When you say that game comparison i know nothing of the game you showed

When I say I hate FFIX character designs I just hated the way they looked to chibi like and to be quite honest they didn't really appeal to me

Well i haven't played Dragon Quest VII either, but i saw it in the store today and went "WTFMIDGETS"

To me it's alot more chibi than what you see in FF9.

I thought the character designs were great. They fit the game perfectly IMO. I really don't get the complaints about the characters being chibi or looking like midgets. I really never noticed it until I read other people's complaints.

See? It looks like 2/3 of their body is just legs.

That's actually very proportional... If everyone wore their pants up high. They really messed up on Seifer's model, though. His arms are much shorter than Squall's or Irvine's arms.

And I think IX is an alright game, but I really hate being midget people... xD

Hmm...yeah actually it is the pants...why are they wearing their pants up to their chest like old people? o_O

Meh, anyway, IX looks fine. End of story xD

I honestly can't see how they're midgets :\ I've played through the game numerous times, and I haven't even considered that they might not even be proportional. I've been playing the game since I was 10, and I still fail to see how they're all chibi-like.

:\

I guess I just like a game for what it is, rather than for what it isn't.

glad it helped. ^_^

Cerridwen, now this'd make people appreciate FF9's graphics better. lol that's what we call deformed isn't it.

Of course it does!

People bash the characters because they are chibi. It's fine to be entitled to your opinion and not like the characters because the way they look. It still doesn't mean you should hate the game its self and character personalities.

What, you expect people to not hate the game for that? Remember, today's gamers are shallow, they could care less about story. Most newer generation FF fans are ones raised on either VII and VIII or X, so they think those games are the pinnacle of fine storytelling and that Cloud and Squall and Auron are the epitome of deep, multifaceted characters.

then I guess I was so fortunate for starting the series with IX. I really loved this game that even when I played VIII and then VII it didn't appealed to me as good as IX did. that's when I only noticed them being deformed when I played FFVIII.

In a way I did like the fact that the characters graphically went back to the original games, but I feel like it went a little too far. The SD characters might have been good for the overworld map or for battle, but for cutscenes and the FMVs, realistic proportions would have been more suitable.

I don't think the designs were bad at all. Final Fantasy!

Having slightly deformed characters adds to the charm. It shows the lack of realism. I don't play a Fantasy game to discover a realistic story, with realistic characters who lead realistic lives. I play them to discover a new world, stories that could never happen in this world, and characters that could never be doubles of someone who exists.

I'd also say that the designs were more of an anime style, for which Japan is known. Since it's a Japanese game, I see nothing wrong with it. C'mon! Does no one else wonder why none of the Final Fantasy games, which are made in Japan, have Japanese characters!?

Yeah, it is a fantasy story, but there's a difference between fantasy and goofy. The SD styling can undermine the seriousness of the story for some people.

aren't Yuffie, Yuna and Tidus japanese?

I agree with you on the deformed adding charm to the fantasy setting of this game well but personally whether deformed or normal is either good. normal sized characters could make you feel the fantasy more IF designed well to fit the fantasy setting.

Yuna and Tidus don't look Japanese though. :P Japanese usually have ink-black hair and pale skin. The closest person to that would be Rinoa... Yeah, I'd say Rinoa was the most Japanese of all.

Tidus's face is pretty Japanese, Yuna is probably mixed.

I agree with you on your previous post, though. I don't play a fantasy RPG to see a story about a realistic world with realistic people. It's just like a fairy tale, only in video game form. And i still say this:

Is more deformed and midgety than IX.

Ugh, deformed is by far the wrong word to use here. I loved the way they were different from other games. If they all looked like FFVII characters...or FFVIII characters, that would have sucked big-time. Originality, difference, and uniqueness. Add a new ingredient to the mix at times to spice things up and keep the fans guessing.

yes they somewhat do look like. they're names are of japanese origin and they're hair and clothes as well.:P FFX is asian style and there are many asian-inspired characters there so you could be wrong in saying there are no japanese characters in FF.

but with Rinoa though she REALLY look like one, Nomura said she designed her as a European girl. but even her first name is very japanese. hard to believe no?

hmm don't you think the kid appear normal just because he's more closed up than the two? I've played this game some years ago and I'd say FFT's graphics is better.

well midget is even wrong isn't it? anyway I agree with you on originality, uniqueness.. but VIII and VII has it too though not as much as IX..

Nah, the kid has a roundish, typical looking kid's face. The girl in the middle would look like an infant only the hair and facial expression give her the appearance of a pissed off mother. The guy on the right just has a face that's too rigid and angled to be a kid.

And are you serious, Tactics had better graphics? Ouch >_<

Haha, yes midget it the wrong word as well, the characters come nothing close to that. Originality and uniqueness are great ^_^ I wouldn't want all my FFs looking the same, it would become monotonous after a while.

LOL okay let's compare:

both are good. DW has a nice 3D environment. in terms of sprite well don't you think they have the same style? my preference would be FFT's. It's more colorful and cute and I like Akihiko Yoshida's style. ^_^ btw is DWVII your favorite? It's the only DW I have but I never had a good time to play it well. actually I was thinking of playing one DW game long just to see.

anyway on topic:
about the uniqueness of IX, what's amusing is when you think of VIII's normal sized characters and then square went on to the "deformed" style while making them more solid and texturized isn't it? you know.. they could have continued VIII's trend but they chose not to and it turned out great.
