Square Enix ended the financial year in March 2012 in profit thanks to Deus Ex and Final Fantasy 13-2.

An increase in net sales meant the company saw profits of 6 billion yen (£47 million), a noticeable improvement from last year’s loss of 12 billion yen (£94 million).

Square Enix stated, “The Group's results were favourable due to increased sales of console games boosted by our major titles, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Final Fantasy 13-2.” No specific sales figures for those titles were revealed.

It bodes well for the company, which has an exciting year-end ahead of it. Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs are due before 2012 ends, and beleaguered MMO Final Fantasy 14 is seeing a staggered re-release through to 2013.

The release of the financial results happened alongside news that the Tomb Raider reboot would be delayed. The latest reincarnation of Lara now won’t be out until 2013.

Hmmm. Well, I suppose this just goes to show that people really will buy anything if you slap a big-name label on it. xD

I'm not surprised, though...big companies never make losses for very long, not even with the economy in this sort of state. I'd like to say that I don't know how long the company is going to be able to keep making profits when it has absolutely nothing promising on the horizon, but just the name "Square Enix" sells games, and if it could make profits off titles as bad as those two, it'll still keep going strong.

Human Revolution got great reviews across the board, from the big gaming review sites as well as sites with genuinely good reviewers, and most people only see the name Eidos attached to it. I am not sure how you came to the conclusion it was sold solely for being a Squenix game

[14/05/12] Square Enix Shares Regional Shipment Targets For This Year

During a briefing today, Square Enix shared earnings and shipment targets for the current fiscal year.
As reported earlier, Square Enix returned to profitability last year due (ending March 31, 2012) in part to strong console performance from games such as Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Deus Ex. The company saw net sales of 127.9 billion yen, operating income of 10.7 billion yen and net income of 6.1 billion yen.
For the current year, ending March 31, 2013, the company expects a 29% increase in sales to 165 billion yen, a 40% increase in operating income to 15 billion yen, and a 49% jump in net income to 9.0 billion yen.
Dragon Quest X will launch to Japan on August 2. Square Enix mentioned the game at the briefing, saying that the beta test is going smoothly.
Despite DQX's Japanese release, Square Enix expects Japanese unit shipments to drop from the previous year. In fiscal 2012, the company sold 17.66 million pieces of software, split 5.58 million for Japan, 6.74 million for North America, 5.11 million for Europe, and 0.32 for Asia and other territories. This year, it expects 18.8 million units, split 7.6 million for North America, 7.3 million for Europe and 3.9 million for Japan.

In the Japanese market, outside of DQX, Square Enix also has Dragon Quest Monsters Terry's Wonderland 3D due on May 31 and Bravely Default due some time this year. Hitman is also confirmed in Japan this year. Tomb Raider, while confirmed for Jan to March 2013 in North America and Europe, is listed as just 2013 in Japan.

Its amazing they can sell millions of copies, cut corners like mad and still boast puny profit margins. :ohshit:

It would seem their business model isn't quite viable & not much progress has made in terms of decreasing development costs and long man hours necessary to produce a finished product.

But, then, everytime a new console is released or hardware evolves it tends to introduce a new learning curve and piles development costs higher. Just when they have PS3 & XBOX 360 development figured out, here comes the fkin PS4 & XBOX 760 & its time to start all over again from scratch & figure out what is and isn't possible. :elmo: There's also the greater depth & time involved in developing for higher end systems.

Blah, blah, blah. :ohshit:

BS

I dont believe it. FfXIII-2 is known for having low sales worldwide. But eh th game sure has been promoted so much. Deus ex i do believe.

Deus Ex isn't surprising since it's impressed the gaming media and it's usual non- Final Fantasy based fans. FF XIII-2 just shows that fans really wanted a improvement from FF XIII and a less linear more original Final Fantasy game- ie towns and shops etc.

Not sure if it's good or bad news. It could mean that SE gets more of a idea what the FF fans want for a future FF title or it could mean that they can just basically spam the series and people will still buy the games no matter how bad it seems; as longs as it has FF and a roman numeral on the title.:hmmm:
