoken members of both sides of the debate: Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association and Ray Hill, a gay rights activist. Led by the anchor, Damali Keith, Fischer went on a vicious rant about everything the show stands for:
"What these television programs are doing are glamorizing homosexual behavior... which carries enormous psychological and physical risks to those who engage in it. It's just not a lifestyle. It's not behavior that ought to be glamorized or presented in a way that makes it 'idealistic.'"
When it was Hill's turn, he responded by pointing out that it is, indeed, 2011, and the recent advancements in gay rights show that acceptance is not only desired, but on the cusp for America:
"I don't really understand why this conversation is even being held. We have gone through Lawrence v. Texas and the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell... It's time people start being honest about their sexuality. We're here, we're queer, you may as well get used to it."
But of course, the circus didn't stop there. Keith then prods the interviewees: "We all know about product placement. You throw a soda in a movie and within a few seconds later everyone in the theater is thirsty for that particular brand. Ray, what do you have to say to the people who say that this is propaganda, these aren't just storylines but people who have an agenda?"

We think she's asking if watching Glee will make you gay. And while we're pretty sure that isn't possible, the question only prompted more ridiculous pandering regarding whether a 7 p.m. time slot is "too early" for this type of television content. Are singing teenagers and messages of acceptance only appropriate after 11 p.m.?
GLAAD (The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) requested a formal apology from FOX on Tuesday for framing the segment as a vicious part of the gay vs. anti-gay debate, rather than find experts who are qualified to speak on the topic. However, FOX has not issued an apology, instead stating that it stands by its content. But really, is anyone surprised?

I hate Glee but this made me laugh my ass off almost as much as the Lady Gaygay lady. I don't know about you, but I think that saying a TV show can turn you gay is pretty stupid. Of course, it is Fox so...you know it's sort of expected. Didn't they support Sarah Palin? :wacky:

Oh no gay people are on a TV show Fox, what's next? Is American Idol propaganda for suck ass music?

That's ridiculous and stupid. The discussion is lame and pointless. It shouldn't even be taken seriously... :ffs:

I hate Glee and I know this is stupid. :hmph:

I agree but I just had to share when I read it.

I hate Glee as well. But to suggest it's gay propaganda? I mean come on. But even though we think it's stupid, this was actually on the news Cali. This is even worse then the Girl and Gaga because that was her acting on her own.

True. But I wouldn't know... nor do I care if it is or isn't. If they are "brainwashing" who gives a hoot. But if it isn't and people are saying it is... well again, who the f cares. :wacky:

I mean, that's like saying those Teen mom shows convince teens to go out and have babies when that's not it. They're getting preggers cuz they can't keep their legs closed or keep it in their pants.

I see no difference in this subject. Of course the show isn't going to make everyone who watches all of a sudden gay or want to be gay so the discussion is just... pointless in my opinion.

You're born with a gay sexuality... a show can't convince you that you're gay.

This amuses me. I too share a disgust for Glee. But the idea that this turning people into homosexuals is kind of absurd. But, say someone was in closet and this was there way of getting out. Then kudos to them. But to take a TV show and cut it down to its viewing warps your sexual orientation is just hate from those that don't like it. Take the show "Spartacus" for example. That is nothing but blood, titties and cock throughout the whole series. Does anyone else attack it for making people gay? No. But then again, it is not a Network TV show. But I think you can get my point.

As far as Glee goes, it's all over my Tumblr dash. That's the only thing I know about it. Klaine, some girlxgirl couple, and Finn/Rachel. (I have no idea which is canon, asides from Klaine, so don't ask me. As I said, it's only because it's all over my tumblr dash at times)

I'm only going to say yes to this question if another homosexual couple comes up because it'll most likely be due to the success of Klaine that they put it in there. It's not wrong to be homosexual, or anything. I mean I ~love~ my yaoi, but there's a difference between making couples (gay or straight) because it actually fits in the plotline or to please the fanbase. I would rather it be the former,

Is it too gay right now? No, not as far as I'm aware, I'm just sick of seeing so much Klaine and people freaking out about it. That's all.

So no.

This article is crap. D:

Yup, it will definitely make you gay.

Just like how watching shows with black people in it will make you black. And how shows with asian people in it will make you asian.

Ignorance in this world continues to amaze me.

Well I dont watch Glee in the first place so it really doesnt matter to me, but I was thinking about seeing the movie when it comes out, now I know not to go waste my money or even think about seeing a show that I thought was stupid anyway.

It may be gay but they do some good covers, and if it makes me gay to watch it then so be it, people must be shallow to care so much about a tv show being gay, what defines a tv show to categorize it as gay?

Glee is the bomb as well as High School Musical I watch that every weekend, If I didn't have Zac Effron in my life I don't know what I would do.

Man I hate GLEE. Fucking worst show in history along with the beiber movie.

Well with that being said guess I wont be watching glee and beiber is a wasted production dont waste your money watching it trust me. The only thing i saw from glee was the theme song and it reminded me of high school musical and could never get into that lol thats why i skipped glee.

Glee is one of those TV shows which is a super guilty pleasure. Anyone who actually comments on the brilliant producing, character development and intriguing storyline should really take a step back and watch some real shows.

But as I said, I still watch it, guilty pleasure :tehe:

Well I'm gonna start off by saying I love Glee. :mokken: (Irrelevant to the rest of my point :lew:)

Now I'm gonna have to partially agree actually. If you watch Glee, you delve into the life of Kurt Hummel.

Everybody loves Kurt. Everyone who watches the series loves him.

My friend's little sister (I think she's 12) came bursting out of her room after watching Glee and she proudly said "I'm a Lesbian".

After a few weeks of talking and what not she came to the conclusion that no, she wasn't a lesbian. But she loved Santana so much, and seeing all the "It's okay to be gay, come out" and stuff like that, she began to question if she was Lesbian. Being a naive 12 year old (well, I was just there a few years ago :wacky:) she seriously thought she was gay, just because she admired Santana.

So, for all of you forum members, this story is of course ridiculous to older more mature people who actually can think. But the thing is, many young people watch Glee. And younger kids especially are really influenced by the media.

I can understand where the article is coming from. Glee is monstrously popular, and one of their main themes is Gay Rights. If you are obsessed with a tv show that tells you to find your sexuality, and be open about it, you will no doubt question it, and maybe even believe that you are!

Man I hate GLEE. Fucking worst show in history along with the beiber movie.

It isn't whether you hate it not, I hate it and think it ruins the songs it uses, it's about the fact that people actually think it's gay propaganda that bothers me. I mean....really? Could you get any more stereotypical?

And Star, you're friend's little sister could easily come out of any number of things believing she's something she's not. It's not about the gay issue, it's about parents making sure that they discuss what their children is taking in with THAT child. I mean she could see a movie that glorifies anything and want to be it, it's all about the parent making sure they understand that just because it's on TV doesn't make it real. Not that your friend's parents are bad, but in general that seems to be what happens.

I am not gay because I was around homosexual people my whole life (I was pretty much) but because I am attracted to men. That is what parents should make sure their children understand. It's not popular, it's who you are.
