Wheres ALL on your list? im going for all... or final attack, thjough thats only really useful to me in the emerald weapon fight

restore, heal or revive for magic... i suppose i could argue revive just becase the w-item glitch can make loads of elixers and megalixers...

W-Item.. for the glitch, without it then id say double cut

You had to exchange your GP for it, so if you didn't spend a lot of time in the Wonder Square getting a lot of GP for it, then you wouldn't get it.

Also ALL has to be on the list! That is very helpful to have!
Also you put down every summon except one... should just say "all the summons"
Also Transform and Mystify were almost useless
Morph and mime also not useful in the end.
Steal was good only for a few items...
 
Command: Definitely Double Cut imo. Especially when you get it up to 4xCut...I never really bothered with the other materia in this category...other than Enemy Skill one time.

Magic: Revive, Heal and Restore for sure. Time is good too (just for Haste though), and I do enjoy using the elemental spells for a bit of variety.

Summon: Are any of the summons really any more useful than the others? I mean, Knights of the Round deals the most damage, but none of them boost stats or anything. Oh wait, Hades deals status ailments so maybe that's the most useful?

Support: Like others have said, All is by far the best here. I tend to use Elemental sometimes (funny how people don't complain about junctioning Elemental materia to mix with another slot, when it's no more complicated than in FF8?), if the boss has a weakness or I just feel like a change.

Independent: There's no completing the game without Chocobo Lure, so that's the most useful. Other than that...Long Range is niiice for characters with less HP, as is HP Plus. In fact all the "Plus" materia is reeeeally handy. Don't think I could pick a best in category lol.

Just my opinions, if I had to choose the best materia in the game I would simply go with Enemy Skill since with the right skills you can pretty much make it through the entire game. I can count how many times Aqualung and Magic Breathe have single handedly won boss fight for me. Not to mention Big Guard+White Wind is the beat way to heal in the game if the caster is decently healthy.

eh il have to check my previous file i spent a ton of time there getting the shit from the chocobo races... quite annoyiong if i didnt as I thoguht Id had everything and i dont relish going back to try to win it!
 
enemy skill is probably the most useful over all. you get a way to heal your hp and status effects.(white wind)
you also have many different elements to attack with (trine, aqualung, beta and magic breath)
you have a way to replenish your MP (magic hammer)
and finally using Big Guard to set up wall and haste.

for support i'd say added affect with contain

summon would be knights of the round or phoenix
 
Enemy Skill is gamebreakingly useful. Matra Magic early on, coupled with the likes of White Wind, Big Guard, then the big damagers like Beta and Trine are so useful.

Really going out on a limb here, but Heal is prehaps what I find to be the most useful. Only because if you stick it on a double AP weapon as early as possible, you can master it very quickly (around Nibelheim if you're playing quite grindy). Then you can sell it, and not worry about spending money for the rest of the game. Honourable mention to Restore, which is one of the most important spells in any game.

Here I go again with the controversial picks, but Chocobo/Mog is the only summon I really use a lot. By the time I get it, I'll have one character with any offensive spell and All materia, I'll have one character with Enemy Skill and Matra Magic, then one character with Chocobo/Mog. The reason behind this is that all characters will have a means of attacking all the enemies at once efficiently. Honourable mentions to Phoenix for its reviving properties and Knights of the Round, for giving me a pee break during battles... and because it's good.

Added Cut is always nice. Having it with Deathblow basically takes out the risk of it doing nothing. But I genuinely like all the materia in this category. Also All is amazing for obvious reasons, and Steal As Well is another good one to pair with Deathblow.

I want to say a three way tie between Cover, Counterattack and HP Plus, because altogether they make one hell of a combination, early on too. The character with these protects everyone, absorbs the damage with their bulky HP, and returns the favour. When these three have all levelled up a few times, the combo becomes lethal!! If I had to pick one, I'd say Counterattack.
