Help What is the max amount of materia you can have?

I thought I read somewhere either in the game or in the versus guide for FFVII that you can only have a certain amount of materia and once you reach the max amount, every new materia you get it deletes one on you, or something. I've mastered a lot more materia this time around playing it, and when you master them they divide, so now I've got a ton of materia... and wondering if it's going to delete something good on me.

I believe the max is 99.....Its been a while but I know in your materia section it shows the available space...you can always count the lines to make sure lol

Man, I remembered without even checking. I'm good. I knew it was 256. :3

Also, I didn't know it actually deletes stuff....weird.
 
I could be wrong that it deletes some after the max, I thought I read that somewhere, maybe someone can confirm.
But wow the max is a lot higher than I thought! Sounds good! Thanks for the replies
 
256 is like the freakin magical number of FF games its everywhere man But seriously who gonna buy or duplicate enough materia to fill that amount unless you have favorite materia for your chracters and there backups or you want to make 10 master materia for Magic Command & Summon.
 
Not the magical number, it's just the upper limit of an 8-bit unsigned integer, if we start from 1. *pushes up glasses* :3
 
I think everyone else already answered this but the typical default max (with the exception of items) in FF games is usually 255. Unless of course you count Ultimate weapons and Armor with 8 slots on all of the characters then you could have a maximum of 383 or 399 with Aeris around, but I imagine moving stuff around would be damn annoying. Especially if you wish to equip a weapon or armor with less slots. May result in some lost Materia, but I don't know why you would ever reach that limit anyway.
 
I don't believe it deletes Materia on you -- this has never happened to me. I don't know if I've ever reached the max though. I never paid much attention to how full that box was. o_O
 
I've read in the game Barret said 200 was the max the party can hold. So I guess the other 55 or was it 56 is adding the ones you got equipped. I have reached the limit plenty of times and I think the spawned materia has to be replaced or discarded.
