Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has provided some clarification on his statement from yesterday that seemed to suggest Final Fantasy Versus XIII was a possibility for Xbox 360. The clarification came, expectedly, through Wada's frequently updated Twitter.

Tweeted Wada early Wednesday (around 6:00AM): "It looks like the 'net is heating up. Versus on Xbox? What I said at the earnings press conference was just that until the launch time frame is formally announced, all points about all titles are not finalized."

So it looks like we probably shouldn't jump the gun on Final Fantasy Versus XIII being multiplatform, until Don Mattrick gets a magic tap on the shoulder at E3 from Tetsuya Nomura.

Speaking of Nomura, it would nice to have the Versus director weigh in on this, don't you think? Unfortunately, Nomura appears to be the only Japanese game developer who doesn't have a Twitter account. He occasionally channels his thoughts through the Square Enix Members Twitter, but this doesn't sound like a topic that would be covered there.
Wada also used his Twitter account to clarify a few other points from the press conference.

A follower said he was shocked when he saw that Last Remnant was not on a slide that seemed to show the IPs that Square Enix hopes to strengthen. Wada responded that the slide, was not the list of IPs Square Enix hopes to strengthen, but was just meant to show that Square Enix has a bunch of properties. There's no meaning in the listed names.

is it going to be on Xbox360 only??? what about ps3??? D8

Where did you get that idea from? Versus was always going to be on the PS3 ever since it was announced back in 2006.

It's just now that there is consideration for the game to be on the 360 as well, just like FFXIII.

Anyway, I can probably guess what Nomura thinks about this. But it will irritate me if we get a repeat of E3 2008 and have another PS3 FF exclusive announced in the Microsoft conference.

No...I didn't quite mean that.

Firstly, we know that it will be out on the PS3. That's been confirmed since 2006.

Now they're starting to consider making an Xbox 360 port of the game as well - just like how FFXIII came out for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

If they do make a 360 version, chances are they will both be released at the same time. It would make no real sense in releasing a possible 360 version first.

Well, Versus was technically announced way back in 2006 alongside the other XIII games.

So I expect Versus to be formally unveiled (hopefully) with nice new trailers and even battle footage at E3 this year.

But Nomura did say months ago that there may be a few problems so it may not even appear at E3. :hmmm:

This makes me a little happy :) please let it be a ps3 only, its way better that way, xbox cant handle the goodness from versus. I also hope they will show more info at the e3, I cant wait. Judging by all the statements its unlikely we get to see anything..however maybe they will do it as a surprise lol

Im looking forward to see something about the Versus world like the older ff titles. Controlling your own airship etc. wow.

I don't see how Wada has that much control tbh, yeah he may own the company but if Nomura doesn't want to make it for the 360, he doesn't make if for the 360. Without Nomura there is no Versus XIII. :wacky:

Wada IS the president and CEO of the company. If he doesn't have the final word, then who does?

I doubt people like Nomura and Kintase have any kind of real say in what goes on which platform. The last time a developer had that kind of power at Square, they ended up going bankrupt and had to merge with Enix ;)

Yea, XBOX final fantasy games totally equal a win.

Just look at FFXIII... :mokken:

I didn't say Wada isn't the president. I said if Nomura doesn't want to make it he isn't forced to, Wada doesn't just turn around one day and go "Hey guys, today we're going to send Versus multiplatform" without consulting the directors. Everything is brought to a meeting and things are laid out, it's how companies work, so Nomura has far more of a say than what you think.

But, by all means, if Xbox fans want a poor port version of Versus XIII I'll happy watch them weep whilst I play on a superior version, it doesn't affect me regardless.

And Square nearly went bust due to the financial failure of The Spirits Within, the merge with Enix was already in the works before that. :monster:

I agree. A company doesnt work that well if the CEO is just like, you are doing this and you have no say. That's a sure fire way to get people to leave your company for another. Especially in Japan.

The financial failure of The Spirits Within which Sakaguchi insisted upon making. You are right about the merger being planned before that (my bad ) but it still stands that the company almost died due to the vision of one of its directors/producers (Sakaguchi was vice-president at that point I think)

I wouldn't be surprised if directors are consulted about games going multi-platform (and sales and marketing departments, etc, etc.) but there's a difference between having a say and making the decision. Of course no one is forced to do anything, and he can always walk away if he doesn't want to.

Fact is though that Nomura doesn't own the Final Fantasy IP and if he doesn't want to play ball, the company can find someone who will, take him off the project, or simply let another team or developer handle the port.

Again who do you really think has the final say? ;)
