I was trying to answer a question in another thread just now, and I got kind of stumped after realizing that Red XIII doesn't really have a class...does he? You know...warrior, monk, thief...what is Red's fighting class?

Red XIII seems like a Berserker to me. His limit breaks tends to deal mostly with damage physical attacks and haste. The spell haste is a huge factor when it comes to the Berserker class. His limit breaks do have non-element type spells such as Cosmo Memory. Also the Berserker class are known for their fast rush attacks. Haste and strong physical attacks. (Which is one of Red XIII's...Hollowing moon I think that's what it's called...)

Well according to various sites which includes his profile, he is classified as a "Beast", but I'll also agree with Cerridwen that he seems like a Berserker as well due to his special attacks. It is also known that the beast types specializes in berserk attacks. I know I've played other games that suggests the idea.

I would also say beserker, since doesn't one of Red's limits put him under haste + berserk status?

He has got to be a beserker, it suits his style perfectly and considering the limit where you are beserked then i would definitly say beserker

Professor Socrates, if you're going to post, please don't post one liners. That is considered spam. Next time I see, new member or not, I will infract you.

Do people really have classes in Final Fantasy VII. Since you can give anyone any abilities in magic, attack etc depending on thier materia and equipment.

I suppose it is down to their basic class through limits, fighting style etc. I agree with Red XIII being a berserker, he has the colour of berserk (red) has the berserk style skills (limits) only one thing puzzles me though... Why does he use a comb as a weapon?

Yes but his weapons are not exactly Berserker class, the berserker usually favours heavy weapons such as axes, greatswords and warhammers. a weapon that is worn on the head isn't exactly a heavy duty power weapon.

Yes but on their own raw ability and skills which I also mentioned, that determines classes.

i would class him as a berserker like pritty much everyone else as he has limit breaks which cause him to have the berserk status and haste status which are they two signature spells of the berserker class in most FF games

By making Red XIII a Berserker, and making trouble in categorizing him, I think FFVII was acknowledging the stereotypes of the class system and subsequently breaking these stereotypes. For example, Cloud fits the hero archetype perfectly when he's in his Zack persona, but his true nature indicates another side to the story.

In the case of Red XIII, the first impression of him is as a threat to Aeris - simply a mindless animal. But then we see a rather different nature to him when he demonstrates his intelligence to the group. The reversal of expectations goes deeper, insofar as game mechanics - while Red is intelligent, he still can fill the role of Berserker.

I would say he was a beast. He is a strange character to say the least, a bit like Wakka in X.

No one in VII really had a class, they just had their own weapons. Other than what weapon they could use, they were pretty much the same character as far as abilities go. It just depended on what materia you equipped them with.

But if you have to give Red a class I would say beast. He's not a beserker because you can't control beserkers. That's more vincent with his limit break.

I agree, everything is pretty much up to the player, right? So that would mean that classes aren't really applicable. On the contrary, Tifa uses fists, so she is monk, Cid uses spears and his Limit breaks involve jumping, so he is a dragoon, but then I'd have to say the Red XIII is beserker.
