hey, if any of you guys played ff4, surely you guys noticed Edge, the prince of Eblan having a MAJOR crush on Rydia, the summoner. do you guys have anything to comment on this?

It was pretty obvious xD

I'd liek to theink they hooked up in the end, I thought it was really funny how into her he seemed to be and she was just soo not interested, but I reckon she was hjust playing hard to get. I thought it was sweet

hey, me too! i seriously like seeing them together. Edge is charming in his way i guess, and Rydia is totally acting not interested. but i do think that she might just be interested in him. she doesn't give that many hints about how she truly feels.

Rydia seemed to be square's first attempt at a progressive strong female character. (Well I guess that you could say Leila from II was but she had about as much depth as a piece of paper). After her maturation Rydia was smart, headstrong, self-sufficient, and was one of the parties main offensive threats. Funny that she should be paired with the games chief mysoginist. I find it good for Edge: Rydia is the only woman that he cannot have. One would hope that, should they end up together, she would not be merely another one of his conquests, but rather someone from whom he can learn, and grow. Of course, the threat of mega flare would probably keep him from ever cheating. :) Oh, and as a hopeless romantic, yes I hope that they end up together

Hahah Rydia was no not interested in edge. Maybe Rydia thought Edge was just weird. Anyways I think he has a freakin Crazy Crush on Rydia or he just can not stand being next to pretty girls Like Rydia and Rosa. Anyways Edge is a ninja and Rydia a summoner. If they get married Rydia would have to be forced to be a Princess.

i agree. Rydia is definitely one strong female addition to the party. in ff1 and 2, the girl characters are mostly white mages. Rydia is the sort that can fend off for herself, and yeah, she is smart. and i'm sure it drives Edge completely nuts that Rydia seems kinda unaffected by his flirting. i do admire his persistance though and i'm sure Rydia might just like him.

I thought it was pretty cute too. I admired Rydia and I found Edge quite entertaining, so it was a good pairing overall, although Rydia did seem a little oblivious. Or maybe she didn't really take his flirting as seriously. But I never really did see any reaction from Rydia, or if there was, only a very subtle one. In any case though, hypothetically speaking, should they ever get together - I reckon that Edge should act quickly and forbid Rydia to return to the summoner's world. She'll age quickly that way. One would hope that age does not play a factor but sometimes it does. In the world of Final Fantasy, anything can happen though. xD

I was surprised to see that Cecil never acted in anyway protective toward Rydia in this regard. He obviously feels a great deal of guilt about her mother in the beginning, and is her literal physical protector in Kaipo when the Baron soldiers come to take her. However, after their reunification in Giott Castle he largely seems to ignore her. Given their history I would have liked to see him sort of assume the "big brother" role and have some sort of confrontation with Edge over Edge's lustful advances

Cecil is protective of her. this is proven when he orders Rosa and Rydia out of the Lunar Whale before confronting Zemus. but my theory is that she is independent and is very much able to take care of herself. She has an air about her that makes people not worry too much. about edge, well maybe cecil just thinks nothing much of edge's flirting. edge is a good person, remember. has anyone played ff4 : the after?

SPOILERS FOR FINAL FANTASY IV : THE AFTER (ENDING FOR RYDIA AND EDGE)
READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
ha ha.sorry for the cheesy title. this game is the sequel to final fantasy 4. well this game is available only in Japan cellphones, so i'll never be able to play this game plus i don't understand japanese, so i decided to check the final fantasy wiki and this is what they stated :"Edge leaves Eblan Castle for Mist. He dismisses the Eblan Four, but they swear to await further orders. In Mist, Rydia is currently raising a small girl named Chloe (who appears to be a child version of Minus). Both Leviathan and Ashura arrive, greeting Rydia and saying that they figured that since Rydia wasn't able to make it into the Feymarch last time she tried, it was their turn to pay her a visit. Edge arrives to see Rydia and Leviathan accidentally blurts out that it was Edge who invited them". well, any comments? the statement kinda leaves us at a cliffhanger.all the same, i was pleased to read this.ps.this is what happened 17 years after the first game.

That is a good point (and very interesting info by the way regarding FFIV: The After). However, I still found it odd that after the reunification we saw very little meaningful interplay between Rydia and Cecil: Their "moment" in Kaipo was one of the more significant ones in the game, and the murder of Rydia's mother seems to be the main source of Cecil's guilt (well, maybe that and the slaughter at Mysidia). After the meet back up its like "Rydia...yay...After Golbez!" I find nothing wrong with it, just a explicit decision by the game designers to have a plot driven story rather than a character one.

However, I have gotton off topic. I think (w/o knowing anything about the After) that there could be severe tension in any potential Edge/Rydia relationship. Edge is the crown king of Elbana, and has duties as such. Rydia is torn between the summon world and the human world: She conceivably has a wish to rebuild Mist but also has ties to the summoned world. And if she spends considerable time in the Summon World wouldn't she age considerable whilst there? Could lead to some problems (although I doubt that Edge is intimidated at all by older women...)

well, you are right in saying that there was very little interplay between rydia and cecil. the reunification part showed little connection between rydia and cecil. maybe there was too much story to cover, so they put that aside, but that is still an important aspect. if i'm not wrong, later on in ff4 the after, in the end, rydia decided to stay in Mist and continue rebuilding Mist with the cooperation of cecil, edge and the others.that's why the king and queen of feymarch decided to visit her as i stated before. this info i collected from wikipedia, you know, about the reconstruction. i have a feeling she cannot return to feymarch(on what reason i don't know). i'm saying this cos i read the ff wiki and they stated this :"Both Leviathan and Ashura arrive, greeting Rydia and saying that they figured that since Rydia wasn't able to make it into the Feymarch last time she tried, it was their turn to pay her a visit." plus, she is caring now for Chloe (the one i mentioned earlier).edge on the other hand, won't leave Eblan, though he constantly travels to Mist, so who knows what will happen. i'm hoping rydia is gonna start accepting him.

the thing i felt funny about was at Rosa and Cecil's wedding. u know, when Edge and everyone else came. when Rydia came to the wedding, Edge pretended she wasn't there, and tried to ignore her when he was actually longing for her. i think that part of Edge makes him seem comical.

Awesome drawing

My thoughts on Edge and Rydia pairing?
Well first of all, i like to say "No thanks" to any sequels of FFIV made notby it's original creator/scenariographist ;)
Uhm...Edge..what a poor guy, i can't recall the storyline really good, but i remember he was much of a ladies man (i think?!) and got so avoided by Rydia :gasp:
Hehe, other than that I always loved his fighting, one of my strongest characters in the game.

Gorgeous fanart... I feel like it's going to be my new desktop soon. 8D

Anyway, I adore this pairing though I must admit it seemed a bit random. Though Edge seemed to be 'the ladies man', it meant to me that he was a natural flirt. It was easy to see that he had his little eye on a special lady throughout the game, moreso than any other. ;> Rydia didn't seem to much ignore him, but rather, played a little hard to get.

I always figured that Rydia thought Edge was cute, but treated him with a sort of “get serious” attitude. I think we should also keep in mind that Rydia had gone from little girl to young adult and probably has some reservations in that department (I doubt she ever dated any of the monsters when she was growing up).

I played FFIV: The After (The after what?), and there’s nothing explicit concerning their relationship.

once again, credit on the drawing goes to lucypupy, who posted this drawing on photobucket. well, i agree that there's nothing THAT explicit about Rydia and Edge's relationship in FFIV:The After, but there's something definitely there, cause it kinda hinted at the end about a possible pairing. I hope so! i kinda agree with you guys thoughts on the pairing, and about Edge being a strong character in the game. i also sorta agree with Nikkuchan about Rydia's attitude towards Edge. there might be truth to the fact that Rydia is playing hard to get, hmmm...

some people think that Edge is an annoying jerk, a brat and so on. . but i think that Edge is charming in his attempt to get to know Rydia. After he got to know Rydia, his flirtatious attitude seemed to have significantly reduced (though now he flirts constantly with Rydia instead). honestly, i think him being with Rydia will really improve all his other weak points; such as trying to stop being flirtatious.

I've only played it on SNES and i've never noticed this. Is it only on the new version?

actually, in both the snes and ds version Edge noticeably has feelings for Rydia. There are a few moments only, because Edge appears late in the game. The most evident scene that Edge likes Rydia very much is at the end.
