Dora the Explorer an illegal immigrant?

I really do not know if this belongs in this section because I found the article to be more amusing than anything.

Basically they are questioning whether or not Dora the Explorer is an illegal immigrant.

"Dora is kind of like a blank screen onto which people can project their thoughts and feelings about Latinos," said Erynn Masi de Casanova, a sociology professor at the University of Cincinnati. "They feel like they can say negative things because she's only a cartoon character."

"But since the passage of the Arizona law — which requires authorities to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally — Dora's life and immigration status have been scrutinized and mocked."

"Representatives from Nickelodeon declined to comment on Dora's background, and her place of birth or citizenship have never been clear." She has brown skin, dark hair and some experts who have studied the show say she speaks Spanish with an American accent"

I think it's a little silly to question a cartoon character's immigration status. And i don't hate her because she is Mexican, I hate her because when I baby sit my niece I get to her: "Forest, river, volcano! Forest, river, volcano! Forest, river, volcano!" And I hate shows that ask kids to talk to the TV <.<

I can't believe people have nothing better to do than question the immigration status of a cartoon character. Honestly, what do they want? Do they want Nickelodeon to produce her birth records and legal papers? Who's next? Optimus Prime?

I understand they're trying to make a point about Arizona's new laws and how they disagree with them but leave the cartoon characters out of it. Let the children enjoy their tv programs no matter how annoying they may be. >.>

Really? Everyone has to hate something. Even if it's a cartoon character on an immensly annoying cartoon for 4-7 year olds. Why would they care where a CARTOON CHARACTER lives?! It's not real, it doesn't matter.

Wich dosent take away the fact Dora in indeed a CARTOON and real life and laws shouldnt be based on such.

For the first part - fair enough. If someone is suspected to have crossed the border illegally, I see no real wrong in investigating that particular person. But to question and scrutinise a young children's cartoon character is stepping into the realms of lunacy here. Dora isn't real. Cartoons aren't real. Cartoons can have the earth turned into a giant Christmas pudding if they want. The contents are not real. Therefore bringing the cartoon as an object of debate in a real world matter is ludicrous.

Other bits in the article really made me shake my head in disbelief as well:

In the late 1990s, Tinky Winky the Teletubby, a purple children's TV character with a triangle antenna — was called out by Christian leaders for being gay.

The clever people behind this one in the 1990s must have forgotten that toddlers are the ones who watch the show. And yes, toddlers are so going to get that message, aren't they?

As far as I am concerned, I fear that the rest of the Southwest, and maybe even the rest of America could follow down the same path as Arizona...then again, I'm a little to left wing for that kind of fear....

Actually in ROTF they get into a bit of an argument over just what the Autobots are doing on Earth and what their limits in terms of action should be.

Anyway, good to see that they at least remember the debacle that was "Tinky Winky is gay!" The worry with this fixation over Dora now though, is that in some cases Tinky Winky is still thought of as "the gay teletubby".

So as long as we're questioning the immigration status of cartoon characters, who thinks we need to take a look at that "Superman" guy? He's been around for quite a while and he's still pulling that damn "last son of Krypton" routine...
