Why can you feel everything but pain in dreams?

Dreams really are scary aren't they? You never know what will happen and the fact that the feeling of it makes it scarier because it may as well be real. Anyway I usually feel pain in my dreams but if it seems too painful I usually wake up instantly. However it seems as though when it comes to emotional pain, it seems hard as heck to wake up from that.
