************THE QUESTION ABOVE IS WHICH YOU "PREFFERED" NOT "LIKED" SORRY ABOUT THE "Liked it when it finally opened up" SHOULD BE "preferred it when it finally opened up"-In Gran Pulse************

Most people say when the game open up its gets better.......But I actually found it worser, when it just opened up (in Gran Pulse) it just unraveled a whole bunch of annoying missions and places to walk about.Because of all the walking about and missions there were much less cutscenes, the story didn't develop much from here and I kept having to go back to the datalog to catch up with the story. And it doesn't really provide much fun or better gameplay doing annoying time-consuming missions..........niether do you get fun out of walking around just an open field with big monsters lurking around. Anyone agree?

I am not going to vote because the game never ever actually opened up. it was just a big round linear path instead of a straight one.
I hated that this game was so boring and straight and nothing happened and you couldn't go off and do what you wanted and every second was a battle.

you're probably not the only one who liked it but I definitely did not enjoy this game for this reason...mostly.

I actually liked the linearity after a while. I always use guides for final fantasy games due to their puzzles and maze-like dungeons. As much as I like exploration, I also like a story-driven, straightforward RPG like XIII is. I haven't reached gran pulse yet (at nautilus now), but I am quite sure that I will stop playing for a while because the world suddenly opens up and there is a lot of grinding, walking and hunting to do.

But of course, I still agree that the game maps are too linear. There are no mazes so far. Even gran pulse is not maze-like based from what I have seen in playthrough videos. I hate mazes, but its absence is quite unacceptable. The game's beautiful graphics were like wasted efforts since you can't even explore them properly. Nautilus didn't feel like an amusement park. I mean, there was a ferris wheel in the distance and that's it? I heard they was planning to add a zoo in the making of the game. I don't see why is this aspect taken out.

I will say the best maps come from FFXII. It is explorable and maze-like, yet it is quite easy to find your way through due to mini-maps. If only XII has a world map and better protagonists, it will be a brilliant game.

So I am quite torn between linearity and exploration.

I'm not going to vote, since I didn't like the linearity in the game and I didn't like it any better when the game "opened up" either. In my opinion, just one place in a very long game to allow you to do whatever you want is not enough.

Even when I played through all the missions in Gran Pulse, I forced myself to play through them. I thought the whole idea of being able to fully level your characters up after the game was already completed was pretty pointless and stupid. All that so you can finally be able to beat the irritating Long Gui that you could never beat before...oh yeah and finally get enough money and the equipment needed to be able to fully level your weapons. :bored:

Plus, some people played straight through Gran Pulse and never ended up going back post game because they were so fed up with the game itself, so they never really got the benefits of the game opening up anyway.

This pretty much sums it up. The Steppe may not be a long winding corridor that only goes one way, but it's not that much better either. It's hardly "opening up" when it's just one big stretch of plains with more winding corridor-like paths going off it.

The game is just plain linearity from start to finish where most of the locations are all point-of-no-returns. Even reaching Gran Pulse changes little, though it does put the flow of the story to a temporary halt as I imagine that this would be the first real opportunity in the game to try and grind and acquire Gil. I came into the game expecting linearity mind you, and while it's not the biggest criticism I have towards the game, it ultimately did leave the game to feel soulless from start to finish. I consistently saw FFXIII as being a soulless game, so I'm not voting either.

At some points in the game, the game is honestly highly linear. Some parts of the game have you walking a long path which is only about twice as wide as you are. To me, this is when the game is at the lowest point.

So do I want an open-ended environment like Gran Pulse instead? Gran Pulse is nice, but I prefer something in between the two.

Well I'm not saying you have to vote on whether you liked it when it was linear or not.................I'm more intrested on which one you preferred!

Sure I didn't like it linear.....but I did like it more than when the game opened up........So like you guys I don't like it either way but prefer the linear parts of the game in cocoon.......rather than when you reached Gran Pulse.

but your questions in the poll were "do you like it when its linear or when it 'opens up'"
I just wanted to point out that it never opens up and I literally never knew there was a difference when I got to Pulse, at first I was like 'ZOMG YES FINALLY'
then checked the map and explored a little and realised it was exactly the same as the corridors from chapter 1 - 10.

I know, but It's kind of a typo.........should be preferred but don't think I can change it now :rage:...........just take it as the question is "did you prefer it linear or when you got to pulse?" it's preference not like..........

Also I would have to disagree Gran Pulse was MASSIVE it wasn't corridor to corridor..........it's no different to the fields in other FF games in fact I thnik it will take to get from one end of the archylte steppe to the the other end...........I would also have to with when you said a fight every second......I know of course you don't literally mean that, but I did kinda manage to avoid fights.....Sure there was monsters lurking everywhere suring chapter 1-10 in the linear corridor to corridor, but you don't really have to get caught in a fight.........I think only 75% of my fights were intentional.......the other 25% is probably that of which I wanted to avoid.

I'm not going to vote either (sorry >.<), as I did not like it at all and it never appeared to be anything but liner....

I'm sure the graphics were nice though! lol

I liked it the way it was. At least it was something different this time around. I think the major flaws of the game have less to do with linearity and more to do with plot points and the battle system and characters.

I didn't think the linearity would bother me, but come the end of the game I was sick and tired of it. It's fine through the parts where the game is solely story driven but when it wasn't, linearity just made the game boring - it pretty much limited the type and use of side-quests to take a break from the story. But there were some parts it felt like you were doing nothing for hours, and hours, and hours, and hours on end other than going in a straight line.

I voted for the more "open" world because even though I didn't enjoy any part of the game, I did prefer it kind of open.

There were more reasons to dislike the game other than the linearity, but I liked it that they at least kind of started trying once the world opened up.

I actualy dont mind linear games as long as they are enjoyable,This one was not.
I wouldnt have minded it being linear if all the other horrid elements werent along for the ride...Such as boring battle system, the charecters were unrelateable and didnt induce any feeling from me beyond "If you where real id hope you would die"...The whole game imo was just played out poorly all to geather.
I dont think it being linear was a downfall I think all of it wraped as shittily as it was togeather is what made it distastfull

I think the linearity made the game better, at least for me, by giving the game more replay value. Video games are art in a sense, and even if you hated the game you can't deny that the game looks amazing. Since the game was linear and did not let you go back to so many points in the game, I had to replay the game just to look around to see a cool environment or something. XIII is the only FF that I've completely replayed multiple times.

Kinda weird way to look at a positive side of it being so linear
