A couple of weeks ago, [Siliconera] reported a few details from a Famitsu magazine interview with Tetsuya Nomura, discussing the Kingdom Hearts games and what’s next for the series’ story. That interview has been translated by SQEX GAL.

Speaking to what Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance’s story will be like, Nomura also told Famitsu he’s trying to explain it to Disney little by little, since it’s difficult for them to understand it all at once. Interestingly, Nomura says the reason Kingdom Hearts has a complex story is that Final Fantasy creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, once told Nomura long ago that he needed to make the story more complex than planned, or else it wouldn’t be able to compete with other games.

The 3DS game, however, will be somewhat different from the previous games in this regard. “The theme this time was ‘bold action,’ but we also wanted to stress the importance of the story’s tempo,” Nomura said about Dream Drop Distance.

“Though the story is important to fans as shown by the results of the [Famitsu] survey, it won’t be drawn-out,” he elaborated. The Famitsu editor conducting the interview asked if this meant the game would have fewer cutscenes, to which Nomura replied this wasn’t the case.

“Not meaning that we’ve decreased the number of cutscenes, but having each one explained one by one reduces the tempo of the game, so we’re introducing a new system to make up for it,” Nomura replied.

“It’s a directionally different system like what’s being introduced in Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which won’t have cutscenes; it’ll be a sort of integration where you can play during the event scene. Along with that, Sora will fight alongside different friends. There’s also a secret movie being prepared, so please look forward to it.”

Interesting. Still confused as to why you play as young Sora (or I knew and forgot). I need to get a 3DS to play this when it comes out... And they need to announce KHIII already >_<

Perhaps he should try explaining it in song?

Final Fantasy meets Disney. That is the stuff that dreams and fanfiction are made of. OF COURSE it'll be able to compete, they didn't need the absolutely nonsensical and thoroughly boring story that came with it. Idiots :martel:

"Sorry guys, we ran out of pointless and annoying side plots, so we're not going to bother including one this time. Nobody takes the 3DS seriously anyway."

Looks like Final Fantasy XIII DID teach Square Enix one thing: people get bored watching long cutscenes with no point whatsoever. But they don't want to omit them, so they're going to let you do stuff in the game in them. I...suppose that is a reasonably good solution. Depending on what you can do.

Oh. My. Gawd. :cali:

Is this the first time we're hearing about this game? 8( I've never heard of it before. I'm happy to hear about the cutscenes thing... but.. does he mean like on Assassin's Creed? I don't really get what he means??

You didn't hear when this was announced last year? :P And I'm not sure what you mean about Assassin's Creed. I don't think you could move around in cutscenes :ahmed:

That's what I'm asking...

What does Nomura mean by this cutscene difference? :hmmm:

I instantly thought that the scene would go all widescreen and you could run around and hit stuff in the background while the camera focuses on the other characters doing serious business. But that would just be silly.

^That's what I thought too. Which is like what happens in Assassin's Creed. I don't really think this would fix cutscene problems, though.

Maybe Nomura means people can skip the scenes?

Well KH2 and on you could skip all cutscenes. I guess interactive cutscenes would mean...choosing what you want to say like in Mass Effect or Dragon Age to effect the outcome of the game?

What does he mean by the cutscene part? :olivia:

I don't really like hearing that they got inspiration from Final Fantasy 13 games in any way... :/

Also how do you not understand your own game's storyline? :O

If that's what he means, that would be pretty sick xD

I would be interested in a KH with multiple endings that are affected by your decisions :ahmed:
