I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed, forgive me if it has but I'm curious.

What is the best system you've used on Final Fantasy? For example, the sphere grid, junction system of materia system?

I was discussing this with a friend the other day and personally I loved the Junction system in final fantasy 8. I know that it made the game a lot easier, especially when you junctioned the right magic on but I also enjoyed the Sphere Grid. I'm not sure why but it was fun, though it was kind of annoying with the locks and such Dx I wanted Ultima straight away! but I understand why they were put into place. I also enjoyed how on Final Fantasy II you could equip your character with two weapons and not just one ^_^

Still, what would you say is the best? The materia system was also good.. but I hated how you had to equip the 'All' materia for it to effect everyone Dx

I'l move this over to General Discussion

And Im gunna go with the Sphere Grid, I love the sphere grid, probably on a level that's actually borederline sad xD I like to save up my levels then mooch around the board, I could sit there for hours moving round the sphere grid and not get bored xD

Personally I loved the junction system in FFVIII. I think it made the game easier, but I felt like I had a lot more control as to which stats I wanted to focus on and how I wanted to build my characters. I ended up having a lot of fun with the junction system.

My second favourite would be the sphere grid in FFX, I'm not exactly sure why I loved it so much though.

I like the materia system. It was simple, yet complicated. It was a little slow in the beginning, but by the middle of disc 1, you can start doing really sweet things with combinations. One of my personal favourites is Counterattack + Cover then later HP Up and more Counterattack. What I liked most about the materia system is how it has its own backstory and explaination, and how it related to the plot of the game. The scene at Mt Nibel with Sephiroth, Tifa, Cloud and the materia fountain is the best example of this.

Honourable mention to the Sphere Grid. I liked how, like FFIX, it was a throwback to the old days when characters had clear, defined classes for characters, but later, if you so wished, you could have the characters grow out of the classes and into new ones. The only real problem is how certain characters can be made obselete. If say, Yuna and Lulu, after completing their own paths, go down eachothers, you make Lulu obselete, because Yuna is easily the superior character. Once everyone has filled in the whole grid, only 3 or 4 characters are really useful.

The junctioning system, although good, is too complicated for beginners, but then far too easy to exploit for experienced players. Within two hours of starting the game, you can be pretty damn overpowered if you knew what you were doing.

To be honest I liked the license boards of FFXII. Though I do wish it had individual license board for each character. It was the simplest and allowed for anyone to learn it in minutes. So though I understood the Sphere Grid and Materia Systems, When I introducced them to my foster brother a while back he didn't like them. But he easily picked up on the Liscience Board. It became his only FF game that he enjoyed.

Also his face was hilarious when the quickenings or espers showed up. His eyes practically lit up.

I liked the system in FF IX, where you'd learn abilities from equipped items and was able to equip passive abilities, the best. It was balanced, fair, allowed for a certain degree of customization, and you couldn't really abuse it like you could with the materia system or the junction system.

That's also true they should implement a hybrid of the two that actually works...

My favorite system was the junction. It mad it easy to get squall to deal 9999 damage
just by junctioning strong spells to his attack. Also, it allowed diversity among the party
members in my opinion. It allowed you to have all the necessary elements in a party^_^

I like Sir Kenneth fully agree with him. FFIX system works fair, and you can't abuse it unlike how you can with the Juncionting system. Although it doesn't have the full customization of the sphere grid and junction system, it has enough of it and with balance. I think the system in 7 is good as well but I wasn't a big fan I guess.

I also liked the tactics system and how it worked with the style of the game...

I like the system use in FF Tactics Advance it gives you a good range of customizing without being over complicated.

FFVII offered the greatest scope for character customization in the series, in my opinion. Also, it was so brilliantly flexible and addictive. I spent just as much time playing the game than I did experimenting with different types of Materia combinations and mastering them. I'm not exaggerating for effect either. I derived, a strange, arguably ungodly, pleasure from mastering and experimenting with my Materia. Every time I mastered an 'All' Materia I would celebrate by jumping up and down on my bed; and it felt like I had accomplished something truly special. Pathetic, isn't it? Also, the fact that your Materia would duplicate itself after being mastered meant you could in theory equip all 7 of your characters with the most vital Materia and it saved you money too. Above all else though, it was baby-simple to grasp, unlike the horrid complexity of FFVIII's Junctioning-system. FFIX's system, was so terrible I've subconsciously erased it from my memory, and FFX's, while good, I just found sort of pointless, really. I mean, the only character in FFX that is necessary to upgrade and level-up is Yuna, since her power directly mirrors the Aeons' powers, and in most boss-fights, you would normally rely most heavily on Aeons to win, so the rest of your characters almost became obsolete, making levelling them up sort of pointless. Not only that, but once you had levelled-out all their stats, they were all left with all exactly the same abilities, which, sort of scuppered their individualism, in a way. In the end, they were all basically copies of each other. FFXII's was alright, although I still prefer FFVII's Materia-syste, with a passion.

I like the IX ability system. I think its impossible to abuse it like the materia system, for example. I kinda liked the materia system, too, but the ability system is my fav.

I loved the system that Final Fantasy II used. It may be time consuming to reach the full potential of the system, but the level of customization is beyond any other game in the series. From the start of the game, each character is a blank slate that could be molded anyway the player saw fit. It felt natural seeing characters improve with weapons and magic each time they used them, as opposed to gaining AP points from battles or something like the sphere grid.

I'll admit that the system doesn't work well with things like HP, MP, and stats. But even with that said, FF II's system could work in modern games if it was properly modified. Have EXP points govern HP, MP, and stats, while FF II's system of Magic and Weapon profinecy is used to govern the power of spell and skill with weapons.

Simply put, FF II offers the best system when it comes to creating fully customizamble characters who could wield any spell or weapon without limits.

Have to disagree with you on these comments. I rarely, if ever used aeons at any point in the game other than the few timesit was forced upon you. However you are right in saying that in the later stages of the game when everyone had covered a decent amount of the grid that the idividuality was lost.

Each system so far has its positives and negatives. There is yet to be a system which allows true individuality amongst each character while still maintaining their usefullness throughout the game.

My favourite system would have to be the system in Final Fantasy Tactics. I never figured out how one obtained the job points, but the system of getting abilities that way was by far the best. I liked how you got to choose which ability you wanted as long as you had the right amount of points, so it's not like you had to do it in order. It was also cool how you had to get a certain job level in certain jobs to unlock other jobs for that character.

Another good ability system i enjoyed was FFX Sphere Grid system. Again, I liked how you could choose the path of each character. It was cool how you needed a bit of thinking to find the best root you should go and what abilities you wanted each. character to get.

the best system for ff games is the ps 1, this is because the best games are on ps1, ff 9 and 7, 8 isnt too bad, but ok 10 and 12 are good on ps2 but i keep finding now i have a ps3 i keep playin ff 7 on it because i love the game, but if i still had my ps1 i would play it on tht
