What do you think Final Fantasy means.

Final Fantasy I was supposed to be square's last game because they were going bankrupt. So that's why it got called that. It ended up being a best seller and put them back in bussiness. Story goes something like that...

Yeah, I think square was making a series called the Mana Series, and they made a lot of them, and thye were losing money or something so they made one last game and called it Final Fantasy...and the rest is history haha

Here it is at Wikipedia:

Square Co., Ltd. first entered the Japanese video game industry in the mid 1980s, developing a variety of simple RPGs for Nintendo's Famicom Disk System (FDS), a disk-based peripheral for the Family Computer (also known as the "Famicom," and known internationally as the Nintendo Entertainment System). By 1987, declining interest in the FDS had placed Square on the verge of bankruptcy. At approximately the same time, Square designer Hironobu Sakaguchi began work on an ambitious new fantasy role playing game for the cartridge-based Famicom, inspired in part by Enix's popular Dragon Quest (known as Dragon Warrior in the United States until 2005). According to unconfirmed sources, Sakaguchi had plans to retire after the completion of the project, so it was called Final Fantasy. Andrew Vestal, who used to run the UnOfficial SquareSoft HomePage (UOSSHP), also attributed the name to the company's hopes that the project would help with their financial woes. Final Fantasy reversed Square's lagging fortunes, and became their flagship franchise.

Yup, that's how Square came up with it, but now think about why they keep the name. None of these games are the "Final" one's. The franchise is a booming one and will be for years to come.

However, when we take a look at each game, we see that there's always some part of a game where someone is holding onto that "Final" hope, just like Square did way back when.

Aeris was the Final hope for the world; defeating Sin was the Final hope for a 10 year Calm; Crushing EUltimecia was the Final hope for the endless line of sorceresses and Time Compression corruption; and putting an end to the greed and power-hunger of the nobitly and dieties of the Ivalice world and beyond was the Final hope for Peace in the FFXII lands.

Sure the games may have all teh same title, and the Final Fantasy may be initially created for Square's almost bankrupt days, but it takes on a whole new meaning when Squenix now unleashes it's amazing games.

Something like that, mbahkerak. o_O And Rydia pretty much explained it.

Anyway, the title suits the game entirely. The FF games do indeed deal with "fantasy" and the sort. Knights, dragons, princess, prince, castles, etc. You name it. So then people wonder "Well if it's Final, why do they keep making FF games? Why can't they just make it final and end it?"

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't take things too literally. It's just a name and Final Fantasy or not, I still love the games they make. I hope they don't end it, but I know there comes a time when all things must end eventually. I just hope they'll still make their fans happy by pleasing us the best that they can.

Technically until recently most games were "Final". Once one game finished, that was it and it was onto another story thus the story was Final. Although this is now kinda fucked since FFX-2.

So it mean that Squnix just want to continuou the old success FF game like FF VII and make the other sequel of the game!! Seems like the idea of "Final" in FF has moved!!

And here I thought the reason was because each game was a self-contained story that did not have a sequel.

At least until they started making sequels...
