examples: Garland, Golbez, Exdeath, Kain. . .
But the reason I'm bringing characters like these up is because directors never really revealed to us what they look like underneath all of that armor (well, Kain took his helmet off around the end of FFIV and I think we only see his face once during the sequel). Is there a person controlling the motions or is it a spirit? We all had to be curious at some point. Some of the armors are rather large in size so I also wonder if the person is also largely built in mass. I'm not sure. Or maybe if you yourself were to draw them out without the armor, how would you make them look? Curiosity. . .

I always wondered this myself too.
Especially Vivi, it's hard to say by the way he's addressed in the game, before the Black Mages attack people just treat him like a young human boy, even though he was the first Black Mage built.
Kain was another one but i ended up getting a pretty good idea.

I have no idea how i would make them look, i guess most of them are bad guys so they would be ugly as shit, but Vivi i just really can't imagine taking his floppy little hat off, and quite frankly i don't want to know, he's perfect as he is.

Well I've always wondered what Kain looks like, and actually I just found some sketches on his Wikipedia page that give a rough idea; however, despite my long-term frustration with it, I actually think it's kind of cool that he was covered up by armor throughout FFIV. He went through so many betrayal issues that it was kind of like, he was hiding within a shell, and you could never really get a clear image of his heart, so the physical manifestation of that within his armor was interesting. And then when he let his hair loose in the wind at the end, it was full of epic symbolism :D

As far as someone like Golbez, whose face I'm pretty sure you never see at all, I am rather curious as to what he would look like underneath. Such obscurity does make me wonder whether it's a Darth Vader situation; where if you were to take off Golbez's helmet, he'd have tons of scars or some sort of disfigurement underneath :hmmm: While it is kind of cool to leave it up to the imagination, it would also be interesting to know how much he looks like (or doesn't look like)
Cecil
.

^I agree, I do think Golbez would look somewhat like
Cecil
, but there definitely will be differences.

Also when Cecil was first wearing armor I imagined him to look differently to when I saw him in his paladin form. The thing is, when someone is covered in armor fully, maybe it's for the best to keep them that way forever, so that people's initial idea of their image doesn't get ruined, if you see what I mean. If someone uncovered Golbez or ExDeath now and they didn't look like I expected them to, I might get a bit disappointed.

Your answer for faces would lie in Dissidia Duodecim's website for Kain, my friend. I have to admit, the first time I saw him without his helmet was quite terrifying. I thought he was supposed to be Cecil's age...?

As for Golbez, look for him in FF4: After Years. I love his sprite.

Now that I read all of the replies, I do kind of wonder now if Golbez's appearance is in anyway related to his
relationship with Cecil. Since they're blood relatives, it would be no surprise if we could recognize any hereditary resemblances on them both
. As for Kain, I have to keep looking for his face on the Dissidia Duodecim pages (have not found him yet), but I read that he is 21, so I can only hope he looks around that age. I'd be guessing that his revealed face would be a part of his alternative outfit in the game.
And I actually wondered the same thing about the black mages. Its like there's a solid body within the outfits, but it looks like a shadow controlling the movements as well. I'm not sure if the sight would be pretty or not if you were to expose one such as Vivi in the sun and take off his signature hat, but it seems the black mages appearances will remain a mystery. (edit: Strike first sentance. I just found it. He looks so OLD.)
I can imagine Exdeath's appearance being somewhat. . . unproportional. Because from what I can remember from images, his helmet is very small, but the armor below the head is unusually massive. So I'd assume its someone inhumane about him or if he's just hugely built.

This is a very interesting topic. :hmmm: I can honestly say that I have never even gave it a second thought when playing with or fighting against characters that are fully equipped with armor as to what is underneath all that armor. While with some characters I do agree that it would probably be somewhere along the lines that they aren't the typical looking FF character (heavily scarred or disfigured face). I will have to say that I think that most of the characters are just plain looking under there, and like Gamingway said it may be that because they use the armor as a sort of shell to hide from the world.

I actually like the fact that you can't see what they look like underneath the armor. I mean, I really didn't like Cecil too much when I saw what he actually looked like from Dark Knight to Paladin. But I like the mystery behind the mask or the helmet. It lets me make my own image of what I think they look like, or what I'd like them to look like

Kain and Golbez's faces have been revealed by spin-offs, so I'll not comment on those two as my imagination will be tainted by what I have briefly seen in screenshots and other things.

With Garland, he was meant to be a knight who had fallen from grace (as far as I can recall). I can imagine that he'd look like a rough, well-built knight, but perhaps with a relatively rugged look... Wait, no... This is Final Fantasy. :dead: Garland would likely have long purple hair with dead flowers on his head. Either that, or he'd look a bit like Steiner; rough and well-built (or whatever), but with eye-shadow of sorts to make him slightly androgynous or strange.

Now Ex-Death... Ever since learning that he was a
tree possessed by an evil spirit
I can't help imagining him as a
walking tree-like being underneath that armour
. I know there really isn't nothing to state that he retains
a wooden form
while underneath his armour, but I think that it is a cool idea.

Here is a doodle I just drew of what I think Ex-Death might look like underneath. Do not click if you want to avoid the spoilers:

As for black mages... Black mages originally were probably just guys underneath. They had black faces because their hats were huge, and it was a cool finishing touch for the sprites to have their faces engulfed in the shadows of their hats.

When FFIX came out I think that they became shadow people underneath those clothes. When Black Waltz No. 3
killed the black mages on the cargo ship
, their hats fell off and the shadows just seemed to disappear to reveal no bodies in them. At least that is how it looked to me. The black mages of FFIX, to me, were shadows in clothes.

Armor is suitable for FF characters because generally (but not always) FF male characters are doormats, and the armor would just make them look much cooler.

Could you imagine if Tidus wore armor? He would be cool whenever he wasn't speaking or laughing.

Haha, that's a funny drawing there, Argor. It'd be hard to take ExDeath seriously if he actually looked like that. So if he does, perhaps it's best that he wears his menacing armor.
