It's funny, I always thought that all the final fantasies were based in the same world but just thousands of years apart from each other. I think I heard someone else talking about how they are actually different universes somewhere. Does anyone know for sure which one it really is? I don't have too many of the games under my belt so I could be very wrong, but I figure that they gotta have some connection because of what I've seen in X-2 and XII both relating back to VII. In X-2 just at the end you can hear shinra get the start of his idea for the mako reactors found in VII (If you talk to him after going down into the farplane he will talk about it). In XII I saw a bit of a hint back towards VII through the bits of information you get if you kill enough of a certain monster. I forget the name but theres a skeleton kinda thing in the Barheim passage that in the extra information mentions the ancients and the need to learn from them. So uh...yeah what do you guys think?

The separate games are each based in completely different places, only exception is FFX-2. There are a lot of similarities between them with regards to monsters and summons but that's because they're made by the same company so they would recycle a lot of their content.

I like to think the monsters and summons are tributes to the ongoing work of Final Fantasy, not the link between games in the sense of them being on the same world.

I think the names of the worlds stand out though. Also the history of which. Spira can document a history for up to one thousand years ago... what of the others? Gaia was apparently formed 5000 years before the story of FFIX. Would they not have information pertaining to the rise and fall of Sin; a major even in any time?

Highly unlikely that they're all just... one world.

I don't believe all the games exist in the same timeline and on the same world.

However, a few of the games do make reference to previous games in the series.
Just off the top of my head ...

FFIII mentions the Light warriors from the first game.

FFVIII saw the return of Gilgamesh from FFV

The Ancients are mentioned in a couple of games FFIII, FFV and FFVII (Maybe more, I can't remember).

Many of the games are set on Earth and I used to think that they were set on parallel worlds connected by the Void or Cleft of Dimensions from FFIII and FFV.

I'm playing through the entire series again so if I spot any more links between games I'll post 'em.

Just for the sake of it:

In IX, Zidane identifies a sword which he recalls a "guy with spikey hair" used. Referring to Cloud, due to the style of the sword.
It's in the weapon shop in Lindblum on the far wall. I always tend to look at it for some reason. >.>

I may be wrong, but I remember that in FFIX that Freya can use Kain's lance (I'm guessing its Kain from FFIV) that could directly link those two final fantasys. I don't think that they take place on the same world. One reason is that the worlds have different names.

FFVII: the planet (they never actuall give it a name)
FFIX: Gaia
FFX: Spira
FFXII: Ivilliace (though that's only part of the world)

I don't remember any of the other games actually metioning the name of the planet they are on

No, no games are related at all, except of course the comp. of FFVII and FFX & FFX-2. There are referneces to other games throughout the series, with IX being the biggest culprit. In that one, we see Zidane mention "Some guy with spikey hair" which is Cloud. Also, Freya's ultimate weapon is Kain's Lance (Kain being the Dragon Knight from FFIV) There's also the return of Garland, who is from FFI or FFII I believe. Many people believe that this was sort of a 'send off' to the series before it was moved to the PS2

No game has ever been set on Earth though. From FFI-V, we aren't given any names for the planet. In VI, the two different world are the World of Balance, and the World of Ruin. The world in FFVII was Gaia, as was the world in FFIX. No name was given in FFVIII as far as I'm aware. FFX was set in Spira, while XII is in Ivalice
So yes, the series is frought with references to other games, but no games have been related thus far

Yeah. like previously said no FF world is linked at all to anyothers except for X & X-2, aswell as the compilation of FFVII ofcourse. The references are there but thats all they are, mostly to give us people who've played majority of the seires a brief 'oww cool' moment.

Gilgemesh is supposed to be a recurring character to himself, meaning each time he makes an appearence in the seires he's infact the same one. However his timeline is rather muddled and isn't canon so shouldn't really e seen as a real link.

Are you sure FFVII isn't set on Earth?
It's been a while, but during the final battle with Sephiroth when he summons Meteor doesn't it destroy half of our solar system and then the solar flare hits Earth? (Where I believe the story takes place) I'm sure the planets are named as it passes them.

i think you mean Supernova.

and the only FFs that are related are X and X-2 - all of the FFVII compilation and theres supposedly a very fain link between X and VII - something to do with Shinra.

And gilgamesh can be attributed to being in every game -(after V) because he fell into the dimensional void ^_^

Supernova!!! Yes! Thanks, I'd forgotten ... like I said, been a while since I played it. :)

I'm currently playing FFV and just arrived on Galuf's homeworld ... I wonder if that's Earth too ... Just joking!!! :P
