Hi Guys.

I am not sure if anyone can help me or offer me advice on this or not but i thought I'd give it a go.

So recently (yesterday) my ADSL completely fucked up, nothing was working and my IP company had no idea what was wrong. They made me do all these changes to my routers settings and nothing worked. Anyway, today after work it suddenly started to work again (Hooray!) Everything connects to it perfectly EXCEPT My laptop :S

My laptop will not connect to my router on any Authentication settings other than when it is set to 'disabled' I am pretty sure 'disabled' is not a safe authentication type and i am sure my laptop worked on WPA2 (or whatever it's called) before my IP company got me to change it.

So what I am asking is, does anyone know how I can get my laptop to work on any other Authentication type other than 'disabled' I want some kind of security there on my router, I also want my laptop to work on my wireless.

Thank you :)

First of all, what type of Router do you have? I'll assume it's the most common one, which is Linksys, or Cisco.

Sounds like your laptop doesn't support WPA security type, which might be the case, depending on what year your laptop is.

If that's not the answer,

Change your Router Security to WPA2 Personal, and see if your laptop will gain access to your router. (Assuming you know how to change the wireless security.)

If that's not it either, then try WEP security, it's not as strong as the other two (WPA and WPA2), but at least it provides some sort of security.

I have a Billion 5200 Router. I've tried it on every Authentication type on the drop down menu. It's a Sony Vaio laptop, I only bough it this year, my sisters laptop she had for 3 years now connects to the other authentication type so it's weird that mine suddenly wont :(

Thanks for replying btw!

have you tried resetting the router, has your pc connected to the router before, and have you recently installed new programming if no to the first one try unplugging your router, leaving it for 1 Min and then turning it back on, if yes to either of the other 2 try a system restore to a time when it use to connect :) finally try connecting to it when everything else if off the network, or when your near the router :)

When something goes wrong with a router, it's also likely you'll end up with IP address conflicts somewhere along the line. Try connecting all of your computers to the router (temporarily disable the security if you have to), and then entering these commands on them, one at a time.

1) Win + R (or Start > Run)

2) type "cmd" without the quotes into the 'run' prompt.

3) in the new command prompt window, type “ipconfig /release”, also without the quotes. When that's done, enter "ipconfig /renew", and after that, “ipconfig /refresh”.

Those three commands will give your computer a new IP address, different from the others on the network. Often the problem is, the router crashes or something, and when it comes back on, it gives one computer the same IP address as another computer that was using the router during the crash. Of course this causes all kinds of trouble; it would be like a mailman delivering to two different houses with the same address. The package can only go one place, so what is the mailman, (or router in this case) supposed to do? So, by fixing the IP addresses, perhaps the router's confusion will get fixed too.

I don't know how many times I've had to go through this process with our router thanks to Comcast screwing up on a routine basis :P

Thanks for your help everyone, I tried a few of your ideas and nothing worked. Then I decided to try something simple, I just changed my routers name and suddenly my laptop could connect 8( weird. Apparently if you use a name you've used before it can confuse your laptop when it tries to connect. That is what my dumb internet providers told me anyway, who knows if it's true but it worked in my case.

I'm fully protected now :ohoho:

thanks again!!!
