So I am a fashion designer and final fantasy has been a big inspiration to me. I was wondering who you think are the best and worst dressed characters and why?

I actually really love Lightning's costume in FFXIII.

As soon as I saw the title I thought of her design. I'm not sure what it is about it, but it's probably the best costume I've seen on a FF character to date. I'm not into fashion really, but I am into character design, and whether or not I like FFXIII, I do love Lightnings character design, her costume doesn't just look amazing, but it also says a lot about who she is as a character. It says military, it says strict and controlled. You can tell from what she's wearing that she's a no-nonsense type of character. At the same time the outfit makes her look extremely feminine, without looking like she's the type of character who cares about looking feminine.

Garnet's costume from IX.

I had to think a bit about this one. FFIx isn't a game I tend to think of when I think well-dressed. At least not in comparison to say FFXII. This costume though, I really like it. I love the undershirt and the laced chest, I think her design is smart because it doesn't make her look like a princess, but it doesn't make her look like a peasant. It's undoubtedly sexy, but at the same time she's all covered up which makes it sort of innocent at the same time.

Balthier from XII

I struggled to think of my favourably dressed guy. Hands down it has to be Balthier though. Male characters don't have so much variation as costumes as females do, but Balthiers is something different for sure. That vest. Those leather pants. Seriously, it's just a really great outfit. I have no good reason for it really, I just think it makes him look gorgeous :P

Bad clothing designs? Nooj from X-2, Seymour from X, Rikku from X-2 (not because it looks bad but just because it's not exactly a costume lol).

I think every character collectively from FFXIII was very well dressed, particularly Lightning and Snow.
And on the flip side, besides Lulu, the attire of FFX was not very good. In my own opinion- I think that they were poorly cliched.

Costumes almost always give a cliche of the character, but FFX just didn't land it right, especially given the serious temperament of FFX in itself.

I think Sheechiibii might have inadvertently covered the only design that immediately came to mind (Balthier's). You claim you're the leading man and a good place to start is to out-dress everyone else in Ivalice. His only fashion offence are the shoes, which is trivial enough to overlook. But Balthier does have a rival in the form of Al-Cid Margrace.

I don't know why he has a big metallic choker around his neck and on his upper chest, but it's a good luck. And yes, he's unbuttoned his shirt halfway down, exposing to the world his very intricate looking chest hair. It's also optimal when he has his sunglasses on, but he seems to rarely keep them on. He just prefers to give it to one of his mute female aides who just stuffs it into her chest by the looks of it.

The other Cid of FFXII also comes to mind:

White lab coat when you're the mad scientist? Nope. You dress up in a look that's reminiscent of aristocratic renaissance wear. You can be a bad guy who is slightly missing a few marbles and be very presentable at the same time.

Other designs are either decent but nothing terribly outstanding to worth much of a mention (Cloud's regular SOLDIER 1st class outfit is a good, standard, practical design that's good enough for the job. FFX Yuna's modest, conservative design fits her really well. I even sort of want Rinoa's cape top...), or just irredeemably bad. Maybe bad as a whole, or one aspect of the design is so bad it ruins everything else.

Lightning's default costume in Lightning Returns is horrendous no matter how you look at it. She has a collection of other awful costumes, but promotion trailers and material most frequently depict her in the so-called Saviour costume with the Gundam shield, vampiric collars, corset-like lower torso, four different flapping capes/tails and cheese grater arms. Ashe's minute skirt comes to mind. The rest of it is okay, but the skirt alone she could definitely do without, and it's impossible to overlook. Eiko meanwhile, has this very unfortunate choice of colour in the crotch area that makes her look...well, see for yourself. It can be easy to mistake it when you only take a very quick glance at her, or if you're looking at a small, low quality image of her:

I think nearly everyone in Spira is a fashion disaster. The designer decided to come back from a club one night drunk as hell and inexplicably designed to pick up his paper and pencil. You really have to wonder whether clothes stores even exist in Spira, or whether the populace likes to bask in the more primeval joys of putting together their own garments made out of whatever material they can find. I have no idea what's going on with Tidus's outfit. It's just asymmetry for the sake of it, and it looks a mess. Dona's is simply horrendous. No need for another adjective. Leblanc has done something miraculous. She manages to fight, run and scale mountains with that outfit, which is mysteriously held together. Super double-sided tape must have gone into it. Seymour needs no introduction. Aside from how physically silly he looks clothes aside, he's decided to perform his holy public duty in his bathrobes with his midriff wide open for the world to see.
