Final Fantasy XIV is due out on PlayStation 3 and PC this summer, but according to producer Naoki Yoshida, a next-gen version is also a possibility.

“We have been promising our players for over three years that we’re going to bring this game out on PlayStation 3,” Yoshida told IGN (note: this interview was conducted before PlayStation 4′s official announcement). “We’re definitely going to keep that promise and that’s what we’re focusing on at the moment. That being said we do have a Windows version which is very high end, so as long as the console side is going to have a high spec it’s not a problem for us to match those console’s requirements.”

A PC beta for Final Fantasy XIV will kick off on February 25.

This is supposed to be another MMO, right? They'll only raise the already high expectations people have for the game if they put it on the PS4. Hopefully they deliver this time, as although I don't like MMOs that much, I would be willing to get into one that includes Final Fantasy.....if its good. :mokken:

I was thinking it would eventually find its way to the PS4. They will most likely use the PC code and not the PS3's since the PS4 is closer in design to a PC than its predecessor. Good news!

Very good point. In fact, given how close the PS4 is to the PC in terms of architecture, I think it's pretty much going to be an inevitability that SE decides to eventually produce a port. For longevity's sake of an MMO and the onset of transition to next-gen, they have every reason to do this, though I can see them being slow to do this, given that they have to see how the game relaunch will actually do and whether the PS4 install base in the future seems adequate enough to warrant a next-gen version release.

Having seen some trailers of how ARR would run real-time on PS3? The choppiness of the framerate compared to the PC version is very apparent. I can't imagine how unbearable that may get if it gets even busier on-screen, say, an auction house jam-packed with hundreds of people, or a particularly large and hectic boss fight...

*sigh*

This is probably the best looking FF game I've seen yet. Pretty amazing how utterly crap (and it was) the original version was. Something like this should have been what we got for a FFXIII. :sad3: /but obviously without that MMOness. I'm just commenting on aesthetics and sheer sense of scale. And fanservice with the musical scores and all that.

Yeah, the first version was shite. Given the attention SE's putting onto its MMO entries of FF, I think it's reasonable to imagine the next in the series having some of that open world element. They took a lot of cues from XI in making XII, perhaps we'll see the same with XV. XIII's world was pretty, we just never really got to go explore it (and it always seemed walled off, like even if we had the option of going to it, there would be a physical obstacle stopping us). I'm thinking they just showed the PS3 version to let people know it exists, they'll probably fix the frame rate before the beta starts.

I really do hope XV goes to a more medieval setting, XIII and Versus are enough cyberpunk/modernism for one generation. There isn't an HD FF that's set in that yet.

Okay, first off, FFXIV is going to be available this Summer for the PC and PS3? It's about freakin' time! xD Seriously, I thought they were aiming for a February/March re-release date, but hey, they can take as long as they need at this point -- so long as the outcome is successful this time around. And don't forget playability, since I couldn't even load up my freakin' copy way-back-when. -___-;

Anyhow, back on topic. This news of FFXIV being made for the PS4 kinda annoyed me since I don't expect to buy a PS4 this year -- perhaps not until next Summer the soonest. But it does make sense for FFXIV to be available on the PS4 because it can handle the game a lot better and the specs are comparable to that of a high-spec PC, which is the ideal format to play the game anyhow (as opposed to the PS3).

Honestly, if the PS3 version is going to be as bad as everyone says, then I may consider buying a new PC. I really wanted to play FFXIV on the PS3 (one of the main reasons I spent $300 on the 500GB PS3 *cough* >.>), but I need a new desktop PC anyhow, so it would be a valuable investment really. Actually, playing on the PC seems more viable since I just realized it's more comfortable to play at a computer desk than on the living room couch, lol. Decisions, decisions...

After getting my hopes up for nowt I stopped caring about XIV 2 years ago. They first announced this at Sony's E3 in 2009. Released it for PC first (Surprise, surprise) on September 2010 with a planned March 2011 PS3 release. Yeah... that went well.

I hear the game was so bad that they fired the entire staff. No surprises there. And now we have the 2.0 version, which I've still yet to see running on a PS3. I suppose that will also come out on PC first too as I'm now beginning to think the PS3 version is a mere myth so they'd be as well as putting it on PS4. Which of course will push it's release on console back even further, yayyyyy!

A total shambles from start to finish.

Not really. The director in charge of the project (Tanaka) left the position, and then the company due to health issues. But the core team has remained pretty much there, but they drafted in an unspecified number of extra staff from other departments and teams to help nuke the world and rebuild it again for the second version.

And now we have the 2.0 version, which I've still yet to see running on a PS3.

PS3 version has an awful framerate. Which was pretty much to be expected. And expect that to get worse at certain points. I wouldn't go near it, to be honest.
