Any fans of this great strategy game?
If so, post here.

Obviously there are 3, plus the Conquerors expansion for II.
I like the 3rd one, though I'm running it with a less than minimum graphics card... *I was surprised it even works, I thought it would crash when I ran it* ...love the Home City thing. Though they could've expanded to Europe too. I thought it was a big mistake to diverge from Europe.

What did you like about this game?
I think it was awesome, the series as a whole.

I heard a ton about this game a few years back, I couldn't go a day without hearing somebody say something about Age of Empires.

Never played it myself though. Tsk.

I've played it. My half-bro has the Expansion pack and I did get addicted for a few weeks. =/ I thought it was unique, but I could never win when it comes to team battles.

You mean the MP?
They cheat a lot on MP.

But team battles AI are just pure challenges. I hope you didn't set the difficulty to the hardest one, 'cause they just develop like that. Plus I think they get a resource boost at start-up.

Oh I figured they did cheat, because 5 minutes into the game and their population has already tripled. =/ So I said screw it and quit playing the game, lol. It was fun while it lasted though.

I've personally never played AoE.
I've never ever seen what the gameplay's like.

But II is just too classic.
The first strategy game I ever played, or game for that matter.:|
That's when I first started hoarding video games...^_^

I played both I & II on the Kali.net servers like 10 years ago. Kali.net was a one payment account. Pay once have server access forever!

Anyone heard of Kali or even use Kali?

Peace,
Octavius

No, sadly. =(

So what did you guys think the game was lacking in general?

I thought the game was lacking more units, more storylines, actually, even though it seems like there was a lot, they could've done more with it like putting in a campaign for the Chinese or any of the other non-campaign tribes.
Also, I think that once you get the trebuchet, it's all good after then. So hard to kill when protected right, yet so powerful and long-ranged.

Same goes for the English Longbowman. I basically strive to create an army of 120 or so Longbowmen, form them in box formation and just march them up to the enemy base, battle done in less than 30 minutes after that.

:monster:

I love strategy games. Especially Age of Empires and Age of Mythology.
Anyway, I've played AoE I and II. I much preferred the first one though, there was something about the second that didn't really appeal to me.

It's always really easy to mass-produce lots of the same type of unit (catapults FTW!) and just pound the enemies into mincemeat. Kinda simplistic, hm? I think I prefer going on the defensive and building a huge town with lots of walls and towers and let them come to me... then I crush them xD

LOL! That's a nice strategy though I never really subscribe to it, I prefer leaving my city defenseless myself....just with a 120 longbowmen to defend it.
I think the Britons are overpowered in that game, especially once you get the Elite Longbowman, in AoE II.
You can mass them all together in square formation, and it would be a hail of arrows on the enemy.

Imagine 2 of those, marching down and outlfanking you...ooh, it's quite over once the AI lets me have my way with 140+ Longbowmen. :D

I've only played AoE II but I really enjoyed it. I've wanted the third one for awhile now but I haven't gotten around to buying it.

You should, though a few critiques of the game:

+ The French are highly overpowered in that game unless you're absolutely prepared for cavalry onslaughts

+ It goes all the way to the Industrial Age, which I thought was a big step in the series.

+ The stories are well-structured

+ The units are incredibly awesome

+ The graphics are stunning, even with a below-par graphics card...like I have. :P

Negatives:

- though the stories are great, there were too few to even get a really in-depth playthrough

- overpowered civs are commonplace when you play the skirmish games

- introduction of the Home City features kind of limits your abilities to advance in the game, you have to get it sent to you, like supplies of fortresses, but in a way, it limits you from building too powerful a base, like you could do in AoE II, with castles.

But overall, it's 9/10 :monster:

Opps thanks for the redirect Z, didn't mean to almost steal your thunder there :P.

This thread still doesn't show up in my PC - Gaming thread list though, so I may have to bookmark it *shrugs*.

I really count AOM to be part of the series, it's really splitting hairs if you get down to the nitty gritty.

I adore the WarChiefs expansion, fantastic stuff, everyone wants to be the Natives right?

Sadly the Asian Dynasties disc seems to have a hissy fit in my drive and it sounds like it's going to fly out at any second and go through my wall. So in light of that I tend to stick to the original and the WarChiefs as far as III is concerned.

Also gutted that Microsoft pulled Zone support for I and II, I just can't seem to get that Gamespy Arcade thing to work for me.

Damn, I really need a new and better computer since i can't play AOE III at all. D:

The graphics are awesome and the gameplay is awesome too. I actually kinda like the the card system which is pretty unique for an RTS of this caliber. My favorite civ is Ottoman empire 'cause jannisaries are awesome. :monster:

I actually play it on my old laptop, it has all of 512mb RAM and a 1.5Ghz processor (barely scrapes through).

You don't really need a high end computer to play it, well mine certainly isn't very high-end :P.

I love the gameplay and the graphics, like you say, well simply amazing. I have yet to try out the Ottomans, I haven't had the game for very long though, so still have plenty of civ's to try out :D.

Did I like Age of Empires...? Hell... Is that even a legitimate question? AoE were my first gaming addiction and my first Online games. I got the original AoE for free from some guy at my dad's office back in, like, 1997.

I liked it. Heck, my sister loved it and she wasn't and still isn't much of a gamer, but she loves the series. I got AoE 2 and had an awesome time playing online. Mostly Archer's Blood maps, if anyone remembers those... I remember having played AoE 2 tthe day of 9/11 with a tribute game... The freaking awesome clan I was in once (Icegem).

I just miss being able to play online... Seeing as online play is out of freaking service for the first two games.

(I have AoE 3 as well, but it didn't strike me as that great...)

I've only played Age of Empires II, and it was an ok game. I have to admit I never played the game without cheating. I've tried, but it took too long and I would start to get bored with it so I started cheating.

I like the series, but the third game doesn't run too good on my comp. Sea warfare is ruined for me because of the advanced graphics. :(

That said, I would love to play IV.

My only dislikes are the low unit caps and battle system. Infantry have too much health, it's too balanced, etc. And I want to see an expansion of the trade system in III.

I just miss being able to play online... Seeing as online play is out of freaking service for the first two games.

Apparently it is possible through a free service called GamesSpy Arcade or something. It means having to download a client software thing of theirs though.

I tried to use it, navigating through it is highly complicated and it always freezes up on me, so I've had no success to date. In fact I've actually given up trying.

It was a real pity when Zone pulled support for Age of Empires I and II.:sad2:
