Yes, Dragon’s Crown Is A Vanillaware Game And Ignition Are Publishing It

Yesterday, we ran a video montage of upcoming PlayStation Vita games, amongst which was one game titled Dragon’s Crown. It looked very much like a game developed by Muramasa: The Demon Blade developer, Vanillaware. It turns out, it is.

Siliconera can confirm that Dragon’s Crown is a new game for the PSVita and PlayStation 3, and will be published by Ignition Entertainment. The game is currently slated for a spring 2012 release. You’ll be treated to a trailer of the title later today.

Update#1

Dragon’s Crown Is A 4-Player Co-Op Game By Vanillaware [Update]

Ignition Entertainment are publishing Vanillaware’s next game, Dragon Crown, on the PlayStation 3 and PSVita. Both versions of the game will interact with each other in some way, Ignition revealed today, but they didn’t go into the specifics of how.

Dragon’s Crown is a 4-player online cooperative game, although you can play it by yourself, too. The game will have six different character classes, each of which you can customize. Here’s a look at some character artwork. Ignition say “six classes,” but there are eight characters here.

Wizard: Sorcerer:

Fighter: Elf:

Dwarf: Amazon:

Knight: Thief:

Ignition say Dragon’s Crown will have a “nearly endless online adventure”. Your mission in the game is to discover the secret behind some sort of ancient dragon threatening the world. You’ll have to delve into dungeons, find treasure, and strengthen your character.

Ignition have Dragon’s Crown planned for a 2012 release.

Update: Added character artwork.

Fantastic. Love Vanillaware, love their art style and I'm really looking forward to their two new projects. I could care less about the PS Vita version and I'm pleased to see it coming out for the PS3 as well, and that they're not just developing for Sony handhelds. The one thing that did make me groan though, is the fact that Ignition is behind the publishing, and I'm hardly a fan of them because Ignition often does a half-ass job with their localisations. :mokken:

Ohhh sounds intresting!
It's for the Vita huh, hmmm I wonder will the Vita be able to play PSP games or not though.

Back on subject.

It looks like a scroll across the game, kinda like a new Golden Axe or something, but thats ok if it is fun I will get it.

From Dengeki's photo report on Ignition's E3 booth:

They practically grabbed the whole Dragon's Crown trailer in still shots, so visit Dengeki for more shorts simulating what it will be like to have HD Vanillaware running on a Vita.

I'm not sure if the trailer that's being shown in the booth is any different from the one that was shared earlier at the game's official site aside form the Vita system framing the footage. You can see the official site version in this story.

Dengeki also managed to speak with Ignition's Kashow Oda about the game. Oda is serving as producer. He's the guy with the gigantic tie in Dengeki's pics.

Oda explained briefly how Ignition got to put its publishing label on Vanilaware's latest. It all began three years ago, he explained. Ignition's CEO in England was a huge Vanillaware fan, and he wanted to work with Vanillaware's George Kamitani, director of Dragon's Crown.

Oda didn't say who approached who, but Kamitani seemed to suggest in a recent Famitsu interview that Vanillaware was shopping the game around for a publisher.

Your Character’s Reanimated Corpse Can Appear In Another Dragon’s Crown Game

In Dragon’s Crown, a Vanillaware developed beat ‘em up from Ignition, has a character sharing system. The warrior you create and customize can appear in another player’s game in at least two ways.

"You can give character data to a friend and even if you’re not there they can use your character in the game," Kashow Oda, Producer, explained to Siliconera in an interview. Dragon’s Crown also has a clever system where your character, more specifically its corpse, can spread virally.

"When you play Dragon’s Crown online, fallen characters leave corpses on the map. The body collection system allows players to collect these corpses from the battlefield and bring them back to town," Oda announced. "Pay a fee and you can revive these characters and use them inside your game. In a single player game, revived characters are computer-controlled NPCs and if you’re stuck you can select a more powerful character to assist you."

Now, that’s interesting. I suppose the body collection system has natural balance since weak characters will spread more often than strong ones… since powerful characters won’t die as often. However, there is an opening for an altruistic player will sacrifice their character to help newbies. Ignition also introduced a reward for dying – fame. Die a lot and you’ll be a popular Dragon’s Crown hero.

I asked Oda how many NPCs you can have in one single player party. "Right now, that’s still being decided," he answered.

Dragon’s Crown is slated for a spring launch of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Amazon sends out pre-order cancellation notices for Vanillaware RPG Dragon’s Crown

NeoGAF users are reporting Amazon has cancelled pre-orders for Vanillaware’s PS Vita-PS3 crossover, action-RPG Dragon’s Crown, which is to be published by Ignition. We had a look over on Amazon, and sure enough, the game is no longer listed as far as we can tell – however, GAF notes it’s a bit hard to find on the site. The game is still listed for sale on Amazon Canada, so hopefully it’s just some sort of burp in the US system. It’s possible, as things like this have happened before, most recently with GameStop’s Last Guardian gaff. We’ll send a mail just in case.
