Seeing as there are all these threads about death and what happens in the afterlife, I decided to complement these by asking What's the point of living?

Is it just for enjoyment and pleasure, just because we do and have no say because something put us here, or are we part of something greater that our minds are not capable of comprehending. Of course there might be other reasons why we believe we live here on this planet we call earth, but it just all depends on what you believe.

So what is it? Do we live for 'something' or for nothing at all?

I don't know if there is an answer tp your question but since life really isn't that important to some ppl.But to me the point of living is I dunno maybe have fun and many other things.Yet I was going to make this topic later on in the day but guess you already made it.

Point of living:

To grow, breed, die. We only breed in order to keep our race going.

To me, there is no higher life form. And as sooner as we can accept that, maybe there will be a revelation for everyone to see. I mean, instead of praying and whatnot in order to help you, why not just try and work at the problem yourself? And that is the part where growing comes into play. We constantly adapt to new things that change around us.

Life is what it is. It isn't special for anyone or any race.

I really just wanna know what you guys think and believe.
And you're right Midnight, there really isn't an exact answer to this, as in all things.
But then again, the recent threads don't really seem to have answers too, eh?:P

PS: Sorry I took you're thread away.:|

Well said. Theres nothing before and nothing after, so have fun while youre here.

The human race is just and all other life is just luck of the draw. The earth happened to be able to sustain life and we happened to become the only sentient species on this lump of rock. Just because we can comprehend the fact that there might be a meaning to life doesnt mean there is one!

We live because the universe would be really boring without life. I mean, if humans didn't exist, would it really matter if the universe existed or not?

point of living? well we'r alive who knows why but i for one am happy im alive cuz life is good, i dont really care why im here, all i know is that im having fun:)

Moving from Religious Debate to General Debate. I think more people will see it and answer the question if it is put on that board. Plus, not necessarily a religious topic. If someone wants to use a religious answer, go ahead. But as of now religion has not been mentioned.

HUMANS ARE SUPERIOR AND ALL OTHER RACE PHAILS.

Yea, we're just a tad bit egotistical. xD. I am pretty sure that if humans didn't exist that there may, just may be another planet that holds life. And to them, the universe matters if they exists.

Buddy, I have absolutely no idea what the point of life is. I can only tell you what it isn't and what I find important in my life. The only reason I find my life to be worth living is being able to help others. I'm not an extremely charitable person but I do try to be generous and help others by listening and giving advice when I can. I'm not a saint. A lot of times me trying to help others is taken as not helpful though... it comes off as not being satisfied with their personality. But even so, that's my problem if I push too hard. If I couldn't help others, help change and shape their lives for the better, then there is no reason for me to exist at all. When I fuck up, that's exactly how I feel. I just feel useless. There is no reason to me to be on earth if I am not helping others. There's just no point. I'm an engineer but no amount of money I'll make or widgets I produce are ever going to matter at all. It doesn't matter if I invent the next best thing since the telephone... it doesn't mean a thing unless it helps others. Money is the only thing that drives progress but it doesn't matter if you're living in the stone age or a millenia in the future... life is not worth living unless you can help others.

We live because we have chosen to live. If one doesn't want to live, you've only to choose not to live. :D

It's like a Koan.

So we choose to live our lives because we can is what you guys are saying right? And we choose to live it because it's right in that we help other people in the process?
*Aztec, that's a great philosophy.:)*
I agree.

Does it matter anyway? Sheesh a little humility would be nice......

As to why we live....who knows? who cares? I am not a philosopher nor do I wish to be one. I am here because two other humans got together and did the horizontal tango. I didn't ask for it, it just happened. I am here so i have to just get on with it.

A'yo, I believe life is nothing more than our perception of it. You see, the reason we are even able to ask questions like this is because of our preception of the subject. Without perception, nothing would exist. And life revolves around existance and preception. To answer your question, the meaning of life is whatever you perceive it to be. People say that they are things the our mind cannot comprehend and I think that's a stupid they to say. If we are able to precieve a God that possibly doesn't even exist, then we could precieve just about anything. And that was just a basic example. So, percieve you life how you want it to be and follow that path to it's destination, which is ultimatly death of course. But when your dead and gone, it is up to the living to percieve your existance. If not, than we would be nothing more than another soul forgotten in time...

how about taking a leaf out of vivis book 'how do we know we exist, maybe we dont exist'

Humans don't live for any particular purpose other than to simply live. Life is quite possibly the greatest miracle (if you believe in such things) to ever grace this planet, and I don't believe there need be any other reason to live than to merely live life. There was no pre-determined path set out for us before our birth. We were born, and we are to live life in the way that we please.

To live is to live life. Nothing more.

Then you could argue the point that we may not even exist. Then if that be the case, life would only be a simulation of the brain, but if all humans experience the same simulation, then life is no different than if we were to exist.

I dunno if that was supposed to be humorous or not, but wouldn't that put is in the same light as any other animal, as we've been saying all throughout history that we are superior to everything else?
Having no other purpose but that. Having no purpose at all.
Where would that put us in the order of 'life' then?

Well if you'd like a purpose because of the various breakdowns of species, then here you go.

Plants and the like make the world more healthy, cleaning the air.

Humans destroy the world.

If you want a purpose other than no purpose at all, which I still believe is true, then our purpose is potentially to end the cycle. Which is what we will do one day.

Oh, and were you saying my post was humurous? XD

Oh, and were you saying my post was humurous? XD

Oh, woopsie!
I meant L U L U's post. Should've 'quoted' it.

But talk about Armageddon in the hands of humans here.:O
That kind of reminds me of FFVII and the Life Stream for some reason... this breaking the chain stuff.
It's a scary future for us then.
