FFXIII-2 Discussion Thread

Are Serah and Noel going to be the only two playable characters? (minus the fiends) I hope not, I like big casts :/

Also I really hope Serah gets tougher / more interesting by XIII-2, she was the most boring character in XIII (and that is a pretty big achievement) so I'm not too excited about her leading the sequel.
 
The thing that's already pissing me off is how there aren't any signs or hints of the other characters even coming back. I will quit if Sazh and Dajh don't make a comeback. And Snow? Where the fuck is he? Isn't he supposed to be Serahs husband or some shit?

there has been reports that snow will return in FFXIII-2 as well as vallne... but nothing of sazh yet..... they may be saving them for TGS.. don't forget the game not even out until september :)

This game better not be as lame as I'm expecting it to be.

I'm one of the ones who actually loved FFXIII. I mean, it wasn't as fun as it could have been, and I'm kinda pissed that they wasted so much time making it beautiful when you couldn't even revisit the previous locations, but I thought the story was fantastic.

If they're going to make a sequel only to make it about fuckin Serah and some dumbass kid who looks like he belongs in Kingdom Hearts then count me the fuck out

Maybe he went back in time to make sure that happened.

Q&A: The Real Story Behind Final Fantasy XIII-2

If there is a game that was as eagerly anticipated and then as roundly criticized as Final Fantasy XIII, it's hard to call it to mind. The game took years to develop in what was, the team has admitted, an extremely troubled process -- both design ideas and technological hiccups resulted in a game that was far from what it could have or should have been.

It's surprising that producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama -- the same pair behind the original game -- are as contrite as they are about it, simply because it's unusual for Square Enix to take such an attitude publicly.

It is clear, however, that the pair want to win back the series' fans, Moreover, it's also clear they're making an effort to address the game's issues not only with words but with actions, in the form of Final Fantasy XIII-2, a direct sequel to the original, which is set to ship in January 2012 in North America.

In the following interview, the two discuss how they have tried to satisfy the complaints of FFXIII players, and answer rumors that have persisted since the release of the original game.

When you gave your GDC presentation about XIII, around when the game came out, you showed a lot of metrics from focus testing. The biggest question in my mind is: how much of that feedback went into XIII-2?

Motomu Toriyama: We actually set out with a concept for XIII-2. Our ultimate goal is rectifying every single point in Final Fantasy XIII that has been criticized by the users. The main criticisms, I suppose, were: one, it was too story-driven and therefore was quite linear, and, two, that there weren't that many towns and cities to explore, and also that there was no matching interaction between the player and the gameplay.

We actually took those criticisms very seriously, and you'll notice that we tackled them completely and thoroughly. This new game is more player-driven, as opposed to story-driven, so that you can explore different locations and fields to get information and explore towns and other types of locations, as well. So we are very determined to rectify all of the problems, and we think we have.

Even if some elements carry over, Final Fantasy typically introduces new gameplay design for each game in the series. That's good because it things keep evolving, but it doesn't give you a chance to refine stuff before moving on, generally. Does this game give you more of a chance to actually refine the ideas that you introduced with XIII?

Yoshinori Kitase: As you know, XIII introduced a completely new battle system. Because it was so new, we wanted to give each player time to get used to it, and to get the hang of it. Before, with XIII, we just wanted the stages to be quite long, where you have to go quite carefully and slowly and which would look like very lengthy tutorials, which a lot of people didn't like at all.

Because this is the sequel to XIII, we took the basic concept of the Paradigm Shift, for example. The basic idea is the same; but we actually refined it and added new elements to it to make it even better.

So, as you said, the refining process is something we've enjoyed this time around. This time we didn't have to make the game from scratch, so we just have to pursue more product quality and add some extra depth to the game. We feel that we have achieved a very high-quality game.

I remember an interview came out around the time the game was released in Japan saying that there was a volume of content created for the original XIIIthat was more than could be used in the game. Was that the genesis of where this project came from? Did you end up using any of the content as you moved forward?

YK: I think this idea was derived from one comment made by one of our staff, and I think it has been quite widely misunderstood or misinterpreted. It is true in any game, in the process of making it, that obviously you have to come up with lots of different ideas, and obviously you can't materialize every single one of them. You have to try them out, and eventually you're left with the best ones for use. It's only that because there are lots of ideas and content that we could have included in XIIIwhere we didn't; but we didn't actually recycle any of them for XIII-2. It's certainly not that XIII-2 came from the idea of how to make any use of the rejects; that's not how it happened.

XIII-2consists of two parts. One part is the elements and parts that we created from scratch, and the other part is that we took the basic materials from XIII, like the characters, universe, and locations; but every single aspect has been revised or has had new some elements added into it. For example, characters are now presenting completely different, with new costumes, and when it comes to the field map, we now put the element of seasons into it. So it's either completely brand new or the elements from XIII but all differently revised or reworked.

One thing you talked about in your GDC presentation that I thought was interesting is that, in the past of the series, a lot of people could offer ideas into Final Fantasy and they could be incorporated.

But, as development got more complex, that couldn't happen as much. Is that something that you've been trying to move back towards? I know it led to a lot of the interesting concepts -- things that people remember very much about the series. I talked to Tokita-san as well, and he had a similar opinion that it would be great if you could incorporate more of the staff's ideas in a collaborative development style.

MT: It's not just as simple as making a game in an old-fashioned way; it's more than that. But what we did do with XIII-2 is that we completely separated the concept phase and actual development phase, and all sorts of ideas that we discussed during the first phase have been taken into XIII-2. One of the criticisms that we received for XIII was that there weren't enough mini-games, for example, so we implemented more mini-games. One of the concepts behind Final Fantasy, and one of the priorities behind XIII-2 is that it's a bit of a melting pot; you can enjoy all sorts of different types of gameplay in one game. That kind of concept is back in action with XIII-2

One of the things that I found really, really interesting is that, in the Game Developer magazine postmortem for XIII, there's a sense that, until the demo with the Japanese Advent Children Blu-ray was released, there was no vertical slice of the game -- no way to get the team to understand what they were making. From a production standpoint, how have you addressed that, moving forward?

MT: At the beginning of development, we set out to, as we said before, look at all of the problems and criticisms we received about the gameplay of XIII. Also, as the development process of XIII was criticized, we wanted to tackle that issue, as well. So we did introduce a vertical slice; the playable version you've just seen at E3 was the first vertical slice version that we've created, so that vertical slice issue has been tackled.

So you're changing the way the team's process works as well? Addressing audience complaints is one side of it, but the other side of it is actually changing the process of the development team to be more effective.

MT: Yes, we have changed a lot of things in terms of the process, and details will be disclosed at GDC next year, maybe. (laughs)

I didn't feel like posting this in the news section because there's pretty much close to no new information in this one. e.g. mini games, changing weather, towns, exploration, etc. It's just mostly old information rephrased.

I am posting this because of one particular interesting bit.When they are asked about content recycling from FFXIII, they responded:

I don't know whether I should trust this fully, but it seems to be very good news. Some people keep labeling the game as leftovers from the previous game. i.e. recycled unused maps, character models (Noel = male Fang speculation), etc.







Anyway, since I am here, I want to voice out something. Note that the following examples are generalised, and I am not referring to any particular posters in the internet.

I have seen countless comments everywhere in the internet about people who are not going to buy the game because they didn't finish/hated the original FFXIII. It's not that I disagree with such responses. it's kind of normal. First impression matters a lot. It's like hating a food because the first time you eat it, it happens to be a rotten one.

What I am saying, This game is destined to be hated even when it has not been released. The fact that is has 'Final Fantasy XIII' in the title means that it's not going to be received well by the majority, most likely. People are blinded by hatred. I have seen people complaining about the most ridiculous things on FFXIII-2. They complain about the moogle, the music, return of random encounters, etc. They assume too many things: ONLY 2 playable characters, more corridors, etc.

Some people bash Noel based on like a few minutes footage of him. Some others bash Serah for being weak in terms of physique and character. but I find it weird to decide against playing a game just because you don't like the main character. Did you decide against playing FFI-III because the characters have close to no personality? Did you decide against playing FFXII because of what you hear about Vaan?

And please. Did you instantly like Cloud, Squall, Zidane and Tidus the first time you play their respective games? Some people in various forums/video seems to assume that Serah and/or Noel WILL have monotonous character development throughout the game. It's very likely Serah will grow stronger physically and mentally. Don't you think that if they make the original characters return, the game will be very boring in terms of character development? yes they have the potential to grow even further. But many of us already like them by the end of the game, that it may be dull to see them develop more than that. Some characters' stories are pretty much done in my opinion.

I also see many people who decide against buying the game because the old cast will not return (yeah right. It's like they have even confirmed they will not...). Can we for once, take this as a completely new title with the same world? What's wrong with different characters? Are you not excited about getting to relate and like NEW characters? Isn't it fun to see how their character develop?

that's my opinion anyway. I am sure others don't feel the same way. I just feel the need to tell you how I think about the early opinions of others on this game. But as we all know, it's a sequel to FFXIII. Nothing I say will change the mind of others.

I agree with those who say FFXIII was deficient in certain aspects. The criticisms were entirely valid imo.

However it's premature for people to say XIII-2 is going to be terrible or they're boycotting it because they didn't like XIII-2 or X-2 or whatever.

I'm willing to give the game a chance.

We can't assume the other characters won't be joining the party later on for example.We can't make negative assumptions about the game when we have seen so little of it.I expect we'll see more at the Tokyo game show and more questions will be answered.

Of course it seems to me as though some of the problems with FFXIII stemmed from a lack of familiarity with developing games for the PS3 and as Sony has been working with the developers we can expect to see more progress on game developement.
I expect XIII-2 to be a more well rounded and developed game for that reason.

How did they turn back to human from being Crystal? Was that ever explained? I know that Fang and Vanille completed their focus for them by turning into Ragnarok and destroying Orphan but they had no reason to turn back.
Maybe it's something that will be explained in XIII-2, maybe its why Lightning got sent to that world, and maybe Sazh, Hope and Snow are there too?

Having just finished, I'm not sure. It's made evident that the crystal state will end eventually earlier; it may have just been caused rapidly, either by Fang/Vanille or the destruction of the Cocoon Fal'cie. Another possibility may have been that they didn't really "succeed" in their focus (Lightning, Snow, Sazh, Hope) because they were essentially just along for the ride as Fang/Vanille took their powers to become Ragnarok. At the same time, they didn't fail either, having lended their powers, thus preventing them from being Ci'Eth and ridding them of the mark.

All speculation, but it is probably directly related to Fang/Vanille's sacrifice.
 
I am not looking forward to it as much as I had other FF games. Not even because of the costume, but because I am worried they cannot top what they've done though what they had done before was not even that good anyway. We'll see. No matter what, I'm getting it. I spent so much time playing XIII I may as well get it's sequel.
 
I think there is reason to be hopeful for this game if you disliked the last one.

By all indications, this is Square's effort to appeal to their western fans, who prefer open-world gaming, than their eastern ones (who I have read rather more appreciated FFXIII). They are taking seemingly everything that western fans disliked (lack of freedom is the big one, auto-battle, certain characters) and flipping it on its head. Less so in the battle system case, but then that's getting a make-over involving more control based on the action-commands and this monster catching.

It is promising, to me. I do hope they don't make the store a tad nonsensical in an effort to appeal to western fans though (the story protagonist is Serah...where is Snow, her husband[presumably by now since it has been 5 years], who is supposed to be doing everything to protect her, when Serah is getting attacked by monsters and going on a dangerous adventure? I do hope they aren't "putting him on a bus", so to speak).

It wouldn't make much sesne for Snow to be where Lightning is either...at the end of the episode-I novel, Lighting essentially leaves because she trusts Snow with Serah, for good reason. Snow would understand this in some respect, and I don't see him leaving her anytime soon after that whole ordeal, with no one to protect her but NORA.
