I'm a huge fan of Celtic music, even though I haven't actually listened to that many. So hence, the thread. Does anyone know of any soothing Celtic songs? I'd love to hear what anyone recommends. I'm sure there's some Celtic music fans here, yes?

Sandy Denny (probably most famous for appearing on Led Zeppelin's Battle for Evermore) had a truly magical voice and did some decent albums. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3OWOCwvjHU

There's also The Pogues of course. They aren't really of the "soothing" persuasion (most of the time anyway) but they are pretty much my favourite band when I'm drunk, so I'll recommend them anyway!

When I was younger I bought one of those sounds of the seasons type albums at a gift shop at the beach.. It was called Celtic Awakening... I had it on cassette tape and i loved it. I lost the tape long ago, but I just found the CD online recently... There was a certain track in particular which I loved. It was called Feast at Tintern... It wasn't on Youtube so I've uploaded it so I can share it with you.

I'd highly recommend these guys:

-Maire ("Moya") Brennan, particularly her album "Two Horizons". She's Enya's sister and it shows--I actually kind of like Maire even better :) She's done a ton of stuff, I haven't heard all of it, but this album has a nice new-age Celtic feel to it.

-The Celtic Woman albums--especially the songs done by Orla Fallon, she's an amazing singer, and she's done some solo stuff too. Some of the Celtic Woman songs don't sound as Celtic as others, but hers usually do, lots of Gaelic/traditional lyrics.

-The Celtic Circle--this is a great 2-CD compilation with lots of Celtic artists I hadn't heard of before I got it. Among other things, it contains a version of "She Moved Thru The Fair" by Anuna that is THE BEST I have ever heard anywhere--it's just amazing :awesome:

-Kathleen Finnegan--she's got some beautiful harp music--she actually played at my wedding, she does a lot of traditional Celtic stuff. I don't think she's very well-known, so it might be hard to find her music online, but she's on the website ReverbNation--you might be able to listen to some of her stuff there :)

Hope this helps! :D

Thanks you guys! I'll look these up on youtube and see if I can download a few songs soon. =] I don't know what it is about Celtic that puts me at ease on a very stressful day.

Celtic music is so soothing. I'm a huge fan of Enya, which I'm sure I've mentioned before. xD I'll have to check out Maire Brennan. I haven't heard any of her songs yet. I also recommend Loreena McKennitt, Mits. She has some great songs and while not all of them have the Celtic sound, they're still relaxing. Some of her best ones are The Mummer's Dance, The Highwayman (this one's kind of depressing), Skellig, Marrakesh Market Night and The Mystic's Dream.

I'm quite fond of some folk music, but I'm not really good at distinguising the differnent sub-genres. Of course everyone knowns Enya, so I'm not going to recommend her. I'll just recommend some artists I like, maybe they're not really Celtic, but you may like them anyways :)

Omnia, they call theirt music 'neocelt', but it also has a bit of the medieval folk sound:

Rapalje (old Dutch for scum ;-) ), probably more Irish/Scottish, but it's roots are from the same corner of the world:

Faun, a German band who plays medieval folk music, some of it based on music from older European tribes and people

And finally there's Loreena McKennitt. I don't know much of her songs, but she's is probably the most 'Celtic' of these artists. But the previous poster obviously knows her work better, so go with her recommendations. :)
