Nope.
The only thing that has to do with defense is the Sentinel Role, which you get later on.
The only type of defense is Healing your party lol.

nope noo option for that... only thing u have at that point are potions 
no defense i am destroyed... i love defend x3 *throw FF13 CD out*
The Sentinel role is your only case of survival really. That is if you are going by defense. If not, then medics help a lot and so do synergists. These are your "defenses" in FF XIII

The sentinel paradigm is your role used for specifically boosting your defense,guarding and drawing all the enemy attention and their attacks focusing only on the person who is using the sentinel role. Once you get your sentinel role built up you will find its more useful, it has very good guard healing,guard damage reduction,guard evasion and guard counter attacks.
The game is progressing more in the future and based on the advancement of FF games they tried something new instead using the old defend command and they give us more options to do while guarding, nothing bad about that if you ask me.
