So, on the internet we hear the word "overrated" a lot, in movies and games... Yet when I hear this word, it almost makes me laugh. Seems like when people use the word "overrated" they really mean that they didn't like the game. I have done this before I admit, but I correct myself later and just say "hey I didn't like the game."

How do you feel about the word "overrated" on gaming? Do you use the word when you don't like a game? how about for games you have really liked?

For me the word "overrated" should be define as "when something gets a lot of hype from both fans and critics, and doesn't live up to that hype."

Really I think that the word almost shouldn't be used anymore, because people usually only look at the games they hate or the games they didn't like the most out of a series or a genre and say those games are "overrated." What happen to just not liking a game?

I have used the word for both games I hated and games I have loved, and I feel that sometimes I use it more than I should.

Overrated is thrown about a bit too much. It annoys me when someone calls something obscure and unknown overrated; when in fact they mean to call it shit.

Example of over-rated would be your typical Pop musician as apposed to an artist which is equally shit, but unknown.

Whenever I've ever used the term 'overrated' is when I start disliking something because I get fed up of seeing or hearing about it everywhere. This has mostly applied to things that I have originally liked. It's like that saying "Too much of a good thing will make it a bad thing", or something like that.

On the other hand, I do think that a lot of people use the term just because they think it makes them look cool by not going with conformity. :mokken:

[FONT=Batang, serif]There's very few games I've ever called overrated. In fact, I can only think of one game I've ever called that. There's a lot of games I don't like, but unless they are widely acclaimed then they're not what I'd call overrated. FFXIII for example, I've seen a fair few people say it's overrated, but I wouldn't say it is. The only people who really rate XIII highly are Square themselves, which doesn't count in my opinion. I think a game is overrated when the fan base starts attributing qualities to it that simply don't hold up in reality. For example if people were to praise Dragon Age: Origins for having a highly unique storyline and setting (the storyline and setting of Dragon Age: Origins is for all intents and purposes very standard fantasy fare) it would be fair to say that the storyline of Dragon Age: Origins is overrated. It has to be something other than entertainment value though. It must be something tangible you can actually benchmark against other games.
