Free to play or Pay to play?

it gonna be pay i no it :) square enix need to get money in some way :)

i would prefer it if you buy the game but thats all you pay. that is the reason i did not buy ffxi

You obviously don't understand the point of an MMORPG, then. :monster:

MMORPGs are neverending games, that are constantly updated with new content.

Also, what with SE being a famous game company and not whatever runs Runescape... They need money to continue paying their employees to continue developing their projects... so go figure O:

They may have a free trial, but I'm pretty damn sure that's as close as it's going to get to free.

I wish it was a rpg game to but at the store but that doesnt work like that at all, for like hundreds of updates of couse you need to pay,i just wish this game would suprass that damn world of warcraft but we know it wont.

As well as the all the updates and new content that will come into the game periodically, there is also all that daily maintenance of the servers etc. required. There's the fact that FFXIV in itself must take up millions to develop. Therefore for SE to make an actual profit, having it mostly free with the occasional fee-paying transactions for certain things simply isn't practical. So of course SE will slap in monthly fees. I think they even said already that FFXIV will have monthly fees.

Plus, this is SE. Like all companies, they aim to get lots of cash. Plus, even if FFXIV is on the scale of Runescape or something, I can still imagine them charging monthly fees anyway. That sounds like what SE would do.

i honestly don't mind paying a monthly fee aslong as the game is worth it i played Xi for around 4 years and really enjoyed the game for a few years just recently when i heard XIV was coming out i decided to calm down a bit ha but yeah it will definatley be pay monthly and im guessing it will be around the same price as XI

Well, I can tell you what will happen and what I want to happen. It will be pay to play, no doubt. However, I want it to be kinda like Runescape, where you don't have to pay a monthly fee, but you get limited content, or you can choose to pay the monthly fee and get full content. That would be a really smart decision, I think, because people that otherwise wouldn't buy the game because of the monthly fee would buy the game. And the people who already would buy the game even with the monthly fee will get a ton more content than the ones who don't want to pay. It's a win for everyone.

Well, it's not like MMO companies ask for 50 bucks a month. It's only usually only around 15 bucks monthly. If you can't get 15 bucks a month, you should probably ask your mother to stop buying booze and cigarettes with your child support money :wacky:

I'd say I get to spend about 50 bucks on a monthly basis, and that comes from just helping around the house.

Being unemployed is fun. -_____________________-

15 doesn't seem like much to someone without bills to pay.

15 for the game.
80 for the phone bill.
120 for college.
...and much more.

It starts to add up very quickly. I have to ask myself "Is that 15 dollars worth spending?" and a lot of times the answer is no.

i would rather pay to play cuz they use that money to make the game a lot better and if you didnt pay it would just be a waste of time and money cuz it would be so krapy

Well since XI was pay to play then I am going to say that XIV will also be pay to play. And like others have said, they have to keep people working on the game, keeping up with server issues, modding the game, adding and creating content, ect...

If you plan to just casually play this game and not get much out of it... I'd say to pass, but if you want to dive head first into this, you can really make it worth your money. It just all depends on if you are going to like the game or not. For this reason, many companies offer free trails.

heh ... I know it is awesome game, because you have to pay for it, but i think paying for playing isn't good :P Games should be free you know ! xD That's my opinion.

Game developers actually don't pull money out of their asses and decide to make a game out of the blue.

I don't get why so many people complain about a monthly fee for MMOs.

Monthly fees are there so that people can continue to develop the game. 15 bucks is 4 times less than what you would pay for a brand-new release. And really, it's 15 bucks for one month.

If you don't like it, it's not like you have to keep paying for it. On top of that, most games offer free trials so you can play the game to see what it's like before paying.

fifteen bucks a month is an excellent price.

Well, I don't understand people like you who believe 15$ isn't a lot, even if it's 1 month. You're telling me that a Multi-million/billion dollar corporation needs my $15 to keep a game running while they're already getting tons of revenue from game sales and other projects?

There are other ways this series/game can be funded without $15 whatever dollars per month, they just don't want to do it that way nor they want to tell you. They could consider something called an "Item Mall" which they can "pull money out of their asses" from, I bet they double they're revenue if they had one, a very beneficial item mall. Very successful MMO's have benefited from this and are alive till today.

I wish I had 15$ which "I can pull out of my ass" per month to pay for a game (wait a minute...*looks at xbox360*) after paying for my college bills/fee's, car loans/funds, food, housing bills and essential other payments. I've seen college students and people cry over the fact they couldn't afford their World Of Warcraft monthly fee's and eat ramen noodles everyday while they pay this fee. (and not everyone can get a job)

like every other Massive Online Multiplayer game...it'll have some sort of a fee. if it does have a fee i most likely wont buy it because you add the fact that my partner is 30 weeks preggas....on top of my other expenses...they only money ill have is for my 10 bucks a month Xbox Live fee....in my opionion they should have some sort of a prepaid system where you pay lets say $30 and you actually get 30 bucks worth by only deducting the money while you play. instead of paying 30 bucks a month for only getting to play 5 times in the whole month....if your lucky!!!

other then that it should be an awesome game....its Final Fantasy after all :)

Servers with graphics like FFXI are expensive to run, in a perfect world, the server would be free, but it isn't, I'm not sure what goes into it cause I don't know the technical mumbo-jumbo, but all I know is whatever it takes keeps the staff at PlayOnline busy.

They're a business at the end of the day, they need to make their profit anyway, but I'm pretty sure enough of the monthly fees go towards staff and improving gameplay experience.

As overall profit of Square Enix, what has to be considered is that FFXI is a different department within Square Enix, and obviously profit would be credited by the departments that earned it. i.e. FFXIII's profits would have no effect on FFXI. So the FFXI's team need a surefire way to make sure they can keep funding PlayOnline to keep FFXI running. Hence online fees.

Well hey ya never know...with their massive sales this year they might be like HEEY free to play online game with lots of adverts and cash items...

but no, it's almost definitely going to be p2p, maybe slightly cheaper than 11 and maybe not with the whole extra payment for characters and tetra master. will probably get into this one myself if i have money to spare...unlike the kids who know exactly how much pocket money they have to spend each month us grown-ups have to budget!

Is There A Price?

will there be a monthly price to play FFXIV like XI was or will it be free to play once you buy the software? I have searched tons of sites and read hundreds of magazine articles and none say anything about paying to play each month. if anyone knows anything about this please let me know.
THANKS!!!!!!

Be prepared to pay monthly for it, I reckon. I don't see any logical reason why they wouldn't do pay per month like with XI... otherwise people would bitch about XI having to pay per month and so much money, blah blah... =/
