Ok, I am at the first Barthandelus fight before you reach the half way point in Final Fantasy XIII. I have read many threads and forums on this subject, tried out their tactics and none of them work. What makes this even worse is the piggyback strategy in the guide for this game does not work. Heres the piggyback strategy I have been trying to use...

Before the Battle
1.) Upgrade all party members to maximum levels in crystarium (already did).
2.) Create Hero`s Charge Paradigm
3.) Equip Gold bangle to Hope and 2 Tungsten bangles to Lightning.

During the Battle
1.) Use Bully paradigm to beef up party with status effects and give Barthandelus negative status effects.
2.) Use Diversity when party needs to be healed and switch to Relentless assault to stagger his armor. Weaknesses of his pieces of armor are...

Left Pauldron- Lightning
Left Ailette- Fire
Right Pauldron- Ice
Right Ailette- Water

Using this strategy I easily defeat his armor but the serious problems come in the 2nd half of the battle.

Piggyback strategy for 2nd half of battle
1.) Use Bully to beef up party and give Barthandelus status ailments.
2.) Switch between Diversity and Relentless assault to stagger opponent

After he is staggered and starts using Destrudo it says...
1.) Use Hero`s charge to refresh status enhancements and heal Lightning
2.) Use Solidarity to reduce the damage taken by Destrudo and for Hope to heal Lightning automatically after being attacked.
3.) resume same strategy as before to stagger.

Here is the problem, it is doing its job to hold my own in the fight but this strategy takes too long. By the time I get anywhere near depleting his health bar, Lightning dies from the Doom spell. I tried summoning odin to revive Lightning after dying, but once odin revives Lightning the spell just comes back and she gets killed anyway. I tried using relentless assault on him while he is charging for Destrudo but it doesnt bring up his stagger gauge anywhere near half to reduce the damage of the Destrudo attack. I have tried everything I could, but nothing I am doing is hurting him fast enough to kill him before Lightning dies from the Doom spell. As you can see, this fight is driving me to the very limits of my sanity :x3:. Even Ultima Weapon from FFVIII was easier for me to beat than this guy, and he is a party killing machine. If it helps, the characters I am using in this battle are Lightning, Hope, and Fang. I am really determined to beat this game, but I have to figure out a way to get past this buthole first:cry:.

Mmkay. I would suggest going into this battle with Fortisol and Aegisol if at all possible. Only apply shell and Protect to Lightning if possible, then take care of his armor.

Debuff him quick BEFORE Destrudo. If you have time to buff, go ahead, but it's not incrediblt important if you've maxed your Crystarium. Don't bother reducing damage when he starts using Destrudo. Go straight in there with Relentless Assault and make sure Lightning is using the strike attacks. Aquastrike, Sparkstrike etc. The closer you are to barthandelus when he actually finishes with Destrudo, the less damage that's done.

On another note, how well levelled up are your weapons? I suggest having Lightning or Fang at Tier 2 at the very least.

Im maybe a little rusty at this, I defeated Bart back in March lol

The best strategy I can think of to Spam magic spells and hit Bart with regular physical attacks too whilst P.Shifting between 2 ravagers and comm and 2 ravagers and Medic
Even have 3 Ravagers if you feeling lucky.

You should have enough time to beat him with Doom active.......Light and Fang have the fastest attacks sequences in FFXIII so they are the best to defeat him quickly, Oh yeah try and push the Chain Gauge as high ass you can get tit before you switch in your 2 comms to belt this fucker into submission.

I know the frustration, and TBPH the feeling of victory is not that enriching because ypu spend the time wondering how.......... the fuck......they thought that battle would be enjoyable:rage:

Dont get me started on FFFXIII!

Mmm...I'll tell ya, I haven't been at this point in the game in about a year, so its been awhile. I also had problems with the first Barthandelus battle I do remember. I think I died at least 4 or 5 times before I finally beat him, so I feel your pain.

What I can remember doing is going back and upgrading the weapons that I had at the save point before the battle the best that I could....I also stuck as many HP increasing items on Hope especially, cause we all know he's weak....and I think my battle party was lightning, Vanille, and Hope. Also, have a boatload of phoenix downs, because you will need them. I switched between a few different paradigms. The one I initially started with was more strategy-based paradigm. Hope was a Synergist to get things sped up for my party and to get as many buffs up as possible, Lightning was focused on constantly attacking one of the heads, and Vanille was Sabbing Barthandelus. When Barty starts throwing the more serious spells at you, I switched over to a paradigm where Lightning was still attacking the same head, and Hope and Vanille were healing as medics...and that I would use at the last 1/2 of him getting ready to use his Destrudo attack...and it allowed me to hang on just barely to be able to continue my sequence again. My last paradigm was an all out attack- Lighning-Com Vanille Ravager and Hope-Ravager. This attack I used on one head at a time at the times when he wasn't attacking me so heavily at the beginning of the battle and during the beginning half of Barty's readying for his Destrudo attack.

Really, this battle is about having good timing with your switches and beating the crap out if him while he's readying for the big attack, but don't get greedy and do it for too long before he actually hits you with it because you'll need to have everyone healed all the way before you get hit with it because someone will need to be alive to be able to phoenix down everyone and start healing again, and then hitting again. Hopefully this works for you :monster:

I just fought Barthandelus using Jenna Angel`s strategy along with the piggyback strategy and... I WON!!!:holyshit::highfive: I got it to where Barthandelus had like a centimeter of health left and when the Doom spell was about to kill me, then I summoned Odin and used him to finish Barthandelus. Thanks guys for helping me defeat Barthandelus, I have finally found renewed interest in Final Fantasy XIII after months of not playing Final Fantasy because of my frustration.

it can be useful to use a librascope. it worked for me, then those elemental things and then a saboteur is on :)

Try glitching it, when he charges destructo summon your ODIN, then just before he shoots it activate Gesalt mode and the destructo attack will miss completly
