What does final fantasy actually mean? I believe its something to do with the fact that square had no other choice and it was their final fantasy.

They were going bust so decided to produce one more game to scramble together whatever pennies they could before they closed forever - they called it Final Fantasy because it was the end of their business and they dreamed of it being successful to save them. It was successful, so they made another one. And another one. And another one...

The game's creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi was using the last of Square's money to make one last game, which he thought was going to be his last in the gaming industry. So for him, the original NES game was literally going to be his Final Fantasy.

Just side bit here, do you the "Destiny Odyssey" mode on dissidia was another possible name for the series? l know its been explained above, but when you think about are both grandiose in there scope as far as words go, or it might just have been the name of the mode on dissidia lol

Well, I've heard all these jokes from FF haters about how FFXIII was going to suck so badly that it may as well be the final "Final Fantasy". -_-

At least Sakaguchi back then had a good excuse to call their 1987 game "Final Fantasy" because it did make sense to. Now at Mistwalker HQ (for those who haven't been following), he's called his new project a very familiar sounding The Last Story.

There's no real reason to, it's not going to be his last game - he probably only wants to tear a leaf out of FF's book or something.
