The surprise announcement from Square Enix's 1st Production Department Premier event last week was Final Fantasy XIII-2. The direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII was announced as a Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 multiplatform title that will be released some time this year. Following the event, Dengeki PlayStation was able to interview Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama, who are reprising their respective producer and director roles.

At the Premier event, the XIII-2 unveil was preceded by an animated account of the Fabula Nova Crystalls mythology. This mythology serves as the foundation for all the games in the series, including XIII, Versus XIII, XIII-2 and Type-0 (formerly known as Agito XIII).

The purpose for showing this footage, explained Kitase to Dengeki, was to show that FFXIII only dealt with a portion of the mythology, covering such concepts as the fal'Cie and l'Cie. FFXIII did not explain the full breadth of the mythology, however. To better know the whole of the mythology, players will have access to the upcoming Fabula series titles.

XIII-2 covers a different area of the Fabula mythology from XIII. While the original focused on the relation betwen the Pulse and Lindzei deities, the focus for XIII-2 will be on the Etro deity. Toriyama said the game will delve deeper into the Fabula mythology this time.

According to Toriyama, the XIII-2 story will be like taking the afterstory that was written in the bonus booklet that was included with Xbox 360's Final Fantasy XIII and expanding from there. The story kicks of after XIII, in the Gran Pulse world.

The story is a true sequel to XIII and will answer some of the mysteries of what happened in the background in the build up to FFXIII's ending. The world will expand further in XIII-2 (I'm not sure if Toriyama is speaking literally or figuratively here). The story's taste will be darker and more mysterious than the original.

Similar to XIII, Lightning will be a principal character. Other characters will also appear in the game in "unexpected forms," according to Toriyama. Some of the returning characters will see major changes to their atmosphere. The game will also have a number of new characters, in addition to the mysterious male character from the trailer.

That mystery character is the character next to Lightning in the game's logo, Kitase confirmed. He's meant to be a character in conflict with Lightning, a character of equal strength.

The early trailer and single official screenshot show a major change for Lightning: she wears armor. While this is a big change, the character's image will not have a Final Fantasy X-2-style change, said Kitase. For those who haven't played it, FFX-2 had a poppy, comedic feel compared to FFX, with Yuna and the other leads dancing around and changing clothes during battle. XIII-2 will have the serious feel of a true numbered entry in the series, said Kitase.

Lightning appeared in the trailer surrounded by feathers at some points. These features are used in a number of areas, including parts of Lightning's armor. Remember how roses appeared on the screen when Lightning summoned Odin in FFXIII? This time, the feathers are meant to represent something holier -- a closer approach to the realm of gods.

The two only briefly discussed gameplay. The game's battle system will be a further evolution of FFXIII's ATB (active time battle) system. Because it's a sequel, explained Toriyama, they want to actively use the the experience they gained in making the original to address issues that need to be addressed, and to make areas that are already considered good even better. For XIII-2's development, they've been running tests and listening to opinions from inside and outside the company and even from overseas.

Toriyama wants to add some sort of system for controlling difficulty. This could take the form of the inclusion of an easy mode, which is something they're currently looking into. Toriyama also assured that they're working to make it so that those who didn't play the original will be able to enjoy themselves with XIII-2.

Hmm. With this I'm starting to consider that Etro really will be involved in a greater capacity. I'm wondering whether or not the male character's darker design and Lightning's more "pure", lighter design represents Etro. Perhaps its a clash between Lindzei and Etro, because regardless of the ending of XIII, the novella reveals that
one third of Cocoon's citizen population died.
For all we know, that could have been enough to summon Lindzei into the world. Possibly even Etro if the whole "Divinity will have a greater role" thing is true.

I guess time will tell, but this little announcement has perked my curiosity. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

^^
One third of Cocoon was destroyed
(especially the
Bodhum area
), not the populace actually, because those destroyed areas were already forced to be uninhabited following the Purge (so ironically, the Purge could have
stopped Lindzei or whoever the heck the term "Maker" applies to, from returning
).

I welcome new characters actually. FFXIII itself has some of the fewest characters since FFIII, and that's something that should be addressed in the sequel, to actually make the world seem more alive. Just as long as they aren't rehashes of character archetypes we've seen already (like Snow and Hope) but given new looks and names. And please, no more artificial connections to FFX-2. FFX-2 is totally another game. What you should do is solely compare this to FFXIII and see where it can be vastly improved from the first one. And on that note, I'm glad it's going to be nothing like FFX-2. I don't know how the producers took it seriously when they were making FFX-2.

Righ all this is nice and all but wait the one on the left in the logo is Lightning's Rival? If anything that looks like a girl and I originally thought it was a "hell" version of Lightning but whatever. I dont see how that is a guy xD. But everything else I love of this analysis. I have a feeling that XIII-2 will have a true turn as one direct sequel that actually DESERVES to be part of the series.

He's meant to be a character in conflict with Lightning, a character of equal strength
what stupidity is this? Never in FFXIII Lighting had any superior strength or abilities plot wise, all characters were treated absolutely the same way.

^ I disagree. Even before they became l'cie, Lightning showed a lot of actual strength and skill in scenes, and we know she was a member of the Guardian Corps, so it explains the why me thinks.

Truth be told, I actually hope they don't reveal too much about FFXIII-2. With the game coming out in less than a year, I don't think we really need all that much fodder to mull over. People have already decided whether to check out the game or not, and in general, a lot of S-E's bashing is about how they reveal things right away and then don't put out until years later >_<

Sounds really good. It gets me really excited for the game. However, I am still skeptical whether they will fulfill every of our wishes. The game's biggest problems, linearity and lack of towns, are not even mentioned in the interview... Looking forward to more news though.

I'm still deciding whether or not I am going to buy this game seeing as I'm already getting Duodecim and Agito.

Just as I predicted the story is gonna be more mythology-related which exists in the game even though Etro or Lindzei aren't even mentioned in FFXIII apart from FFXIII. But with the game to be more darker I'm definately expecting something more dramatic and maybe some tragedies.........and hey what about
crystalized Vanille and Fang? Even though I didn't want the story to be based on them it would kinda suck if they wern't rescued. I expect it to be some kind of side-story along with goddess etro.
As for the guy.......well I want him to be a playble character he doesn't look like the annoying, cheery or hero-type. So he may be a decent guy to add........
hopefully they get rid of Snow and Hope and bring in both Serah and Sazh. But I doubt Serah would leave Snow's side........and if she is a character Snow would be........you could kinda say that for Sazh and Dajh as well.

On the gameplay note,if its gonna be a developed system I seriously don't see this being good........I don't think they'll have the "mash X" (autobattle button) for most battles but something else but annoying and repetetive in the same fashion.

Sequal

My favorite FF was X, and that game produced a sequal. FFX-2 was a terrible game, and i know for sure XIII-2 will be terrible as well. Final Fantasy's are not ment to have a sequals. Its supposed to be the begining and the end of a story.

they have confirmed that XIII-2 will have a darker feeling and will not have any pop feel like in X-2. Just saying :)

I wasn't the biggest fan of FF XIII but this does sound interesting and I'll be looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I just hope for SE sake and ours, that it works.

soooooo it gonna be different from final fantasy X-2, sounding good to me :) also liking the sounds of the updates to the battle system :) hopfuly it won't be soo automatic :)

I wish some new screens and details would start emerging.
The wait for information on new titles always kills me.
This one especially since Lightning is one of my all time favorite FF characters.
I'm purposely maxing out my stats, and collecting everything I can in my new XIII file just in hopes of a cool bonus with save game data towards the next game.
But with my luck, they'll cut that little bit out for time constraints, and the time it takes to offer such things.

I also hope this game gets DLC, I think it would be a neat feature, but I also doubt that.

So... Lightning's equal. Is on the dark side. *coughsephirothcough*

WHAT. Who said that?

I don't know about this game. The first one really wasn't all that good... I'm wondering if it'll be worth it...
