Lucky for me, she was the only one not named after a family member. Much like others in this thread, she was named after a girl I had a crush on at the time.

I don't know about embarrassing names.. but I remember the 1st time I played FFI, I named the warrior Redd because he was.. red.
I named Barret Mr. T, and Red XIII Sheeba, after my dog at the time (RIP) on my 1st time playing FFVII.
I like to stick to their actual names now though.
Oh, and I named Yuffie Buffy for like, no reason

When I was playing FF III, I had a couple of player characters walking around with the same names as a couple of non-player characters... :x
Aaand in Tactics, it was pretty much a given that my tamed monsters would have names that fit this thread perfectly. I had a couple of floating eye class monsters with names ranging from "Singelnad" to "Testicles", and quite a few pig class monsters with food names.

I came home after a night out drinking last winter and picked up where I had left off, relatively near the beginning of a FFVIII re-play, and awoke in the morning to find I had met and named Aerith as SaggyTits and Tifa as Sausage.
It goes without saying that I started again from the beginning.

I ussually keep the names as they are because when i think of Tidus I don't want to think of Jack for example.

The embarrassing one with Tidus was that my mom was in the room while I was playing and kept questioning the name 'Tightass' and made a sexual remark or two. Kinda regretted naming him that.
In FFVII I ended up naming my characters after all of my "good friends" and now when I play it I realize that I no longer talk to NONE of those people. haha. How sad.

Quite a bit of “Final Profanity” in here, eh? Tsk, tsk. Ah well, I might have done something in that manner once or twice myself…
The only thing I remember for sure, is naming the cast of VII after me and people I knew back then, as many have done here also. My puberty-driven enthusiasm with that diminished long before I finished the game, though. So, as long as a game deserves to be taken seriously, I’m inclined to do just that and stick with the original names.
I mean, how dopey would it be to have a conversation go like this:
“So, who’s your favorite character from FFVII? Mine is Cloud.”
- “Who?”
“Cloud… the main character?!”
- “Oh, you mean [insert your own name]/EmoBlonde/Buttsex/whatever.”
Yeah, better not get too used to those customized names…
