What do summons do when they're not being summoned?

Can't think of ANY example right now but I've seen a few events where something's been summoned and the entity says "you have awoken me from my slumber, what is it that you want from me?" or something along those lines...so I'm guessing they sleep?

Given that they're being "summoned", I usually assume that the summons are in their own worlds. It would be kewl that all the summons actually live in the same "other world" or whatever though.

I know in FFVIII, the GFs live within the users mind, so I'm more inclined to think they're just awake and aware with the user at the same (also got fanfic ideas abut that )

In FFVII, is it possible the summons live in the materia they're contained in? Ouch - talk about pokeballs xD

ahaha they totally would be too. They are the perfect couple. So typical. The ice queen and the hot head. Or the cheerleader and football captain type.
They love eachother and everyone knows it.


But I always thought the summons were creatures that lurked in the same world as their summoners.. 'Cause you always see Bahamut just sorta swooping down onto the scene and stuff, and Ifrit bursting out of the ground.
Wherever they come from, even if it is in the same world, it's usually probably far, far away (I'm thinking like Alexander in FFVIII, Bahamut Zero in FFVII)
