My poor eyes......i've been looking at bad cosplay all night and that doesnt come close to those scene skanks >__<

Empress, everybody follows the crowd, I love REM but I didn't 'discover' them, if nobody followed the crowd then we wouldn't have great bands.

Personally I have no problem with Emos. It's not my taste but its better than repetitive dance remixes of classic songs IMHO. Let them listen to what they want to. 'I likes what I likes' as Popeye once said, and wise words indeed.

PS. (RE, the photos) I don't know, I think she's kinda cute.

Well I'm not even sure where to tie those girls in. I think scene would better label their social class. Weedwhacker hair, forcibly skinny, too much makeup...

Harsh.

Goths - Generally overwieght sexually repressed vampire wannabees

Punks - Social Anarchists without being either social, or anarchistic

Man, I was going to go on but I can't be arsed, its just a way of expressing yourself, we've done it for years, live and let live. Expression is important whether its your scene or not.

Well that first one is definitely scene...i have no idea what the second is >_<

BACK on topic concerning the position on Emos. Yes, I have returned if you haven't noticed.

Anyways, if they really seem to bother you, then ignore them. I mean, who cares what other people are doing unless it affects your friends, family, or yourself. I personally hate the trend, but I do occasionally listen to the music. Not ALL of it is bad. It's discrimination (If you hate Emos) to classify every song as horrible.

Now touching on the Emo trend of cutting. Emo = Emotional. Emotional usually touches upon depression, but not every single Emo takes it out through cutting. It seems that as people start to hate the "emo" population, that more generalizations occur that are bad towards it. Similar to the homosexual trend of "You're so gay, man". It's really no different. Sure, I give you that it may be a "trend", but it's hardly done on a widespread level. Only the serious, hardcore people do it for who knows what reason. Again, an overstatement.

Back on my first point: Why do people care so much about what other people do? It seems that our fear for the unknown has achieved greater heights. Since we are not of the genre, we can only hate, punish, and insult those of it. Many people, if not all, int his thread despise them and rant them out. Yet have you really, like I said before, tried ignoring them? Seriously, it's really just pathetic to see a whole thread bashing an entire genre that is based off of music.

Final words:

Who fucking cares what they do. If they want to cut ad attempt at killing themselves, let them. One more out of the gene pool and one more to not complain about.

Yes, I hate them, but I tend to shrug it off and not make a big deal of it. Similar to Goths, Punks, Etc., Emos are just another fashion thing that seems to uproot. Oh, I do like some of the hairstyles, though. ;D

Actually it's not the unknown to me, since i used to be emo a year or so ago, although i never did listen to their craptasic music. And looking back, i can speak from experience that emo-ness is stupid, selfish, and repugnant.

And i complain, for one, because they're annoying and cry about trivial matters. Also, they made cutting cool (yes, it IS widespread among them, just look on myspace or vampire freaks or go to the mall), which is stupid in itself and now kids with real issues aren't taken seriously.

I never said it wasn't any of those things, I was just stating the fact that many of the population over-generalize the whole fad. And, well, apparently I was correct. Since most people associate the music with the fashion, you're not part of that generalization and my standings are correct.

And i complain, for one, because they're annoying and cry about trivial matters. Also, they made cutting cool (yes, it IS widespread among them, just look on myspace or vampire freaks or go to the mall), which is stupid in itself and now kids with real issues aren't taken seriously.

And you complain. Hey, what a coincidence. Don't the "emos" complain too?

Anyways, based on population, the "clicks" don't exceed more than a normal proportion. I give you that it is on a national level, but nowhere near seeing them overtaking other "styles". Therefore, it is widespread, but only in limited numbers.

And no, cutting wasn't made "cool" by them. In fact, like many of you are stating, it isn't cool at all. It only appears to the fad itself, and even then, not ALL of them are stupid to do so. I am positive people find that cutting is only cool if you are part of the genre, and that those people are part of the genre itself.

And yes, kids with real problems are taken seriously unless they are a part of the "emo" click.

I never, ever see people show their scarred arms. They often try to hide it, due to the jerkoffs that tease them for it.

Wrong. It's a female disorder. Most guys don't do it. It's not like they do it everyday. it's just when you get depressed and you want to throw everything into the wind... I've been down this road before. You should be ashamed for believing in stereotypes. We're all a little emo when it comes to this type of person who is always being bashed.

Speaking of fail....

Actually, my senior project in a public policy class was on cutting. I'm not talking in stereotypes. I interviewed many kids who went to my school, cutters via the internet, and a psychiatrist from Four Winds (a local mental health institution). MANY MANY kids (who were classifiably *gasp* EMO) cut themselves and had cutting competitions with their friends. Many of the students interviewed told me that it was a bragging right to have cut the deepest. They also told me that they started cutting because their friends did it. Additionally, I hang around something called livejournalsecret, which is a place where livejournal users can anonymously submit secrets. It's common knowledge that a good portion of livejournal subscribers are self described emos....and a large portion of the secrets are about cutting. Many of them include pictures of the cuts on the person who submitted the secret and then some sort of text that makes it seem as though the person is PROUD of their cuts. As for people hiding their cuts, I have personally seen MANY people who show them off like they're war metals. It's sickening.

As for the whole "it's a female disorder" thing.....you clearly have been misinformed. I personally knew a male who cut himself. Additionally, I asked the psychologist about the gender of cutters. She said that while more females than males cut themselves, a significant number of males DO cut. She told me that in her experience, males tend to prefer burning themselves to cutting. But cutting is NOT a female disorder.

If you actually pay attention to what I wrote, you'll notice that I rip on the emos who made cutting "cool" and "trendy." I know that cutting is a very terrible disorder, and I didn't, in any way, insinuate that anyone who cuts themselves is "emo." I was referring to the emodouches who cut themselves, take pictures of it, and put it all over their myspace. It completely undermines the seriousness of the disorder, and as I said, makes it harder for people who are actually suffering from some kind of disorder to seek help because they may be labeled "emo" or "an attention whore."

Why thank you for the lovely post ^_^ Saved me alot of trouble.

I think it was...Derek, although it may have been Honest Albel...who in a previous post said that emos hide their cuts. So not true. It's people who actually have the cutting disorder who hide them. I hid mine. Emos brandish them proudly on their forearms and wrists and make them visible for the whole school and internets to see.

Stryfe, you said that "kids with real problems are taken seriously unless they are a part of the "emo" click." Wrong again. I wish that was the case, but it isn't. When people think cutting they think of emos. The cutting disorder never even started to be examined until about the time emos started popularizing it, so that doesn't help matters.

I've heard that cutting is more common in females, but it certainly isn't exclusive to them, it's just like when people say "there's only male gamers." Might be more common to see male gamers, but there's plenty of female ones. As for burning...OUCH...i'd prefer most anything over that.

I don't know what it's like in New York and your part of the internets, but here we act like we're civilized.

I really don't see any of these "emodouches" as you described with their pictures of cut wrists and arms on MySpace. If they ever posted up pictures, I'm sure they were deleted. And this is another thing you can do to help MySpace: Just report the sickening pictures you see. It's not that hard. Just two clicks and an explanation away.

Are you really sure about kids that aren't emo are not getting attention for their problems? I just so happen to not be emo, and every time I bitch about how my classes are setup, they're changed. If I need some kind of mental help, I always get it.

To be honest, I've never, ever seen this kind of thing. Our idiot emo kids hide their cuts and only show it to their friends. I've never seen it shown outside of a bathroom or whatever private location there may be. They would be sent home on sight of such things.

I once cut myself to see what was so great about it. When I was done, I had a bloody fist that stung like a whip everytime I moved it.

Don't comment on that. :monster:

I think that it's really hard to debate about this topic since all our emos are from different places. Erythritol is from New York, I'm from Virginia, and VR is from god knows where. xD

I think I'm done with this topic. There's too many different places with different emos.

i could care less. i guess some people just have different ways of dealing with depression, or perhaps they're all starved for attention. and if thats the case, then it's kind of pathetic and i feel sorry for them. i usually don't bother them becuase they're generally dark, scary, figures that look like theyre ready to take out a sword and cut me in 2 if i say the wrong thing.

the only thing they do that bothers me really, is when they walk around school with headphones not even on their head, and they're blasting their headbanger music so loud that the whole school's having a headbanger party.

how obnoxious.

Ive been labelled an emo cause I wear glasses and wear anything black! I dont consider myself as an emo. I wear galsses cause I need to and wear black cause it makes you slimmer and I just like the colour.

I just leave them be. As I say "Emos ... theyre just ... there..."

Quit talking crap on me. >>>:0

I actually do it all the time. xD

You're tying in rockers and goths with emos, dude. They're not the same thing. :P

I really have no idea where the hell scenesters came from, but they popped up about the same time as emos, and their fashion is just as bad, if not worse since they just luuurve those huge, gaudy Mardi Gras bead necklaces.

Emos are just as much attention whores as scenesters, too. Scene kids have those ugly double piercings on both sides of their lips, emos have their cuts.

DUUUUDE. I can't believe i forgot to mention the other big thing about emos that pisses me off: the whole "bi" trend. Somehow it's become uber cool for emo girls (but especially boys) to be "bi" and make pics kissing each other.

"Liek ZOMG, emo boys R sooo hott and bi!" Um, no, kissing someone of the same gender is nothing. If you were really bi you'd plow them, and i highly doubt that emo "bi" couples would do that since it's just for show most of the time.

nah i dont really care as long as they dont do crazy things :)
actually some other people are not really emos

I wouldn't say I hate the emo culture, but I loathe the attention seeking. It's not like the rest of the world fails to have issues; they don't have to cut themselves because some random girl won't talk to them, nor write a shitty poem about it.

The majority of "emos" these days however, are just 'scene' kids who just happen to like what's on the shelves. They whore attention themselves, claiming to be original and misunderstood, but I have a bit more tolerance for those people. Why? They're automatically shunned for wearing make-up and tight jeans. I hate tight jeans, but that doesn't mean to say I'm forced to hurl verbal abuse at them for wearing said item.

I have an emo/scene friend, and I think he's fine. He just like some of the clothing. Nothing wrong with that.

Emo is only bad when they blow upset out of proportion or grab attention. They always dress to turn heads and they, for the most part, see every situation that people face as if it was the end of the world. They just need a bit more growing up to do so they can realise that huritng themselves isn't the way to go and that wearing jeans that cut off the blood supply is NOT cool. And they may also need to realise that the attention they get is 'Wow, they look stupid.' as opposed to 'Wow, they look good.' more often than not.

Ugh... scene is ten times worse than emo subculture. Scene is a fashionista elitist trend in the guise of indie music culture. In myspace terms, both are really shitty, but in context of what they are outside of the mainstream, emo is a lot better.
