So what do you guys think of emos and their culture? Love it? Hate it? Don't care?

Personally i hate it. Why is it that emos are middle class suburban white kids, yet they're the most depressed of any people? It just takes being an attention whore to a whole new level when you cry about how your parents don't understand you and you got rejected by a girl. ZOMG NO WAI! Parents never understand their kids, it's nothing new, get over it. And maybe a girl would like you if you had a normal haircut, didn't write bad poety and didn't crush your genitalia with your 12-year old sister's pants.

Foocha emos.

You mean when it was more about real issues people had rather than just generic "my girl left me i cant get over her" crap?

Well, I once posted my views on another forum, and here's what I said:

I haven't met many emos. Those that I have have actually seemed to lead perfectly happy lives... In a way, it seems as though it's becoming more of a type of fashion. I'm not saying this is true in all cases, but those who are emos here tend to try to make depression look cool. They actually parade the fact they've self-harmed (well, scratches all up the arm may not count, but they're trying to parade it).

I'm not against emos but often they do seem to have a rather distorted view of what it is to be depressed. I've never been depressed but it's still not hard to see this. Like I said, they seem to think it's cool to parade that they're depressed when they're probably not...

I've heard many say that they just want attention but I don't want to make any solid remarks about them. I haven't met enough emos to actually know what they're thinking or why.

Some people will have problems and will be called emo when they're not. It can be hard to define exactly what an emo is now. Some people believe that anyone who shows more emotion than others is an emo, even if that emotion is justified; a view I'm not fond of myself. Others would say that it's when that emotion is expressed to the utmost extreme.

I also feel that there's a difference between looking like an emo and being an emo. Those with hair over their eyes are often automatically thought of as emo when they may not be. I don't see anything wrong with looking like one. Some people may not care about the stereotype given. They may simply want to have hair over their eyes. It's a style, and shouldn't be constantly associated with cutting and depression.

But speaking of depression...Everyone gets depressed at some stage in their life, whether it be when they're 15, 25 or even 55. It's highly unlikely that anyone will get to the end of their life without having being depressed. But does that make them emo? I'd say no. It's human. Do you not think it would be better to help those people who are truly depressed, rather than throw "emo!" at them?

The term can be used as an insult and some will use the word "emo" as a form of bullying. It's a label and once someone is given that label, they are known for it, even if they don't cut themselves or talk about depression. However, there are those who are labelled who are more like another breed of chav. "Emo" is used so widely now that it's hard to tell from one person to the next.

I neither hate nor love them. If I get irritated at them I just stay away and let them be. they will be themselves afterall and we can't do anything about it. the only ones I REALLY hate are nazis and hypocrites.

Alright, well I have mixed feelings about emos. I don't like most emos but I despise scene kids. Scene kids are almost emo but they think they're elite. (Ugh, they're just as bad as theater kids *twitch*)

As for emos, I can understand that your emo for a reason. Reason such as family, death, or abusive life. Although, sometimes it can be taken too far. You can't always use those as an excuse, everyone has problems. Some people can deal problems better than others, but it doesn't mean you to have over hype them.

One of my boyfriend's friend wife is pretty emotional. She had an abusive step mother and her biological mother was a trashy whore. I can't really say anything else about her. :/ She doesn't usually dress emo but she listens to the music and go to concerts.

Other than that, I don't like teenage emos as in: 'My life sucks because....birds died and like....my dad won't let me go out Friday.' No only that, but they look up to retards like Kiki Kannibal and Jeffree Star. "Like....I totally can understand Kiki Kannibal and like...the hardships shes going through...." Right, what hardships? Her life is so tough because some guy doesn't like her? Cry me a fucking river.

basically 50% of my high school was emo, and the weird thing is I barely ever see them at college. I always thought that it was just a fase some kids went through to become more excepted by others who basically feel and look the same as they do.

I hate the depressed all the time emos. It's like they think they're probems are so much worse than everyone elses when actually they have it better than most people.

Same here. I don't really mind the fashion so much (although the cutting trend is inane), but it annoys the piss out of me that they think their lives are so terrible just because their jobs suck and they have social problems. Some people actually do have clinical depression, and usually they can't help that because it runs in the family (like how it runs on my dad's side), but strangely enough the clinically depressed people don't listen to emo music and crap like that. I never did. And generally all it takes is a change of environment or job or something to fix the depression up, but emos...well there's really nothing to change for them since their lives are usually pretty good. Actually, what the Encyclopedia Dramatica says about them sums it up pretty well:

It is common knowledge that the emo subculture is only for middle-class white people, who have more problems than everyone else on the earth combined, such as being dumped, being rejected, being grounded etc. Basically those guys over in Ethiopia could only dream of the pain and torment that these emofags are going through.

Everyone deals with crap, and yeah, life is pretty much crap and it's unfair. But unless it's something really devastating that's happened to you, like the death of a family member or friend, then don't act like it's the end of the world. Find some stuff that'll help make your horrid suburban life more bearable. Or look at the situation in Darfur, maybe that'll help you appreciate your life. Actually scratch that second one. Emos tend to be very self absorbed so i doubt they'd care.

I really dislike emo kids, honestly. While the music is whiny and at worst annoying, the whole subculture that goes with it just annoys the hell out of me.

The cutting: Emos made cutting fashionable. No joke, kids have little contests to see who can cut the deepest. And then brag about it. They proudly show off their scarred arms. That's sick and really fucking stupid. Cutting is actually an indication of a serious mental disorder, and for the emos to make it their new thing, along with little plastic bracelets with dinosaurs and helicopters and shit on them, is really disgusting. It makes it difficult for a person with an actual PROBLEM to seek attention. Emo kids who cut themselves tend to be little attention whores who can't think for themselves and think that using their arms as a carving board is trendy. Assholes.

The whole depressed thing: Oh, I'm sorry, is your little white kid suburban life too taxing? Mommy yelled at you for using her expensive eye liner? Get the hell over yourself. Children in Africa have problems. People who are poverty stricken have problems. You're not depressed; you're bored, little emo kid. Hey, here's an idea! Since emos always claim that they feel so much more DEEPLY than the rest of us, why don't they stop writing shitty livejournal poetry, and y'know, do something for those who actually HAVE problems?

I also really dislike scene kids. First off, they look really stupid. Their hair is just....inconceivable. Why would someone *want* to have hair like that? They also tend to be snobby, arrogant, and elitist. Wow, congrats. You look like you smeared tar on your eyes, raided a five year old's closet, got dressed in the dark, and had a fight with a very angry lawnmower armed with a can of bleach. Bozo the clown has a more coordinated sense of fashion. I want to tell them all to get over themselves.

I really can't wait until this damn fad goes away.

Original emo culture can be summed up by the old Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Emo culture as it is today is comprised of over-stimulated teens who write poetry inspired by the oh so wonderful talents (note the sarcasm) of Evanescence and the like.

ZOMG. I have a rant about emos on my myspace and i mentioned the very same thing ^_^ This is what i put:

The fuckers turned cutting into a damned trend, so now people who actually cut because of serious problems and not to be "cool" are just labled as emo. And have you ever looked at an emo's cuts? They pose at cutting, for God's sake. They cut just barely deep enough to form a scab, it's pathetic.

I laughed sooo hard at that part about Bozo the clown, that was just pure win xD And i would have to agree with you, scene fashion is horrendous. I especially love how they wear those gaudy Mardi Gras beads over polka dotted shirts, it's just soooo tasteful. When i was in the mall yesterday and passed by hot topic, out on the display window they actually had a scene outfit set up...yuck. And i hate scene kids' music, they always listen to crap indie bands and all these "metal" bands with absolutely no talent whatsoever for music OR screaming, like Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu.

lmfao, Pete and Pete? Oh god, it's been ages since i've seen that...and i only saw it twice, come to think of it. And Evanescence are poetic geniuses compared to most of the other bands out there, like My Chemical Romance and Panic! At the Disco. It's bad enough that the lyrics are crap about how they got dumped and how no one understands them, but every frigging band sounds the same! Back in the 90's we had a generic pop sound with the Backstreet Boys and N SYNC, now we have the generic emo sound with very faint punk rock elements.

I don't care that much about them but it does irritate me how whiny and outspoken they're becoming. Their Myspace profiles are all the same, no background, hard music, REALLY BLACK EYES which arn't even attractive, stupid piercings which would look terrible in a job interview eek and they arn't even unique. They ALL copy one another..

What bugs me is the emo 'wannabes'. My friend is/was one of those except she was obvious much less hardcore. But the rings that stretch your ear.. she only has a 3mm and it looks MINGIN'. Why did she do it? Hardly cause she herself thought it looked attractive? And then one buys an 'indie' scarf and wears converse and puts bleach in their hair and then they all fucking do. Mon' the students! Least we have some godamn originality!

It's the same as a lot of subcultures - once it turned mainstream and faddish, the original meaning of the subculture morphed into something else.

Most emos are antisocial and always have been. Of course they're going to act like they're crazynuts when they get rejected. They don't know how to handle it because they've never been in such a situation.

Not all emos are poets... Emokids that are normal make quite an impact with their hair and attract attentions that are unwanted, actually.

Just because someone is "emo" does not mean they cut themselves. It's just a label that's been slapped on them. Don't even mention the dark rituals and crazy shit like that. :monster:

I never, ever see people show their scarred arms. They often try to hide it, due to the jerkoffs that tease them for it.

Emo people cut themselves off from any social status they may have had besides with their friends that will eventually do something retarded.

Wrong. It's a female disorder. Most guys don't do it. It's not like they do it everyday. it's just when you get depressed and you want to throw everything into the wind... I've been down this road before. You should be ashamed for believing in stereotypes. We're all a little emo when it comes to this type of person who is always being bashed.

That's your opinion, bud. I've never heard that kind of music, but to each his/her own.

To be honest, I'm sick of looking at this thread. So many people are caught up in stereotypical bullshit they've heard. The first thing that comes when talking about emos is cutting. Pathetic crapspackle.

Then OMG, they listen to the music with all the depressing lyrics and screaming. Most of them think you can all burn in hell with your rap and whiney pop music.

And then the fucking hair. :monster:

I think I've made my point in this thread....

Also, please add: "I don't really mind them at all" to the poll, please.

Haha, you know my dad says the exact same thing about people with alot of piercings? He's always like "good luck getting a job, people will take one look at them and decide to not hire them"

It's the same as a lot of subcultures - once it turned mainstream and faddish, the original meaning of the subculture morphed into something else.

And of course since GAP owns hot topic, and GAP is all about being trendy, that only helped solidify the emo/scene trends.

Neither are rappers/wangsters, but the emos aren't complaining, are they? :monster:

*gasp*

I never knew GAP owned hot topic. xD

You haven't heard how critical emos are of everything, have you? Try browsing around on Vampire Freaks sometime, after a half hour of that you'll want to cut yourself >_<

Yeah, GAP owns Hot Topic, least that's what i've heard. And the head managers at Hot Topic stores usually do look like the GAP types too, at least the one here does.

Hmm...it seems to me as if anorexia is tied into the emo/scene fad. I'd say it's more coordinated with the scene crowd, rather than the emo crowd though.

Let's stop and analyze a few photos.
Just...a few random pictures that I pulled off of myspace.
