Western or Japanese RPGs

I like both Western & Japanese RPGs, but I deviate more towards WRPGs (eg. Skyrim, Jade Empire, KOTOR) for one reason: freedom of choice; the freedom to do good and evil. When asked to side with an evil overlord, I like my character being able to state that the overlord is too weak to be offering a position and that the character will take his position instead.

I chose not to vote because I fall into the "I like both!" category. I started with JRPGs (obviously), as FFVIII was my first. They'll always have a special place in my heart and I thoroughly enjoy a good JRPG. However, I also enjoy Western RPGs immensely, especially open world ones. The Elder Scrolls series is one of my favorites, and I fell in love with the Mass Effect trilogy.

I voted for the Japanese RPG over the Western RPG because I find them to be more enjoyable to play. It also has more varieties of great RPG series such as Final Fantasy, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, etc. The Western only has a few great RPG games, one of them is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrum which is one of the best game in the Western Continent, Mass Effect series, etc. Also most of the Japanese RPG games has a unique battle system known as Turn-Based battle system which allows both player and AI to take turns. As to most of the Western RPG has the Action-Based battle system which it doesn't require both the player and the AI to take turns to attack.

That is the difference between the two of them.

Overall, I like older jRPGs, especially the PS1 era. However, lately, with FFXIII the massive disappointment that it was and Mistwalker just sitting on the critical success of Lost Odyssey, I've had more fun with wRPGs lately. Unfortunately, even that is changing as what made wRPGs unique and fun in the first place (stat and ability buffing) is being dumbed down as games in general are being targeted to a broader audience (gee, thanks, Wii). I mean, I'm so starved for a good classical jRPG that I haven't played and that isn't Fire Emblem that I spent hours obsessing over Lucienne's Quest for the Panasonic 3DO once I found out about it through Pete Dorr.
