Well, I bought this on Friday from a wonderful little shop that often stocks US games that aren't due to hit UK shores in months (or at all, in the case of Demon's Souls...which I have yet to buy, but I digress) and I've spent the weekend exploring it in between bouts of Star Ocean. Honestly, I can't see where the criticism is coming from - but then, I adore real-time combat systems, and this is so reminiscent of Final Fantasy XII that I automatically loved it. Its much more accessible than FFXII, and more interactive as well. The AI suffers a bit, but I haven't delved into the AI settings as of yet...there must be something in there to turn off weaker skills or something. I can't speak for the online elements yet...I've only set it up and browsed around VERY briefly.

...about the only thing I have to complain about is that the voice acting lacks any real passion.

So, I was wondering, has anyone else bought it yet, or is anyone planning on buying it? I'd love to go on co-op missions with anyone interested once I've turned my character into a spellcasting machine~

Coincidentally, I was just watching IGN's review of this game on Youtube! :wacky:

I was really looking forward to this game. I loved Dragon Quest VIII and Rogue Galaxy. I enjoyed their worlds and their characters - and I honestly thought that we found some JRPG gold in Level 5. So when this game was first announced in 2006, I was understandably excited. After seeing it be delayed for so long - my interest just waned for it.

However, I'm willing to buy it when its price falls. I just don't think paying the full price for a game with a lot of shortcomings will be a great idea. With FFXIII around the corner, I'm not exactly that excited to get my hands on it. You're right about the voice acting I have heard so far. Pretty much from a lot of English dubs in JRPG, the voiceovers sound rather half-hearted a lot of the time.

I like the fact that there is an online feature though - as it's something you don't normally find in a JRPG. I like the fact that you can create your own character though. If it can talk and not remain so silent as a DQ protagonist, I would have liked that feature more.

The story and characters look awful though. I've seen a brief synopsis of the story and I've seen some trailers. Nothing has really captivated me at all. The story just sounds awfully cliched and I'm not keen on seeing yet another vulnerable princess be captured. I like Dregias's armour design though. :hmmm:

I have yet to get my hands on the White Knight Chronicles but, I deff am interested in the game and i'll probably get it sooner or later :monster:
From what ive heard about the game it's fairly good and from what i've seen it looks good too :ryan: It deff looks interesting and so does the online :hmmm:

I'm definitely looking into getting this game in the near future as well, and if you still have it then, then I will be more than happy to join you online. Also, in games like this, I generally have a partner or two join, so we may just have a full group! :ryan:

That'd be awesome! I've done a couple of online missions now, and they're pretty fun, if somewhat simple - gather this, kill that, etc etc. I managed to get an S Rank with a couple of people on one of them, at least~<3

On a minor note, your appearance changes with your equipment. Its a small thing, but...yay! I wish more RPGs would implement this feature!

Still trying to figure out my town. You need a hell of a lot to money to expand it, and a lot of materials to make stuff for it. It'd help if I the guide for it, I guess, I don't have a clue where to find this stuff. XD

As for the story...meh, its not as bad as some RPGs I've played, but it is pretty lacklustre at the moment. Typical chasing after the princess, with characters who act important but aren't really properly introduced. Although it could always get better as time goes on.

The battle system is brilliant, and I'd definetely recommend it to anyone who liked FFXII in particular. The moves are much easier to use, and, asides from the fact that enemies can hit you from all the way across the screen, making ranged combat absolutely pointless, there isn't anything wrong with it - in fact, I'd say its one of the better ATBs out there.

Agreed! I've always been hugely disapointed in every single game where it's the same look all through the game. :gonk:

I have a few other things on my list at this exact moment, but WKC is definitely up and coming on it. I hope you see you on there soon! :moose:

Especially when they put so much effort into the weapon design and whatnot...truth be told, I didn't notice until I changed my weapon, because the armour I equipped looked so similar to the one I had on previously. XD

Awesome! It'll be nice to play with someone familiar. Just drop me a line when you get it and are ready to start playing online, I'm liable to be playing it for quite a while, even after I get FFXIII and Resonance of Fate~

I'm actually considering getting a mic and headset for this game, since its voice-chat compatible. Haven't played a game with proper voice chat options, other than Pokemon on the DS. XD

The scenery for this is game is quite pretty, as well. Not quite as detailed as, Star Ocean 4, for one, but a lot softer, and more vibrant. At least, I was fairly impressed by the fields, and the pretty fire attacks.

On a random note, the game is also going to have DLC at some point...hopefully something good. Cosplay costumes would be awesome, although it seems highly unlikely...

Not quite sure about playing as the Knight yet...it seems a tad broken. There doesn't appear to be a time limit...or if there is, its not short enough, because I've been killing everything before said time limit has run out, and he's a freakin' tank. A huge, indomnitable tank @_@

He had better be! Being a mech-type thing while everyone else is midieval bound is pure haxx! :woo: Now, being serious about it, have you tried in on a boss yet? Cause if that's still the issue, than.....I agree. :hmmm:

I have to get myself a new headset, as I can't get audio in mine anymore....but the mic still works. I not generally a huge chatter unless it's with people I know, so we'll just have to see how far that goes. :ryan: If my partner is there, we'll definitely be using mics.

Also, time frame for me getting it...could be anywhere between this weekend, and next paycheck. Which is in two weeks, and that better not be that case, or I'll be pretty irritated. :grumpy:

To be honest, I haven't faced any particularly difficult bosses yet. I went up against
Dregias
on the way to the next town, who appears to be the primary antagonist, and I took him down with ease in knight form. Leonard does around 40 damage at the moment normally, transform him and the damage doubles, or triples if I'm using a skill that consumes MP.

I also came across a
tavern girl who transformed into a Gigas
and had Yulie screaming at me "Only the knight can take it down!"...seconds after I wiped it out with my player character. XD

At the moment, the game hasn't offered much in the way of a challenge...save for when I tried to solo sidequest missions. You can only use your PC, whether you're online or not, and I got absolutely decimated. XD

I know I shouldn't have, but I looked at the spoilers anyways :gonk:

Odd, that. I would think that the single player would be more difficult than online play. Also, is there a rank limit on who you can join in the side quests? :hmmm:

Wait huh? this game has online? How is it played because usually RPGS have no online :gasp: Also I only played like 10 mins of it because I tried it at a friends. Its a great game but meh 10 mins wasnt enough. Im gonna get it Sometime after XIII. But online?

I would link you an ad of it, but trust me, you don't wanna hear the narrorator. If you've ever played Monster Hunter online, it's sort of like that, just team based. If not, picture FFXII with all your team mates being actual players. :hmmm:

Also, you can build and upgrade your own town, set up shops, recruit NPC's to join it, ect. and both you and your friends online can visit your town (even while you're gone) to buy the items your town specializes in.

I think the online aspect is basically some levels where you team up with people to beat monsters and grab treasure - it's something like that. I only heard about that from what I've seen and read. It would have been interesting if you can somehow play through the main story online instead.

With White Knight Chronicles 2 announced in Japan recently, I wonder how long it would take for the sequel to get here - seeing as though it's taken the first one such an awful long time to get here. Now that it is, it just seems a little last-gen.

i heard that the gameplay is just ok but has amazing storyline,i usually dont get games that has good storyline with bad gameplay, opposite of my bro.the characters look cool and intresting.

Yeah, the online for this game is pretty repetetive, I guess - you buy quests from the guild shops (which are next to impossible to do by yourself) and do them online with other players. Up to four players. You get ranked on your performance as well...how fast you do it, how many times you die, enemies killed, etc. Although just by following each other to the objective point on the map I've been able to get S Ranks with others, so its not amazingly hard to get them. XD

Quite a few people have compared it to World of Warcraft, although having only played that game for about five minutes and seen it being played, I'm not entirely sure that is accurate.

You can restrict who you play with as well I believe - by level, guild rank, friends-only, etc etc.

Weird, I've heard the complete opposite. That the gameplay, while simple is very fluid and enjoyable, where as the story was nothing original or compelling. :hmmm:

@Martel, I'll be getting this game monday. :moose:

Sorry for the double post :gonk: I added you, Martel, and I have the game. So just send me something when you're ready!

Will do so tomorrow - today is my horrendously busy University day ><
Still, what are your first impressions of the game? The introduction is a bit all over the place, but once you've got the freedom to explore it improves significantly, in my opinion.

Am currently working on getting up to an acceptable level to do a quest...most of the time I do free quests people are several levels higher than me, and its a tad embarrassing. XD

I agree with what everyone says about the storyline thus far. :hmmm: I feel like it's an old computer RPG. For some reason they pick the little kid to go on the dangerous journey, while everyone stays home drinking hot chocolate, ect. The controls felt clumsy at first, but after a bit of tinkering, I feel like I've got a better handle on it. However, hitting X each time to attack feels unneeded (considering it's extensive likeness to FFXII). Like I said though, I guess I'll forget about that after the learning curve.

I absolutely LOVE the fact everything I equip shows up on my character. As said before, it's not a feature often exploited, but it definitely adds debt to the game and your connection with your characters. I have thousands (literally, not a joke) of little white dots all over my screen as my projection TV is dying, so I have yet to actually be able to 'take in the sights'. However, what I can still see, looks nice, if not a tad old. :ryan:

Truthfully, I wish your character was a bit more present in the storyline (I just got the camera, and thus far, he seems to not even exist half the time), because I don't care THAT much for Leonard. Well, not as much as I care for my own character.

I can't wait to try the online portion, however. That's what I have my eye on! Do you think I should tinker offline a bit more before I jump in? Or is head first my best choice, you think?
