World Unification

Would it be better if the whole world was just one giant nation under one government, and under one universal system say a thousand years from now?

Would be better if it were separated into different sovereign states that participate in union or as a confederacy (like Europe today where the separate states share responsibilities without being officially united)?

Or would it be better to have a divided world in which we keep our own borders as we did not more than a hundred years ago?

Personally, I think that we would be better off loosely united, as in option #2.
It would provide us with security, and a loose sense of unity, without fear of open aggression, at least not as much as it otherwise would be if we weren't in agreement with other 'nations' or 'states'. Besides, take Europe now, it's taking the form of one political entity, instead of being more nationally individual. They have the euro, currently one of the strongest currencies in the world, they're politically stable (at least more stable than they were about 60 or so years ago).

Having just a huge nation of humans (Earth) would probably be a bad thing because it takes away the cultural differences that we have now, and having divided states, i.e. as in 150 years ago, would possibly mean more conflict.

Could we possibly survive as a race if we are threatened by outside forces by maintaining the systems we have today?

Humans, by nature, are gregarious. Sadly humans, again by nature, are violent and territorial. I don't believe that we can obtain either world peace or world unification. It's just not possible they way we are now.

If all religion was abolished, if all poverty was abolished, if all prejudice was abolished it may be possible....but that's not likely to happen.
 
How about option 4? No nations, no borders but also no governments!

I think thats completely possible and would be the most beneficial for humans AND the planet.

And there would still be different cultures, culture doesn't have to be defined by invisible lines drawn on a map.

I dunno about that but it would be cool getting to travel to different places without using a passport or whatever.

But then again, some nutters would probably re-create them anyway for their own selfish purposes.:mad:
 
Not if everyone else stop them. It would be the same as now, there are plenty of nutters, only difference is that at the moment those nutters are in power and us normal folk dont have much power to stop them!
 
A'yo, I enjoy your thinking about what better for mankind, but alas, your views will always be a simple dream. You see, humanity is what we made it to be. And the very monster we created is an indestructable part of our lives. It me be unfair and sad, but it's true. Do only thing you can truely do in this world is be aware of your surroundings and protect the ones you care about. And when all else fails, you will always have yourself. That's all I need in order to survive. That and video games...:P
 
We need different countries because it gives people choices. If someone wants to live in a predominantly Jewish society where religious laws are strictly enforced, then Israel is a good choice. If someone wants to be in a vast array of languages and cultures, the EU is a good place to go. If someone just wants to be left the hell alone, they can move to Greenland. If we got rid of all of these borders, not only would we lose these choices in laws and cultures, the tyrannical, abusive dictators of a few militaristic countries would be able to spread their influence over the entire world.

The idea of a "world government" is about as crazy as trying to have one "head message board" moderate every other message board on the Internet. Not only would it never work, if it somehow DID happen, it would devastate the entire human race.

How about that's an insane solution that has failed throughout history and would almost certainly fail in the future? I doubt your "option" would last a week.
 
well look at the united kingdom
scotland
england
N.ireland
wales

one nation yet the hate and rivalry between the four countries particularly scotland and england is crazy, of course thats not sayin evry1 hates evry1.
but there are plenty scots evrywhere who just hate the english with a passion i dont know why. so there never goin to be peace as long as there are knobs in the world.
its meaningless to try and get peace to a point where evry1 is happy.

it shows that uniting countries can be pointless as the uk is now on the edge of breaking up

Agreed, putting everyone on one continent is asking for exstinction...:rolleyes:
 
And that's just one relatively small piece of land. Imagine how incredibly violent a society would be where EVERYONE had to follow under one rule. The world would tear itself apart.
 
Well, yeah that's a distant dream, this unification stuff. But, as in all things, there are possibilities. It may not look it now as we're at each other's throats at the moment especially in the Middle East but there is a chance. We just have to give it one. Just give it a chance. Does that remind you of the song??

We just have to do it in a way that will actually last.

And yes, no borders = bad idea.
It's like tearing down the barnyard and hoping the wolves don't get the cows.

But what with all the idealists out there like myself, it's a dream that's worth pursuing.
