Lightning Returns Buying Lightning Returns? XD

No, I didn't see any previews before playing. Only a few ads at the Tokyo Game show. I knew I was buying it as soon as I heard the announcement because I enjoyed 1 and 2 so much.

Lots of hate going on in this forum for a game most haven't played yet. I try to have a positive outlook on things. To each their own.

Most people in these forums who are refusing to buy it have already played XIII and XIII-2 and dislike the games, and/ or dislike Lightning.

Buying a game that's apart of a series that you despise and/ or a main character that you despise wouldn't make sense, at all.

Yes to each their own. i always felt like one of VERY few people who enjoyed 13 and 13-2. i think theyre great games, but lots of hate going towards them, dunno why, but there is.
Anyways im def gonna be buying it at midnight if they have a midnight launch :D

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who likes the series around here. :) If you liked 1 and 2, you'll like 3. Just be forewarned that it is extremely frustrating in the beginning until you get used to the new system.

I wont exactly be getting it at a midnight launch as its impossible where I live and as I am learning to drive now it wont help haha. So I will pick it up on the day and I am looking forward to it :)

you know why. you all know why....and this has to do with longer fans. if you played FF from roughly FF7-ff10. you should already get the feel of true character development. granted ff13-2 did a good job with the character "development" department. but each time, the people inevitably asked more and more questions. and if you're new to Ff and you feel like you have to ask alot of questions from the start to get a good grasp, it already fails.

SO lets not say "i dunno why". yeah you do. you just don't agree.

to each their own, buy it if you feel you want it that much. but to me, i'll be renting it for a fair review. I've given 13 a chance, I've given 13-2 a chance. and all through me away. i dont know why anyone would give this a chance, even if you were a fan. but i'll give it a chance nonetheless and give a fair review. overall, it doesn't look difficult at all, as Ty Hope constantly says.

the gameplay looks straightforward, they removed the system that made it so that we wouldn't be pressing the same button all the time.

I won't be getting it at midnight where I am, either. It'll be waiting for me in the freezing cold when I get back home from work that day. :lew:

I won't get much of a chance to play it until the following weekend, though. But that's just fine.

My wording may have been off. The battle system isn't difficult at all. It's the time management that people in Japan initially got frustrated with. It is more of an action/RPG and there is an actual "game over" if you run out of time. The battle system is amazing. Very face paced and exciting. Shouldn't take long to get used to. It's the maps and time system that need a few hours. At least from personal experience.

As far as "character development" and story go, they either grab you or they don't. Many hated the first Lord of the Rings movie. Others thought it was the best of the three. With FF, many loved 8. I couldn't stand it. It's all about what grabs you and pulls you in. The 13 series did that for me starting back with the first one. 12 is another I played through and didn't like at all. 5 years have passed and I don't remember much about it all. I didn't connect with it. 13 on the other hand, I did connect with. Lightning Returns wrapped up a wonderful story for me.

you're describing it as if it depended on the ff. despite much, ff7 and 8 didn't age well enough to convey the proper story telling, so obviously 13 did was make a story to suit the graphics, either way, only a few are loved. and SE continues to push lightning. i could forgive the 13 series, if she died....we had nothing to do with her.

One thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the voice acting. I played all three 13 games in Japanese and have never heard the English voices. Voice actors add a LOT to characters in my opinion. I for one, love the Lightning character. Her voice in Japanese was awesome. Maybe how she was portrayed in English turned some off? Just a posibility.

One example is that people here seem to say that Vanille's voice was annoying. I went and checked out the English voice on youtube and actually agree. In Japanese though, she sounds fine.

Back to what I said about "connecting" to stories, this also holds true for individual characters.

If you disliked the 13 series that much, I can't recommend this game to you. For those who did though, give it a shot! It really is a fun game. Very different from the others, but FUN!

Lightning's voice made her seem like a somewhat butch, emotionless woman who had no sense of humour. :lew: Having said that, I loved Final Fantasy XIII-2, and enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII. Sahz, Serah, Snow, Fang and Vanille made Final Fantasy XIII enjoyable for me; I didn't worry too much about the character whose shoes I had to walk in. I absolutely loved Final Fantasy XIII-2. Serah, Noel, Caius, Yeul and Hope were an excellent cast, and I am looking forward to seeing how their story develops (I know a bit about it, but I want to experience it in detail). I can, however, understand why people dislike this game. I wouldn't put it alongside Final Fantasy IV to X; it doesn't FEEL the same. I think the past games relied on more charm, character development, additional story arcs, mini games, and exploration. I also prefer the battle systems in the earlier games. Although Final Fantasy XIII-2 was an improvement on XIII, neither game required much strategy. Of course, some will prefer the battle system in XIII and XIII-2; when I was 15, I HATED the turn-based, strategic gameplay in FFs VII, VIII, IX and X!

It does look FUn, but however, theres a lacking in story. and i dont think even 13 fans can deny that 13 has several clear issues with the way they set up the story. and as you play through the trilogy, the trilogy actually betrays the fans. (unless you never cared about the raw specifics, you took it like wind, and ignored it all. the emotion was that mattered).

And i think for RPG story values just as much as gameplay. and the missions. I've looked them over, they really don't feel all that great. They look as tedious as the Crisis Core missions. I've seen a play through, and guides. the missions are just boring. they could've done more with that.

Vanille's voice wasn't the only problem, it was her whole personality and how she conveyed everything. On paper, Vanille sounds good. A character who actually has a lot of hidden relevancy to the plot. But....when you see it executed, that ditsy character. She's no different from Selphie or Yuffie from FF8 and 7, childish (even though she's older than Hope), but worst of all, she just comes off as fake...both in the Japanese and the original English. and for a game that strived for realism, the characters really did nothing better than previous FF games.

Vanille = Selphie/Yuffie. Snow = Irvene, Sahz = Baret, Fang = Vincent, Lightning and = Cloud/Leon with every now and then some loud outburst, like a typical spoiled teenager. But its done so much worst....because these character archetypes exist, they didn't try to mix it up and make them feel liek "wow....these characters are so unique". you dont get that feeling, yes, visually, they look amazing, and iconic, but personality...they did nothing to mix it up. Snow constantly acts like a big shot, but doesn't change throughout the story. VAnille, although reveals her past, still is the typical ditsy character. Her accent may play on more hate towards her, but accent aside, her character as a whole is annoying.

the only good one that was also completely original was Hope....despite being incredibly pessimistic...(and had enough reason and background to be as such) ended up being more developed than Lightning in FF13. Which was such a shame that he's constantly put in the sidelines.

But like i said, and this is something you've been ignoring. FF13 trilogy, hates its own fans. it does everything to make sure previous games feel like a nuisance. YOu can't play through ff13-2 without either hating it, or wondering why FF13 even got that ending in the first place. And the same goes for Lightning Returns, but again not only for FF13-2, but FF13 again. It makes you think back, and say "what did they really accomplish". analyze the entire series just by the endings and the goals, and you line it up with LR's.

it could be hit or miss even within FF13 fans.

The cast is as selfish as ever. and this story just doesn't broaden enough. I can't recommend this game, not even to the FF13 fan, unless you loved it blindly both games and never saw a single flaw in it.

I think voice acting is very important to a video game, but i also think Lightnings voice actor did a great job. Shes a hero, and has to be the tough sister/sister-in-law/hero/decision maker. Therefore i believe that her sounding kinda "butch" or talking as though her opinion is more important than anyone else' fits great for her.
and razberry, i played all ff7-13-2. Theyre all great in thir own ways, i didnt get much into 8 or 12 to be honest tho, just enough for me to tell that i wasnt gonna be grasped into it like i was for X or 7. But then again im now older and more open minded than i was then 8 came out as well as 12, so maybe ill play them again one day, maybe. But as of now, they just didnt grab my attention like 13 or 13-2 did. But like stated earlier, to each their own & we will continue to debate for/against the 13 series for some more time im sure ;)

So the 13 series hates me as an FF fan? Hmm, for something that "hates me" I sure enjoyed the hell out of it :) FF has always been experimenting with new systems, ideas, stories, etc. Some work, some don't. Some agree, some don't. That's the beauty of it. And I can assure you I don't "blindly love" the game. I just enjoyed it and liked the characters. The story is brought up a lot... It's cool if people weren't into it. I thought the story rocked. 13-2 was depressing at the end, but it made sense. And 13-3 takes off right from Lightning coming out of her crystal state.

No sense in arguing this anymore.

no, you're only bringing up the emotion. but in the end, they succeed in ways that really feels like failures. in 13, they won, no bitter-sweet other than Fang and Vanille protecting Pulse now. lightning and Snow get their precious Serah

But 13-2 had a complete 180. not only does it does the dumbest thing ever (change the ending of 13), but altogether when it camed to the ending, everything that was established in 13, was demolished, and a rather rushed way...but also...it ends with LIghtning coming back, and a new world right?

Ok...lets move on with Lightning Returns so far...we know that Bhunivelze brings her back and yatta yatta. but the ending...lets look at the ending
So we know now that Serah was saved through Lumina, the child personality that Lightning discarded in her early life, and in the end, defeating Bhunivelze....doesn't really do much other than still following the selfish desires. If XIII-2 showed anything, it showed sacrifice, and that sometimes you have to give up the ones you love in order to see the bigger picture.

Many FF's were like that, top of my head, FF7, FF10. Here its like the perfect ending, the entire cast is saved even all the alternate yuels. but then suddenly takes the turn to saving the few and putting them into our world. and somehow that constitutes as a good ending. It really shouldn't, not even for a game that was leading toward it. So it just feels like we played the open-world version of FF13...and the story still didn't manage to save it...why? because all it did was try to give the perfect ending

To me Lightning Returns is the Braking Dawn of the Twilight series. It did some excuses to keep it going and somehow bring the perfect ending where everyone is happy.

and it generally doesn't answer everything, or make everything completely clear. each one has their own theme, transforming the world continuously. you can't look at LR and say "yeah, it began with FF13"

Several XIII fans have been complaining about not all the answers being given.

Well, not much more I can say other than that I liked the story, I liked the characters, I liked the gameplay, and I liked the ending. These things combined result in a pleased customer and fan. There are many things I find flawed with the above argument, but it's beginning to feel like a broken record. I will just again say, to each their own. I know of many others in Japan that liked LR. I am also confident that many in the US, etc. will too.

That will be my final post in this thread.

many in japan liked other games such as FF13, and 13-2. but theres not much difference in saying "if japan likes it, so does the US"

I'll definitely be buying it, for while the 13 series isn't perfect so far, it's much better than a load of other JRPGs I could mention. What does this mean? That it's at least average (which is much better than a lot of people seem to say). 13-2 had a soundtrack that appealed to me, along with a few good characters and a passable battle system.

The main thing I liked about 13-2 though is that there is a load of collecting and sidequests going on. I'm absolutely certain that this will be the case in LR too (regardless of my lack of research/paying attention), so I'm sure there will be at least a few aspects that will keep me completely hooked right through.

Actually can't wait.

I have the special edition pre-ordered from SE. I am siked to play the demo, just got done the download!
