[11/09] Final Fantasy Agito announced for PS Vi- ahahaha, no I'm kidding. It's for iOS and Android.

Who'd have thunk? It seems like the Type-0 saga may have just returned to its original mobile roots! "Final Fantasy Agito" was recently trademarked by Square-Enix, leading to fervent fan speculation that they were readying an enhanced version of Type-0 - or a follow-up game - for the PS Vita or 3DS. However, you know how Square-Enix operates by now, so if you're preparing to preorder a brand new iPhone 5C or 5S after yesterday's Apple conference, you're in for a treat! Final Fantasy Agito is destined for mobile (and presumably tablet) formats.

Final Fantasy Agito is in fact, an alternative reimagining of the events of Final Fantasy Type-0, and is neither a sequel or a prequel. It will feature the return of familiar faces such as Rem, Ace and Jack, albeit with different roles. The latter of which can be seen wearing spectacles. It's an alternative reimagining because presumably you have to pretend that none of the events of Type-0 have happened, and that for these characters, the cruel Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology has something else - and new - in store for them. Joining these returning characters is a fresh face called Myuu Kagerohi (voiced by Haruka Tomatsu).

This being a mobile game, means it will conform to the general practices of mobile game design and the standard business model of in-app purchases. I'll let NeoGAF's duckroll explain:

Okay this isn't a prequel or a sequel to Type-0. It's definitely a reimagining. Another version of the same cycle in Type-0? The main characters from Type-0 are all in the game, along with new characters. The player is a student you can customize.

- There's a job system
- There's a mission system

So far so good?

- The game is divided into story chapters you can replay.
- They plan on releasing a new chapter every 2 weeks.

Still good? Sounds like a real game on mobiles! Whoa!

- Within those 2 weeks, 10 days will be for Solo Play where each player takes on their own missions, while 4 days are for Team Play where players work together to beat bosses.

Sounds like good social fun! What's the catch?!

- The game is Free2Play.
- There will be Energy used up when you do missions, which can be replenished via microtransaction items. You can also pay to continue if you fail a mission, and so on.

There's also a "decision" system in the game where the story changes based on the decisions made, but it seems that since this is a social mobile game, the decisions are made based on player polling results. Lol! I love this!

The main story is divided into chapters that will unlocked biweekly. There will be various player decisions and community voting (the social aspect of it I wager) that can influence how the story evolves as the player progresses through the game. Within those two weeks in between chapter releases, ten days will be set aside for solo play, where players can well, play through missions solo. The remaining four days are for player co-op. Find some other players, get together and defeat bosses as a group. Yay, social!

It is free to play and will have microtransactions. You know, if you ever fall in battle, you could erm, ooh, pay a couple of bucks to be revived? =D

No, no, nooooo! I wanted this for the Vita... ;__; Of course there is no downfall to a free game, but I'm still not very keen on mobile RPGs. I don't really see how this game could be properly executed from the PSP to phone anyhow. I feel like it'd be lacking.

I'm sure I'll be downloading this - as well as subsequent chapters if the gameplay is worthwhile - but I remain skeptical (and confused) as to why they took this direction.

I'll cut you a deal Square Enix: you release this for Android on day one instead of six months after the iOS release, and I'll download the game and even pay for a bit of in-game content. If this is iOS only, forget it. I've been down that road once and I have no desire to try again.

Of course what I really hoped for was just a straight port of the original game to mobile devices, but SE is at least trying to give fans something, so as long as it doesn't require me to be using some (warning: opinion incoming) awful Apple device, I'll respect that.
