undeserving of the final fantasy name

I hated this game to begin with, left it for a year and then picked i back up and played it, I ended up really liking it and appreciating the Gambit system, I liked not having to worry about casting spells all the time. I don't think I would ever pick it up again but I did eventually enjoy it.

Now i wish I could say the same for XIII

I really think that saying that this game is undeserving of the Final Fantasy name is a bit harsh- I mean these people designed it as a Final Fantasy game, and because of this should be named as such. I think it was a good game, I really enjoyed it. But you know, it's been named a FF game, so obviously the developers thought it deserved the FF title, otherwise it would be a different game...

I really liked Final Fantasy XII to be honest. That's probably because I grew up with FF and its nearly impossible for me to hate. . .well. . .any of them. Can't say the same thing for FFXIII yet because I haven't played it yet. Some weren't as enjoyable as others, but I didn't hate them. But I can clearly see the reason on why you (and some others) find the game to be a disappointment. Even though I easily adjusted to the system, the whole battle system and gambit setup is indeed much different than any of the past FF games, but I easily adjusted to those (I kind of like it.) Some of the side quests were a bit of a challenge and not as easily done than some in the past FF's, and I will say that they could have done a little better with some of the character design - like Vaan's. His vest makes him almost look anorexic. But yeah, I beat FFXII years ago, but I still do play it whenever I feel hits of nostalgic or want to once again try to finish a hard sidequest (like trying to find Omega Weapon XII . o__e). Bottom line, I can understand the pros AND cons of the game, but above all, I liked it .

It deserves the title more than 13 does :(

I personally feel its the best new FF title I've played. I was just talking about the reasons people don't like the game for just the other day...

I must say that even though I'm a huge advocate of turn-based battles and in-depth character development, I really enjoy this game quite a lot. It's honestly the first and only game I can think of where I've actually enjoyed running around leveling up, because the environments are that gorgeous that I could just sit there running around in them for days.
Glad to see other people enjoyed it too! :3

I loved running around and leveling up! The world was beautiful, the music was how I liked it, had the old FF feel, had the Star Wars themes like the old FF titles, had great characters (Larsa! :33) and awesome enemies xD

@Sum1sgruj:
Those were some of the things I didn't like either. Well, I liked the hard bosses. More FF titles have some pretty easy bosses. I hated that Chest thing, but most of the time they were chests you weren't supposed to be open to get Zodiac, which is definitely not a waste of time to get :)

But to be honest, when I first played, the Gambit system and Licence System got to me. I didn't know what the heck they were talking about and then I came back and looked through...then I loved it! :>

I think with a better story and a more endearing cast XII might have been one of the best FFs. The battle system wasn't as good as XIII imo but the way in which battles were initiated was far more fluid than the marathon random encounters of I-X or the stop start battles in XIII. It made grinding much more bearable and it handled new concepts like rare game, chaining and gambits very well especially when you consider XII as the prototype for the modern, playable to the casual gamer FF.

I also thought many of the locales were very memorable (Bhujerba in particular) and the new races were a welcome addition, like the Viera.

And when you factor in the signature weaknesses of the series (palette swaps, cringe worthly dialogue, generic motives, etc) XII doesn't actually measure up that badly to the FFs before it.

Not deserve the FF name ?

eh.
Maybe a little harsh.
It IS a terrible FF game.I feel so although others can disagree if they choose.
How can it be so great when the producer quit....Matsuno before the game was finished.
The excess randomness factor, overpowered bosses, useless espers, zodiac spear cunumdrum, Vayne not much of a villain, Vaan not much of a hero/leading man, poor plot and character development, the list goes on.
If you go and watch the youtube videos of so called experts jumping through hoops for hours trying to get a zodiac spear in the Henne mines or some other hard to get item and you wonder why bother. The game is simply too exasperating to be a great game by any stretch of the imagination.
And yes I have a personal agenda about the game as well, having been run off of other websites for just expressing my opinions about the game so my negative feelings about it became personal.
But if others like it that's fine.It has always been fine with me because as people our opinions may vary and everyone is entitled to have an opinion.
For better or worse.

To be honest, FFXII is one of my least favorite FF games, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game. I loved the battle system, but to me, the story just seemed to drag by slowly and the characters were boring. (except Baltheir. He'll always be awesome.) The game sucks sometimes, but saying it's not fit for the Final Fantasy name is just a little to far. At least they tried mixing it up a little instead of going with the standard battle system over and over.

well,
personally, although I agree with every criticism that's sad about it.
I enjoyed it

I thought the battle system was fine I did everything manually and I never used gambits.

I think the gambits were the only thing that I hated about it, everything else was more or less forgivable and I had a good time playing the game.
I adored Ivalice, and I liked most of the characters as they were, although they weren't developed, or very important to the plot, witch I thought was a shame

do I regret playing it?
absolutely not

"Undeserving"? Well, I suppose if I were to look over the FF games we have at the moment, I'd give that title to FFXIII not because I thought it was truly atrocious and needed to be condemned to eternal hell, but because it just didn't feel much of a Final Fantasy game at all with a lot of absent elements.

Aaaanyway, to get off the tangent and back on topic, I actually enjoyed FFXII immensely. It's rather like FFXIII, it's videogaming Marmite, except that FFXII is generally given a lot more praise than its successor. A lot of the animosity goes towards the story and the cast. Now the cast of course, had the crap Vaan as the bastard lead protagonist, but it had people to compensate for him - from Balthier to the Judge Magisters - while the story, while not everyone's cup of tea, went off into an interesting political direction that actually had me hooked. Yes, I know character interactions were kind of lacking and at times it didn't feel like much was actually happening, but looking at Vayne, the way he is written and his motives do give off the vibe that he's a more human kind of villain, a less unbelievable type of villain. He may not be the most powerful or the most mwahaha, I'll destroy the world with a tremendous display of power kind of bad guy, but that is why I find him interesting.

FFXII at least keeps the conventional elements of a Final Fantasy game. It comes with interesting explorable locations such as Bhujerba and Archades and the usual different kinds of races running around. Though not a free-roaming game, FFXII offers moments where you can just look around your surroundings and really get immersed into the world of Ivalice. Gameplay wise, it was not my favourite at all, but it's still a solid system that worked rather effectively, bar the times when the Gambit system becomes a little irritating when you want it to work properly for you. Like all FF games, it's pretty heavy in the way of grinding and if I have to criticise it, it's the numerous monsters you will have to kill to get enough money from the loot. I suppose at least with FFXIII, it's gentler when it comes to the need to grind.

I think with a better story and a more endearing cast XII might have been one of the best FFs.

I enjoyed the story. I actually found it kind of refreshing, because every FF is an emotional drunk tank and 12 is more about epic political mayhem.
I mean, does every FF have to have the same symmetry to be brilliant?

'Chanced' chests are one of two things I disliked about the game. The other is the difficulty swaying back and forth. With these things combined, the game can be nerve-racking. Thankfully, the gameplay is fun enough to keep you from snapping the disc in half.
Enix needs to straighten up. Every FF they've come out with has something absurd. Like 10 and it's weapon/armor system. Or 13 and it's.. entirety.
