edge's crush on rydia in ff4

actually, in both the snes and ds version Edge noticeably has feelings for Rydia. There are a few moments only, because Edge appears late in the game. The most evident scene that Edge likes Rydia very much is at the end.

i agree. Rydia is definitely one strong female addition to the party. in ff1 and 2, the girl characters are mostly white mages.

Buh? Setting aside no females in the LW, Maria suits the Black magician role just as well as she fits the white one, just as well as she fits the raw physical attacker role.

And Rosa's a WM, but she's not helpless either.

Anyways, in TA, Edge is still popping off to Mist to help Rydia with the rejuvenation of the town. Though little is said of their relationship, she doesn't seem opposed to it.

oh,sorry. Maria is a strong character. i'm not really saying that white mages are helpless. in fact, in ff1, i used a white mage as the lead. And Rosa, she saved the party many times (Curaja) in ff4 when we needed healing and were going to lose. besides, i like her. Cecil's white magic is strong, but Rosa's is stronger. Anyways, yeah, in ff 4 :The After, Rydia is not so rejecting to Edge. Well, she was never actually rejecting, only pretty oblivious to his attention, i think. some people say she's playing hard to get. hopefully, there is something at the end of ff4 the after hinting big about their relationship.

WARNING. THIS MIGHT BE A SUPRISE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO DIDN"T KNOW ABOUT THIS OR DON"T WANT THE SUPRISE TO BE SPOILED>
OK, i was surfing the web about some ff4 info, when i came about some news saying that Square Enix is going to make the sequel to Final Fantasy 4, called Final Fantasy The After Years! I don't know about the details, except that it's a 2D RPG game, and that it's heading for the WII console. I don't have a WII, but I'm still looking forward to it. Now I get to know what really happens to Cecil, Rydia, Edge and the rest rather than reading it off a wiki. And since I heard that there's nothing explicit about Edge and Rydia's relationship here, I want to see it for myself and then judge. I'm sure there's some hint about it somewhere. haha...I am not an overly obsessed person. Just really curious.

Spoiler! :p This is about FF4 (or FF2 for Americans who played it on Super Nintendo originally)

Haha it was so cool to read about this...my younger bro just played the game on computer. He used a tool that allowed him to speed up gameplay by up to 15 times normal on turbo mode or something, so he could explore the map and fight battles faster. It also made it much easier to level up and all final characters were at 99 by the last battle.

As a result of the quicker gameplay I got to watch him play and relive the game as we had played it years before, except it only took 2-3 days of playing.

As I recall, I had thought that Edge and Rydia wound up falling in love and getting married, but it turned out just to be Rosa and Cecil who got married. I wondered if there was an alternate ending I'd missed so I started searching around and found this site.

That was a really cool picture by...lucypupy? I actually saved it to my computer and I may put it up on myspace or something, who knows.

But anyway that would be totally cool if they made a follow up to FF4, as I really grew attached to some of those characters. I always wondered what happened to Kain because he said he needed to continue his training to become a true Dragoon warrior--though he was a very tough character already.

Have him switch between the Drain Lance and the White or Holy Lance and he's virtually unstoppable--it's hard for him to even take damage if one had him use his jump attack in battles.

I think he went to Mt. Ordeals to be tested and perhaps transformed by the light or something..haha I love it!

And then Yang, the Karate master. Man that was one tough dude!

My bro on a previous occasion had used some codes to level up all characters to 99 and I'm pretty sure Yang was by far the toughest--yup, even tougher than Edge, the Ninja, and with way more hit points as well (the max)

Course when Edge used his throwing weapons like the ninja stars he could deal massive damage but anyway, I guess I wanted Edge and Rydia to get together in the end. And if they ever had kids I assumed they'd be really powerful warriors. Imagine a Caller/Ninja, what an amazing combo that could make! Haha.

I totally loved the ninja, Shadow and his attack dog in FF3 (SNES Version) as well and wished they'd have continued that game as well, or made a sequel to it using the same characters perhaps.

I thought maybe Shadow could become a time traveler and his dog (Interceptor was his name) would become bionic or something--funny thoughts. There's just something totally awesome about the character of a seemingly detached, mysterious and dangerous rogue who has the great skills of a highly trained ninja, whose path crosses and intertwines with yours so that you fight together in battle. A character whose past history (like how he became that way) gradually starts to reveal itself over time after the s888 totally hits the fan for him and he's left for dead by his evil employers (the empire, Kefka and the Emperrer) , and we save him. And as this rogue begins to realize the value of true friendship after his life is saved, he becomes a true ally and one willing to sacrifice his own life for friends if need be.

Those two (FF2 and FF3) were some of the most enjoyable games I ever played. My age when I first played them (they were new, like a novelty when I first played! And I was also young enough to really really enjoy them) combined with the time at which the games were originally released combined with the quality of the games, like the really cool story line, cuteness of the characters and coolness of the plots and gameplay...really awesome. Oh yeah and the cool music too.

I'll always be grateful to the creators for making such cool enjoyable games like that.

Also I loved the concept in FF2 of a powerful Dark Knight general gaining a conscience and going through the process of transforning into a Holy Palidin that ends up (with help from dear and powerful friends) saving the entire planet and the moon is really amazing to me and it touches a deep part of my soul.

Like in Mt. Ordeals when Cecil is amazed and overwhelmed that the Light actually spoke to him and called him "son".

I think that in real life the Light itself may also speak to us and acknowlede to us our holyness and familial relationship with it, and that is a powerful, wonderful, beautiful thing.

Then of course there is the making peace with one's sibling and having the courage to acknowledge the love that exists there. Very amazing and beautiful.

So if there is a sequel to either of these games I'll most likely play it. I won't expect the world from the sequels if they are released, but I will hope for it and hope that the sequels are able to compare to the originals. Even if they don't I'll probably still like them.

Certain RPG's are my favs. Like this one and Phantasy Star. Just can't beat 'em. :)

Yeah, FFIV:TA has been out. It was released and finished in 2008, news of it has been out since the release of FFIV:DS in 2007.
The Wiiware release is the translation of it. So it's not being made, it's made. It's being ported, and slated for release, IIRC this summer

Well spoken! The pic you liked..is it the one with Edge and Rydia by lucypupy? I loved it as well. The slightly mediocre one above your post is by me, DawnThrone! It's awesome that you love FFIV as well. It's not so often that people like this game. The majority of them go for games like FF7,FF8 and so on. Not that I don't like those ff series! I love some of them too, like FFVI, FFVII and of course, FFIV. I loved the characters..you might have mentioned most of the themes in FFIV! Anyways, back to the topic. I never actually thought that Edge would get married straight away with Rydia..cause' Rydia kinda kept rejecting his advances....but I seriously wanted them to get together. I totally loved their interaction. If you saw my previous posts, however, you'll notice that at the end of FFIV The After, it is hinted that Rydia will accept and probably get together with Edge. I was so excited when I heard of the ending!

Yeah, by the way, I liked the whole thing about Cecil becoming a paladin. That was a touching and a memorable moment. I think it was one of the most emotional and moving moments for me. Almost all the scenes in FFIV are memorable, especially when they upgraded those scenes in the DS remake of this game. This FF series is a one that is close to my heart..

Wow!! I thought it was in the making..I am so behind in stuff like this. I am seriously looking forward to seeing Edge and Rydia here.

WOW...I found this in the final fantasy wiki 'talk' section titled Rydia (it's like a discussion). In this section, there was a subsection named 'Rydia falls in love with Edge?'. I looked through it and found this:

According to the Settei Siryou, she does. --Crazyswordsman 05:40, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

I thought it was the other way round, because it's pretty obvious Edge has feelings for her. Rydia just usually seems to ignore poor Edge. Diablocon 10:53, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

It says she has "vague affection for him, eventually." --Crazyswordsman 15:28, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

The 'Settei - Siryou' is something like an ultimania (made by the creators of ff4 maybe), and that's from what I've heard. And besides, vague affection is affection anyways.

I've also been thinking..if rydia's affection was vague for edge during the ff4time period, what about in ff4 the after years? It could have been more stronger.

My take on the relationship was that Rydia saw right through Edge. She might be interested, but not in getting played. It was obvious that he was interested in her, and her attitude toward him only made it more real for him. When she showed whatever interest in him at the end of the game, he ignored her because...well, he's a whippersnapper that has some growing up to do. The allusions led me to believe that their paths would merge eventually.

That is some really good insight...but the part about edge ignoring her..he was actually pretending to ignore her when he was really longing for her. As in, when he saw her come in, he looked away as if he doesn't care, but in truth, he really does. I knew about this already, and when I was reading through the ff wiki about edge, this is what was stated (this is a spoiler for those who haven't won the game):

In the ending, Edge takes the throne of Eblan and oversees the reconstruction because of the death of his parents. However, he still longs for Rydia. He later attends Cecil and Rosa's wedding, and pretends to ignore Rydia there.

And I can only assume Edge still keeps his feelings for Rydia in ff4 The After Years. That's a fact, actually. Can't wait to see Rydia's story and his story in that game! They do meet up there, of course. Edge is honest and true about his feelings for Rydia, a good change from his old self.

Ok haven't read through all the posts...

The way I saw it, I always felt Edges feelings were one sided. To me, Rydia did not seem interested in him romantically. Even at the end of the game it seemed like there was not relationship between the two, however Rydia did seem like she was being nice when she approached him at the wedding.

I haven't played the DS version so I don't know if their interaction was any different.

I do agree that Edge's feelings were one sided. I used to think that Rydia did not seem interested in Edge romantically. But after reading through some info, I seem to have changed my mind a little. I still like this pairing, though! If you have read through the previous posts, you might find this info interesting, so I'll lay it down on you. haha..this is still considered not cannon, though. Edge still has feelings for Rydia in the sequel to ff4, ff4: The After Years. So, there is a large possibility she has returned the feelings in some form. Remember, this is a MAJOR spoiler from ff4 The After years.
My other post:

If i'm not wrong, later on in ff4 The After Years, in the end, Rydia decided to stay in Mist and continue rebuilding Mist with the cooperation of Cecil, Edge and the others. That's why the king and queen of Feymarch decided to visit her as i stated before. this info i collected from wikipedia, about the reconstruction. I have a feeling she cannot return to Feymarch(on what reason i don't know). I'm saying this because i read the ff wiki and they stated this :"Both Leviathan and Ashura arrive, greeting Rydia and saying that they figured that since Rydia wasn't able to make it into the Feymarch last time she tried, it was their turn to pay her a visit." Plus, she is caring now for Chloe (the one i mentioned earlier). Edge on the other hand, won't leave Eblan, though he constantly travels to Mist, so who knows what will happen.

This is the info I collected before the ff4 sequel was released outside of Japan. Now, I know the reason in a way why Rydia wasn't able to make it into the Feymarch last time she tried. It is a very hopeful ending, in my opinion. Square Enix is, I think, trying to go in that direction (Edge and Rydia's relationship). Maybe, Rydia has started to accept him, and her feelings for Edge have grown from her 'vague affection' in ff4, to a slightly stronger one in ff4 The After Years. Because the Settei Shoryu was speaking of her affection in ff4. So, how about in the sequel?

I did enjoy the way it ended but in all honesty, I didn't give two cents about Cecil and Rosa's marriage and ascending to the Baron throne. They did not interest me. The main two interests were Rydia and Edge. I just think the two of them were meant for each other. I think he was a bit shy about getting out his true feelings about her at the end of the game, seeing how he was the second to last one to arrive. Looking the other way when Rydia approached him had to be a true sign he did love her.

I always preferred to think that Rydia returned to the Land of the Summoners, she fit in really well. Edge had his own commitments up on the overworld, so I don't think they ended up together. I shouldn't really ignore those events in The After Years, but I must admit I have grown used to turning a blind eye to FF spin-off titles.

It's cool to think that Rydia would live in the land of summons, but sad to know that she would age extremely fast if she continued to live there. Most probably to make it logic, the creators made up a plot that would require Rydia to be prevented from returning to the land of summons and making her live in Mist instead. And it is hinted at the end off ff4TAY that Rydia and Edge MIGHT end up together, based on the ending. (spoiler!!)It seemed that Rydia sorta finally accepted him(but not directly/straightforward). Just like a "thank you... Edge!" in her heart sort of thing.

The After Years isn't a spin off though. It's the real thing.

I agree so much! But in my opinion, Cecil and Rosa are important characters, but my attention during the marriage part was focused entirely on Rydia and Edge. I would really like it if they were together, I guess~

OK, these are some of the moments between Edge and Rydia that I have compiled from FFIV The After Years. Some people haven't played the game, so I warn you that this is FULL of spoilers.

These are the moments only, but not the full story, just a simplified version - and not in proper order.
OK. Here I go!

) At the beginning of Rydia's chapter, we see Rydia and Edward talking about how Cecil and Rosa, and Yang are helping to rebuild Mist. This is seventeen years before The After Years. A scene is showed, where Edge is stopped from leaving the castle, by Seneschal. He says that Eblan's treasures are being sold for profit, and Edge says, wouldn't that be good? Seneschal says he only hopes that is the case, meaning that Edge was lying, and that money actually went for rebuilding Mist. For Rydia! Aww..

2)At the end of Edge's chapter, he, Tsukinowa, Gekkou, Izayoi and Zangetsu, are weakened by the attack from the Mysterious Girl. They flee, and Edge gets a flashback of Rydia ticking him off about stealing an enemy's ship in ff4. He decides to jump off that area to below based on a complete gamble of his life, as they are cornered by the Mysterious Girl. The other ninja's thinking he has a proper plan, follow suit. Coincidentally, Luca's ship, with Rydia on it, were passing through. Edge and the ninja's fell on the ship. Rydia, bewildered, asks him, what, why and how did he fall from the sky, and he says mildly.
"Rydia? Is this heaven?" LOL.

3)In the Crystal's chapter I think, Rydia, Edge, and the others go to Mist. There, the voice of Rydia's mother speaks to her. After the voice finishes speaking to her, Rydia bows down her head. Edge is concerned for her and says : "Rydia . . ." to which Rydia says, "I swear to it, Mother!"

4)In a more previous scene, they see antlions surrounded in a castle (can't remember which, if I'm not wrong, in Damycan Castle) and before Edge attacked them, or something like that, Rydia told him not to hurt them please. And he withdrew because of her, saying "Rydia . . ."

5)When Rydia, Edge, Luca and the Man in Black were at Eblan, they find out Ifrit has been causing the damage. Edge tells them all to leave the guy to him, and Rydia retorts that is suicide! Edge replies that there is no time to lose and tells them to flee. Rydia calls him and tries to stop him, but he runs off. He fights Ifrit but is wounded. As he lays wounded, he says to himself, "So..this is the end. Rydia..did you make it out?"
Then Rubicante appears, and Edge fights him. Rydia all of a sudden appears too, and says, "Edge! You expected me to listen?" and Edge comments jokingly,"Heh.It's your funeral."
Then they learn Ifrit is weak against fire, and Rydia says, "So..fire against fire?" and Edge replies, "You got it!" They learn their band technique "Inferno".
They win against Ifrit, recruiting him, and Rydia scolds him saying, "Have you gone mad?! Challenging an Eidolon by yourself?" and he replies, "Not by myself."

6)After Rydia, Edge, Luca and the Man in Black manage to find Ursula and Yang, where Edge bangs Yang on the head with Sheila's frying pan, and Rydia on Ursula's head with Sheila's ladle, they wake up. The Sylps lend them their powers, and Rydia comments sadly, "So this malaise has reached the Eidolon King himself . . ." and she bows her head. Luca says, "Rydia ..." and Edge comforts her, saying, "Come on, Rydia. Those Eidolons mean much more to you that all that, don't they?"
She answers, "..You're right. They do." Rydia is OK after his comfort only.

7)Oh yeah, we learn in one part in ff4 The After Years after we talk to a person in Mist, that Edge (by the guy's description, we know for sure it's Edge) has often visited Mist to see Rydia, but I think he was hiding from Rydia and spying on her. LOL. Edge, Edge. (Shakes head)

8)They have a band technique together called Broken Heart. Though I'm not sure what this means exactly.

9)Edge leaves Eblan Castle for Mist. He dismisses the Eblan Four, but they swear to await further orders. In Mist, Rydia is currently raising a small girl named Cuore (who appears to be a child version of Maenad). Both Leviathan and Ashura arrive, greeting Rydia and saying that they figured that since Rydia wasn't able to make it into the Feymarch last time she tried, it was their turn to pay her a visit.(from ff wiki).
Edge sees Rydia, and promptly tries to run away, not wishing Rydia to see him, but Cuore spots him, and drags him over.
Asura reveals that it was Edge who invited them. Rydia is shocked, but says, in her heart, "thank you ... Edge!" It seemed that Rydia sorta finally accepted him(but not directly/straightforward).

10)Oh yeah, recently someone posted something at a forum, I'm just copying and pasting it.

On the mobile board, the question as to which pairings were official in this game came up. The answer was that they were Cecil/Rosa (no spoiler there ), Edge/Rydia, and Palom/Leonora. It was also mentioned that Edge/Rydia might be low key though, so it's hard to know how far they go with it and whether they'll keep it consistent in the translation. They are pictured standing next to one another in a number of screenshots (and some later official art for one of the chapters, but I'm not sure that means anything) that I've seen and they have two band techniques (one story driven and one not).

I didn't like it. Rydia and Edge. Edge is 26, and Rydia is about 17 ? not to mention Edge always seemed rather flirtatious and he wasn't afraid to hit on Rosa and Rydia almost at the same time.

Basically I'm a weirdo who likes Rydia x Kain
:britt:

Edge is awesome character and is great in comic relief and he is a powerhouse in battle, but in relationships ... I'm really iffy and really unsure because of his playboy like behavior...

If they do end up together, it would be cute because sure that SE would make them really right for each other, but inside still don't really enjoy the Rydia x Edge relationship that much..

Actually speaking, Rydia is 20, a year older than Rosa (weird, I know). Edge was flirtatious, but in After Years, he matured and after 17 years he still has strong feelings for Rydia, to the extent he never married anyone else for the Eblan throne to continue. He also hit on Rosa about once or twice and never bothered her after that (though I admit I didn't like that he did).
The main point is, he is a changed person (though he retains his personality), and is a responsible king now, too. Based on that list I have posted previously, it shows how much exactly Edge would do for Rydia and how far he would go for her.

Aww, you're not a weirdo. You're just into that pairing, though honestly speaking, I can't see that relationship ever happening, given the moments/evidence pointing out towards Edge and Rydia. It was still pretty low key in the After Years, though. About Kain, I think he was still having feelings for Rosa in the After Years.

Rydia is 20 ? 0_o She looks so short. Then again can't say much because is 21 and has the height of a 14 year old. But nevermind >->

The thing is, is sweet that Edge thinks of Rydia alot but don't really see a connection between the two. And don't want to sound mean, but think Square added hints towards Edge and Rydia because the Edge and Rydia fanbase is so strong among the fans and think Square wanted to support something that was so strong within Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy IV Fans..

So when After Years was created they did anything possible to make the Edge and Rydia relationship more true for its fans and supporters, but before that in the original game (FFIV snes ) the relationship seemed too one sided and don't think the snes had the graphics to see whether Rydia was blushing or trying to hide her feelings whenever Edge was looping around her and trying to be her man. But on the FFIV DS version, Rydia just seemed shocked about Edges flirting and it looks like she has no idea what's going on. And Edge gets told off before Rydia can work anything out. Isn't calling Rydia dumb here, no think that she is quite intelligent but don't think during the original game she knows or understands what love is..

Think Edges case during the After Years is that "absence makes the heart grow fonder " and because he had past feelings for Rydia and he hasn't seen her in years his love for her has grown to almost steel. And think that Rydia is slowly able to work out any mature feelings because Edge is so keen and willing to do anything, even build a giant city to be with her. But he seems a little desperate, and it just seems like it's more addictive feelings for her rather than wanting to be her man..

Though like the idea in After Years how he seems quite the flirt, though seventeen years. No Girlfriend, no wife and he still thinks about her and it's 17 years..
It sounds like he is so keen for her that she has already booked a placing in his heart and has already said no to moving on or dating anybody else and Rydia is the one for him. That would take skills, epsically for Edge if there is any pretty women around the castle..
:hmmm:

Like Kain and Rydia together because feel sorry for Kain and believe that he needs to be loved. :sadpanda:

Edge has the skills to pick up any babe he wants, but Kain has been through so much heartbreak and he really felt sorry for Rydia when Cecil wanted Rydia and Rosa to leave the airship, it looked like on the DS that he wanted Rydia and Rosa to have a chance to fight Zeromus while Edge was rude towards Rydia's feelings and like " Yeah, you can't fight as good as us men ! " type of attitude. Don't know, Kain needs love and the female twin would make him a pedophile and Rosa is already taken. And it seems like Kain would do anything for Rosa and be her knight kind of like Squall was to Rinoa if jealously didn't poison his mind. Just feel like Kain would make a good boyfriend and towards Rydia, epsically if he stays away from the jealously revenge plans and mean wearing light blue amour with black magic powers.. xD
