Which (modern) game should you start with if you never have played FF before?

What is the best game to get into FF? Based on gameplay, storyline, characters, reward (ending/satisfaction).

I started with IX

its not too serious/ has a light atmosphere

gameplay easy to understand leveling up, abilities, all that

the ending was one of the most powerful and emotional that ive ever seen

the characters are great, they are all so different and so unique and all with interesting pasts

I didnt like FFX much because of the sphere grid, and the fact that you couldn't adjust the camera annoyed me to no end.
but I suppose I wouldn't notice that stuff if it was my first one, although id still recommend IX

I would say FFX as well. Just don't get used to it's battle system because most games after FFIV are run on ATB. FFIX is also a good choice since it's gameplay is more newbie friendly and not really as complex as FFVII and FFVIII. FFVI is also a good choice but that one is old school style, 2D, and you said you want one of the more modern FFs to play. Also FFXII and FFXIII have mixed reactions to the fans so I would recommend trying those two later.

FFX is the easiest game to draw from it hasso many different avenues that are made more enjoyable by the inclusion of voices..........are you asking for our opinion or for advice on your decision?

I think the term "modern" does not include FFVI, but thats just my opinion.

Most definitely FFX.

Yeah I have played (6-13). I just thought this would be a good thread for people looking to get into the games.

I think X has the best battle system & character growth. 8 can be very overwhelming if you never played anything like it before. 6 & 7 are pretty easy to being with. 9 is easy except that I didn't find it as good of a game overall. 12 is more of an mmorpg on console and 13 was just weak.

I werent nocking your thread Rydrum just wondering it purpose.

FFX is a very good game to start with, as is FFVII with its very level learning curve.

No worries Galaxy, you weren't the only one. Besides I see how posting this would give that impression.

I would say FFIX. It is a great combination of classic and modern FF and is really sort of a nice over view of the series. And the battle system is simple and easy to pick up. The characters are lovable and the story is straight foreward.

You dont find the Battle speed of FFIX to be a negative way to start of the series Rids?
when you play FFVII or VIII thay can be both fast and slow, but FFIX only has slow slower slowest thing goin' on.

It does bring the earlier games to the fore with traditional FF elements and may even lead new players to to want to experience FFI-VI?

FFIX
You get the best of both worlds: traditional FF aspects to familiarize yourself with the series' core // and sophisticated battle system and graphics

I started with FFI :D

I have found one problem with starting people with FFX. And that is that because the graphics are pretty good and there is voice acting, people might not want to down grade to an earlier game. This happened with a friend of mine. She won't play any of the games before FFX because she can't stand to look at the graphics and the characters do not talk.

FF6 or FF9.

I have just started FF9 and let me tell you, it is a beautiful, fun, engaging game that I have just recently named my second favorite. Final Fantasy 6 is also a beautiful game (the graphics aren't the best and that's not what I meant) and its fun, additive and has great story, dialogue and characters. Same can be said for 9.

So FF6 or FF9. :p

Starting with 10, in my opinion, will ultimately mess up a lot of things. You need to first start with the oldest you can get.

True but the same can be said about FFIX as well. If they're so spoiled by it's 3D graphics they may not want to even bother trying 1-6. It all depends on how open-minded the person is when it comes to games.

That's what I was gonna say, but I couldn't phrase it right lol

I know a lot of fans who started on 10 and refuse to play the older ones because of the graphics. Its...a bit weird >.>

Yeah. Terra you are right- I think its weird that people can't handle 2d & no voice acting.

I voted X, but I think VI, VII or IX would do as well.

Starting on any of them could set you up for false expectations for the rest of the series, however. They're all so different.

FF8!

Don't listen to the haters. The best FF there is. It's characters actually act their ages. And look real. The Junction system is a bit of a bother but no more then the ability system from 9 or the materia system from 7. Don't even get me started on the Sphere Grid.

I think FFIV is the best to start with. But its not on the list so I will go with VII. Its pretty known and is a good place to start. Its not close to being my favorite though, that would be FF Tactics The War of the Lions and second to that is XII. I didnt say XII though because its hard to fully appreciate it if you arent an Ivalice Alliance fan.
