Seeing a few other threads with similar kinds of question, I figure I could throw out my own.

I have a free rental at my local Roger Plus store (think Canada's version of Block Buster Videos - except they're all into phones and internet too o_O). I think it's for a week to have the game.

Anyways, I've narrowed down the games I wanna rent, but I'm not sure what the final decision should be.

3D Dot Game Heroes
Bayonetta
Dante's Inferno
Dragon Age: Origins
Heavy Rain
Nier
Resonance of Fate

A few things I'm considering:
  • Games I can beat within a short time frame - but not too short
(at least 20+ hours unless it's so awesome it's short)
  • Games that I might be swayed to purchase
  • Nothing too gory
  • Isn't dependent on online availability
So input would be appreciated. Thank you ^^

HEAVY RAIN! You don't HAVE to have online capabilities (you still achieve trophies and all...you'll just have to sync it when you go online) it's got an engaging story, and it's just amazing to play. If you want to up the difficulty, make sure you set the controller to "I am perfectly familiar with the sixaxis" or something like that.

I've been playing it for about a week (I don't own it or the PS3, mind you) and I think i'm about...8 or so hours into the story. if it ends up short, it's still an amazing game and story, and worth the shortness.

I'm a bit biased on this, but trust me, Heavy Rain is an amazing game. There's nudity and gore and cussing and all, so if you don't like that, then i wouldn't recommend it...but it's not really that bad. xD

I can handle some gore, so if it's nothing overly dramatic like tearing or cutting limbs, torture scenes or ripping guts out, I should be okay xD

Bayonetta is shit.
Dragon Age origins is quite good though. It's all of those few things that you were considering.
Dante's Inferno looks like it's GoW3 lite.

Bayonetta is shit.
Seconded. I suggest avoiding this like the plague that it is...how it got a perfect score in Famitsu is beyond me. The novelty wears off very quickly, and then all you've got is a mindless button-mashing fest.

I'd suggest actually buying NIER and Dragon Age, never mind just renting them. XD

Dragon Age isn't depedent on online availability or DLC. Part of Dragon Age's DLC is an entire expansion pack, anyway - if it weren't for the stupid laws about PS3 expansion packs in this country, it'd come on disc. The other stuff - Warden's Keep, The Stone Prisoner, Return to Ostagar and Darkspawn Chronicles - is all forgettable...you get some nice little bonuses out of it, but you can do just fine without them.
I'd say Dragon Age was definetely over 20 hours...you'd have to really peg it across and skip through all of the cutscenes to finish it in under that. The gore is...laughable, really. The graphics are so bad it looks like someone has splattered red paint all over the characters. Fire looks even worse. XD

NIER is about 25 hours long if you do all the sidequests. Without them its about 10. Less if you skip all the cutscenes. But it has multiple endings, a fantastic story and combat system - its not particularly gory, but its surprisingly dark - and its definetely a game you need to play more than once to fully appreciate.

Resonance of Fate is extremely frustrating, its probably the best one to rent if you're renting considering a purchase. Its mercilessly unforgiving, but it has a fantastic combat system and the story is alright once it warms up...it takes a while to warm up, though.

I have no opinion on Heavy Rain...although I've heard a lot about it being ridiculously short. All I know about 3D Dot Game Heroes is that I'm getting it when it drops in price sufficiently. XD

Dante's Inferno you can finish in about 5 hours; if you want to try it out, I'd suggest renting it and not buying it. Its pretty gory at points, although you'd expect it to be - after all, its set in Hell - and the story is only really good if you're familiar with the Divine Comedy. I suppose it is little more God of War set in Hell, but God of War has no real edge over it.

Overall...of the games you listed, I'd say Dragon Age is the best one...although NIER ranks in close second. Of all those games, Dante's Inferno is best suited for rental in my opinion - you'll finish it quickly, give it back and that will be the end of it. XD

Dragon Age Origins is the best one on the list. Please give it a go and see what you think. I racked up 70 hours on the game itself, not the expansion pack. So its worth a look.

The other 2 Id say give a go are 3D Dot Heroes and Heavy Rain. I havent played them myself, but my guy has them and they look amazing.

So I guess either Dragon Age, Heavy Rain, or Nier? :hmmm:

For Dragon Age, the new version that came out, it's the same game plus extra stuff, right?

Thanks for your thoughts, guys. I think I'll be going on Sunday (last day to use the coupon no less :wacky: ) and I'll see what's available to pick up ^^

Which new version? There's been some more dlc I think.
And the story for Dragon Age takes about 35-40 hours to playthrough, so that might be too long if you're just renting it.

I wouldn't rent Dragon Age, it's more of a game that you should buy, or borrow. It's a very long game.

Personally I would go with Heavy Rain. I just rented it last week actually and I played through the story three times. Its amazing. Sometimes its just so intense that it's crazy though.

I've heard a lot of good things about RoF. If you're looking for an RPG, then go for that. Otherwise I say Heavy Rain. :D

Bayonetta was crap. I tried it, got about three hours in, and screamed so much about how blasted hard it was so I quit.
