So I've always wondered about this and couldn't find a topic about it. Is there a reason behind why some characters in FF games have colored hair? When I mean colored I mean the extremes like Lightning's Strawberry Pink, Rydia with Green hair, Yeul's blue, Caius' Purple hair, and so on and so forth.

Don't get me wrong I actually love it a lot, finally a game series willing to use different hair colors. I was wondering if there was any significance behind characters having 'natural' dyed hair colors which in our world obviously are not 'natural' hair colors. I would find it hard to believe they are just dyeing their hair that color. Especially characters like Yeul who wouldn't care or be able to do such a thing.

These types of unrealistic hair colors are not unique to the Final Fantasy games. Indeed, they are prevalent in anime as well. While this is not always the case (there will of course be exceptions), most of the time these extravagant hues are symbolic of a character's personality and fate. I don't personally know all the symbolism off the top of my head, but I do know of some guides that have taken the time to analyze what each color means:

You'll notice that in the first link, the description for pink is: "the promise of life and tinged with the potential for order and great accomplishments. It’s a reminder that there’s always a chance for something new, and potentially better." In the second link, characters with pink hair "can have a great destiny." This description fits Lightning perfectly. She took her fate into her own hands in the first game, and was able to remake the world and save all her friends in the third game. Lightning did accomplish great things and ensured a better tomorrow for the world.

I don't think there's any profound reason other than 1) anime's cool! 2) hey, our game is basically Anime: the JRPG...sorta.

EDIT: Oh well, maybe there's a bit more to it, but I'm not much of a connoisseur of anime.

I never thought about it from the anime perspective, that makes a lot more sense now and correlation of why they would do it. The symbolism is cool too. I like it when every detail about a character (even their hair color) is a part about them or tells a story of the type of character they are. When I play games like Skyrim on PC I sometimes spend a good hour or two in character creation mode ... and I have lots of mods that add many fun features like new hairstyles, color choices, and all that. I spend gobs of time thinking about the character I make and why he or she would have that particular hair color, eye color, and all that.

I never have payed attention to the anime connection either but I love all of the colored hair in the games, it helps make the characters we love even more unique.

More variation I suppose as well. It says a lot about the world they're from too. Like in FFX and FFXII there are no exotic hair colours, which kind of gives the impression of a more natural world I guess. Hair colour is just another aspect of character design, and every part of characters are considered when they're being designed and how colours and sizes and clothing all gives a certain impression about the character and how the designers want people to see the character, whether they want them to contrast with the initial impression or not.

Lol, I don't think anyone would consider Seymour's hair indicative of a "more natural world" in terms of the types of hair colors and styles we perceive as natural in our world.

Speaking of FFX however, what is fun to note about Tidus's hair is that it was originally supposed to be black, but it was later changed to brown and then finally blond. It seems he actually dyes his hair from brown to blond. If you look at his roots, they're rather dark.

Seymour isn't human. That's like saying that Kimahri's hair colour isn't natural lol

I have my suspicions with Tidus cause when he was a kid he had brown hair. I don't know whether he dyes it or whether his hair lightened as he grew older as some people's does. I never noticed his roots bein darker other than shadowing but it's certainly a possibility that he dyes it.
