Worried about the Hype?

So as I was reading some posts the other day I stopped and asked myself if all this hype we, as a gaming community, are giving FFXIII will destroy the game? I mean, it seems like people keep talking about the same topics presented in these 5 minute clips of the game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in the same boat. I watch those trailers at least once a week. I just feel like maybe this time it's been taken too far? (the hype i mean)

I feel like matters have been made worse too, what with each installment taking longer and longer to make, gamers wait longer and longer.

And is Square-Enix to blame? for putting out trailers/images for this game nearly half a decade before it being released?

So is giving the game all this hype a bad thing? and if so, how can we stop it? is it even possible to stop it?

Feel free to move this to general discussion if the topic heads that way, but i kinda wanted to see what people thought in relation to FFXIII.

i think FFXIII is going to be a winner, no matter how much its hyped up, people wont be dissapointed. every second of every trailer shows a final fantasy game that is taken to the next level in every single way.
if FFVII were to be remade, now thats a game that would get killed with hype.

and its better to talk about this after the demo is released.
predicting a huge hype wave coming ^^

Hype has no affect on the final product, only the individual playing the game. If you let yourself get caught up in this being the greatest game of all time, chances are you will be disappointed. You just need to have reasonable expectations. I think it will be a damn good game, maybe even great if done right

I understand what you mean. For example, I can't remember anything about VII, cept when it came out it was the first 3D rpg. and VIII was the same, can't really remember much about it before it came out (maybe because it was a long time ago and I was younger though).

But I think it's partly to do with the production that goes into games that the producers want to keep the fans interested, and so make these trailers. Also partly because the gaming industry is so huge now, and people are saying it will be become bigger than the movie industry. So with that amount of interest, people/gamers/fans will want to know more about it as it goes through the different stages of production.

Only time will tell if it lives up to the hype. Which is the same with films, some deliver and some don't. I really hope XIII will be in the former catergory.

ill admit i did hav my doubts about how good ff13 will be and if im goin to be dissappointed, but since crisis core lived up to the hype, i belive 13 will too

QFT. Fucking awesome post buddy.

I think Final Fantasy XIII will be a very good game. From the news I've read and the trailer's we've seen we have absolutely no reason to expect otherwise. Even so, hype is always a bad thing. Marketing morons might love it so they can push a million more games but for the gamers who buy into it, they'll always be disappointed. If you go in expecting a good game, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how great this game will end up being.

On a sidenote, I think it's a big problem with the Final Fantasy series in general. We no longer look forward to "RPGs from Square Enix". The phrase Final Fantasy holds its own special definition of superior quality... so when people go to play these games they always tend to overhype them.

The thing is it's hard not to hype up a new FF, especially when it's a part of the main series.

What you have to remember though is that every main FF has been awesome so there's no reason to think 13 will dissapoint. Just

Well since I have been playing final fantasy (started following around the release of 7) every main story final fantasy can't be called a disappointment by and large except maybe FF XII. There was such a large outcry for the low story and character development that I think it probably is the closest to a disappointment than any main final fantasy has come. So in my opinion I think Square doesn't want to repeat that and really wants to "knock our socks off" with this one.

Admittedly, Final Fantasy XIII isn't all that hyped so it would only be your own hype that disappoints you, not what everyone else says. In terms of hype, FFXIII is no Halo or Killzone or anything like that which have a much wider audience (imo) than FFXIII, plus apart from the odd interview and screenshots/trailers, Square Enix officials tend to be tight-lipped about what they say so it's not like they're promising things that they can't achieve (which has happened to many games), therefore, I don't think it's hyped enough to ruin the game for anyone. :-)

If I am being honest then I am a bit worried that all this hype will disappoint me. I got so hyped up about Final Fantasy XII with all the trailers. The game looked epic to me and I was desperate for the game. I spoke to some stores on when the game would be released and one said they would get it 2 days prior to the game's release at like 1.00 PM. I went up there and waited for nearly an hour and a half to get it. The game certainly did not match my hype. I wasn't only disappointed, I was majorly disappointed. This was the first proper Final Fantasy in awhile as well as being Square Enix's first proper Final Fantasy title. I was actually angry the way the game turned out.So I do have my fears that all this hype will make the game disappointing to me. I am looking at things like the fact that the last Final Fantasy game I really enjoyed wa s Final Fantasy IX as well as not enjoying many products from 'Square Enix' (Dragon Quest VIII was an exception - Although technically Level-5 developed that game). The only problem I have is that I can't help get excited for this game. Every trailer they have released has been really epic - and I mean more so than Final Fantasy XII. The game so far looks like it is going to be my game of the generation and I only hope that it meets most of my expectations. Despite my own hype for the game, I know that there is going to be flaws in the game to disappoint me a bit but I am hoping that these flaws will be minimum. Here's hoping! :D

that's exactly what i'm talking about. but on a community wide scale. I'm worried that so many people, like Eric, will have bought into the hype and that everyone will feel like this game will disappoint.

i don't think that the gaming community is going to give it a chance. and before we know it, everyone will say that it failed. that square failed. when really, it just didn't live up to some ridiculous standard that we've somehow managed to put FF games to.

well.....hype usually can make common players think that the game is awesome.....no matter how horrible it really is.....like any apple product.

Seeing as the demo will be about two hours long and Sqaure Enix has spent alot of time on it. Final Fantasy XIII should be a MASSIVE game. Longer story, decent graphics, more of this, more of that.

Hype will probably have no affact on it. :eek:uttahere:

Those trailers and screenshots only show a tiny percentage of it.

i dunno. the main reason why i'm worried is because of FFXII. so many people were disappointed with it, but i thought it was fantastic. I'm not worried about FFXIII being ruined for me. i'm more worried that the majority of the public won't like it because they're expecting some ridiculously good game.

All i know is, I don't want to be surfing the forums a month or two after the games come out to find a bunch of threads like "FFXIII worse than FFXII?!" and "Worst FF yet?". None of that! i see that kind of stuff for FFXII forums all the time. and it's outrageous because the game was amazing. sure it wasn't the best final fantasy, but it sure as hell wasn't the worst. strangely enough, i don't see these types of threads for any of the other games (not nearly as often anyways) and i honestly think it's due to the long wait time before the game's release. Square delayed the launch date 4 years (longer than ever before). I think that was a hell of a lot of time to go without a core series game, and it made gamers restless. allowed them time to build up and raise their expectations.

just my two cents.

Yea, Final Fantasy XII was considered a disappointment for many fans. It had a lot of extenuating circumstances though -- everything from new musicians leading the project to the executive producer dropping out halfway through. I think that if there weren't so many unusual instances the game would have been more wholesome and better accepted publicly, as I hope Final Fantasy XIII will be.

Actually nah, I am not, I have been for most every FF before 12. When 12 hit though, it was ultimately disappointing in the story line and character depth.

I just hope people will understand that in order to create an amazing unique rpg, you have to break away from tradition and take a risk. So if this game is totally different in some aspects I honestly think it will be refreshing.

I'm so sick of seeing the overly repetitive JRPGS that have come out in the past 3 years. The most praise I've given the recent JRPGS is "It was interesting". Hey.. I guess it's the cinic in me.. but honestly I'm not to worried about the hype this time.

Hype always over blows expectations. And I think I don't help myself by watching trailers over and over. Maybe I should just forget about it for a bit then play XIII when it comes out. I think I did the same with XII because it was put back over here in the UK for so long, that when it did come out, I was like "OMG! only 1 week til this is out!" so I don't think I was AS disappointed as others. It was still a beautiful game to play though.

So to conclude, for my piece of mind, I've got to not analyse XIII too much, and have no expectations. Then, hopefully I'll be surprised when the game comes out! One thing's for certain though, it'll be the most graphically sound final fantasy!

Ther only thing we have to worry about is opening movie if it feels wrong at this point then were fucked and if not then it'll be fine hype is for the masses but individual opinions are where any game is made or broken if there are 100,000 copies of FFXIII on the second hand shelf at your local games store then we will be at thepoint of sqaure being a second rate games producer

No.

Most people are saying it's going to be shit anyway. I don't really see any hype about FFXIII. The closest thing I see to hype over FFXIII is people complaining that Lightning is Cloud with fake tits and a wig :elmo:

Hmm I think there may be a bit of hype surrounding this one but with reason. PS3, new game engine, trailers.

Friends of mine will begin their FF experiences with XIII. Not sure why, although they have chosen to wait for the new one.

Honestly the trailers looks great. I love the theme. I am hyped.
