Speaking as someone with firsthand knowledge, I know that almost nobody takes a teenager seriously. Even though teenagers themselves gave most every other teen that reputation of teenagers being 'bad kids', it still isn't fair to assume every teenager is like that.

Same goes with men. Most women -as far as I know- assume the worst in a man. Males gave themselves such a reputation, but again, it's still unfair to assume every guy is that way -whatever 'that way' may be.

There's a lot more than just 'bad teenagers' and 'all men are pigs', but these were examples.

Why do you think people think this way? Do you think others feel the need to keep a certain group of people in a specific category in order to be kept safe? Do you think it's ignorance?

I find that categorizing a group of people this way usually leads to racism, sexism, and even ageism.

Thoughts?

Because it is easier to use past observations and experience to predict whats in store for you in the future. If I get really sick from eating a particular item on the menu of a restaurant, I'm probably not going to order it again. If I barely survive a plane crash, I probably won't want to fly again.

Lol, this is pretty much the way I see it. However, I think it depends on the individual. Some people may think that way, but they also might be forgiving or more lenient if these stereotypes are constantly occurring. Others aren't so much and tend to live their lives by those stereotypes, assuming that's how every male will act, every teenager, every blonde person, every black person, every Asian, every old person driving a car, etc.

As with most people I blame either the media or the parents or the friends.

1) Parents - Whatever you are taught grown up, is what usually you are ingrained to believe. So if your parents say all muslims are terrorists, then of course you know this is wrong (now), but growing up if you were fed to believe this, then you are probably never going to affiliate yourself with them.

2) Friends - You are told often times how to think and follow how to act by your friends. You are doing it just to fit in, but often times because of this you gain certain stereotypes. For instance, all goths are emo. I think emos gave goths a bad name in the first place.

3) Media -
Most women -as far as I know- assume the worst in a man
I blame mostly the media on this. I have been told many times that women are the most deceptive creatures on the face of the earth. It has been said that women have a set of needs that always need to be fulfilled. When those needs are not fulfilled they claim they are not in love. One need could be never being bored with a certain individual. I'm not saying that any of this can be proven, but media has given the impression to men, and so therefore we as men have chosen not to be chivalrous in return. Also never being bored is what you see in movies, soap operas, MTV, whatever else women watch. No matter how you think your relationship will go with the opposite sex, there will come a time where there is boredom. The "all men are pigs".. is completely hilarious. If women really think this then I feel sorry for ya'll.

I'll admit that I usually do categorise certain groups of people, because when enough of the same type of people act in a certain way, it's hard not too.

Usually it has to do with where people live for me.

E.g: All people in Woodridge are baby-making, doll bludging, druggie losers.

They don't help their case, as every time I go to that area you are surrounded by these type of people. =/

I haven't ever heard that bit about women, so I'm not sure if I can say women themselves have given the rest of said women that reputation. You said you blame the media, but people can't just take a wild guess at how a group of people act and automatically have it be accurate. Most individuals in that group have to prove it's right, otherwise one's stereotypical comment would be nothing if not absolute garbage.

And of course all women don't think that. However, many do because of personal experiences, what they've heard, etc. For me, if one man acts like a pig, then he's the pig. I think it's wrong to blame the rest of the male sex for one jerk's behavior. But there is still no doubt that there are a lot of perverted males out there -but I can say the same thing for most every other stereotype.
