What FF do you recommend for me?

When you do get to VII though, I would highly recommend ignoring any comments about the game, in terms of how good or bad the game is. You would enjoy the game much more if you simply form your own opinion on it.

Personally, I'd also ignore when people tell you to not try XIII. I say give it a shot, you might like it.

I agree that you would enjoy both VII and XIII more if you ignore what others say about them. Personally VII is not my favorite FF but it's still an awesome game with a great storyline. I would suggest starting with FF8 first and not underestimate how much the junction system can help out.

Gonna go with what most of these guys are saying and recommend FFX. It was the first Final Fantasy that I completed and what got me into buying and playing the rest (more or less). It's linear to a point, but Blitzball is really fun when you get into it and going after all the extra crap takes it's time.

FFIX is my second recommendation. Great story, great characters, and I love the ability system they've worked into it.

I haven't beaten VIII but the junction system is really awesome when you take advantage of it really early on in the game :P

XII is a great game, and seeing as you've played others, I'd say you should definitely play it as well (I don't recommend it to people who've never played FF before for obvious reasons).

XIII... I've not beaten it, and I don't hate it--okay I hate the battle system ugh. It's extremely linear so no side questing till you're pretty much near the end (or so I've heard) and it's just not a Final Fantasy game aside from the title. But hey, if you can get past all that, I'm sure it's really not a bad game. The story had me interested.

Lastly VI is an amazing game and has one of my favorite FF characters in it.

VII is good and all, but I've played better.

I would suggest you with the first game that started on that console:
NES: Final Fantasy I (you could start with their psp/iphone versions)
SNES: Final Fantasy IV (you could also try it's DS remake)
PS: Final Fantasy VII (you could w8 for it's ps3 remake coming out on late 2012... I was told)
PS2: Final Fantasy X
PS3: Final Fantasy XIII

I'de recommend IX first. That's the game I started with. Excellent story and characters. The battle and ability system is good. The style is more reminiscent of I through VI when compared to VII or VIII. It pays homage to those classic fantasy stories.

Also, some of the main developers themselves say IX was there favorite, and that it was the closest to what they visioned Final Fantasy to look like.

Either VIII or X. Those are the two FFs I have stuck with for the longest! Their stories are some of the best, and I prefer the mechanics of their battle systems.

In VIII, the enemies level up with your characters, which means any area is good for developing your party. This allows for variety.

In X, the Sphere Grid and turn-based system allow for a personal strategy. It takes time to develop characters, but you feel in control and satisfied by what you achieve. :)

I think (as other have said) starting out with a FF game that is really userfriendly and doesn't require that much inside knowledge to have a good game, like FFX. Good story, arts still ok even for now and pretty easy battle system. Once you get a feel for it, go for IX, VII or VIII and finish on XIII (it sets you up for whats to come plus having a somewhat more intense battle system to get used to)
